>>3675881
Alright skills but try to represent something in your art, like this it's horribly boring and kitsch. Very nice anatomy for a learner but you should practice gestures instead of going into deep water right away. But like this you will become a person who draws tigers with prismacolors so you should think about the story for your art.

well they have to be nice, people go running out of art classes crying all the time lol.

so yeah i think you need to loosen up and not worry quite so much about getting the exact line that you want. early on, and especially for qucker drawings you really want to capture what's important and the big shapes and lines and not worry so much about the details and it looking like a human.

so for example this (which isn't by me) would actually be a more successful life drawing example

and here's an example where the artist is good enough but where he's still stiff. now you might like this look, and that's totally fine, but i invite you to see how stiff his result is despite him making a token effort with that line of action.

and this is the guy trying to teach of course lol
(i joke but if he were going to go on for a long time and do a very finished piece this kind of approach does create a good basis where the expressive part comes in later during 'rendering')

This is like a page from one of those old "how to draw" books. The problem is that this not a documentation of the actual process, but rather a conceptual approximation where the spontaneous sketch lines are formalized for clarity. These things hurt more than they help imo.

Depends on what you wanna do. Who are you favorite artists? There is no shame in drawing from references. You just have to know how to use them, ie implement them into your own stuff.

Many artists already make nice pictures by simply drawing a cute female head from imagination, and then add birds to it or whatever. It depends on what you want to do. You also could go Dali style and paint weird flesh lumps or whatever. It's up to you.

I really like how your shadows are following the forms. I'm willing to bet that you're also a huge Dave Rapoza-fan(?). Don't worry. I am too.

I think what you should do is, you should start by splitting your shit into areas of shadow and light with a simple, slim line. Maybe do a quick wash of 50% gray over that area. After that you draw where you want to do the core shadows and after that you do exactly what you did on these pieces except now you have a map of where things need to go!

Love your shit anyways and I really hope to see more from you! Keep it up anon.

I posted this on /alt/ previous thread but it was at the end of it's life at the mo and only got so far that the pose made no sense, I did try to explain the reasoning behind it nonetheless. I thought of posting this here also hoping someone else might want to comment about it or raise their issues. Thanks in advance.

>>3675756 Looks great, someone else pointed it but maybe work on fur next or more cats. Definitively better than my cats at the mo. I'm just starting with animals in general.

>>3675859
Feels a tad disproportionate with the eye alignment and features, without the reference I can't tell though.

>>3676077
I like it! Robot could use better shapes overall but has good atmosphere I feel.

>>3676935
Looks pretty solid. Maybe push the values if anything or contrast but with that blue maybe that's all you can push it.

>>3677342
Maybe organizing your detail hierarchy? If you want to overdetail everything then you may have to make that sacrifice but it could be worthy. I tend to do the opposite lol, wonky terrible texturing. It's on my to improve on list.

>>3677458
I think it's pretty good and is going somewhere, you shouldn't give it up! A lot of work ahead though.

>>3677611

>>3677776>>3678408
It's probably one of those up and downs along the learning curve stairs. sometimes it may be that the action or gesture is not that interesting.
Try making the hood have some design of itself maybe? Like ears or something that sticks out, might break the silhouette a bit. Right now everything is round and sort of boring.

its based off a character who doesn't have much design unfortunately
I've been having a hard time drawing him in general because he's so...round? He's just like circles put together it's hard for me to give him shape

Is there another position that might make it better?

>> No.3678552

>>3678547
I would say pick like one of the tongue out with grin or the sad slightly open mouth and even when you are pulling the hood down maybe keep the tip a bit straight up still to break the head shape.
Another avenue might be working on the background design to increase appeal but I'm not sure what would you like to communicate with it but probably something that reinforces or showcases the feeling the character is experiencing.

Yeah there's an overlap there, I hoped at least seeing it at the intended size, between the green and the metal knee piece would break out of it. The tangent was designed like that to create a flow between the elements, maybe it would read better if I pushed the values to darken the wolfs leg.
That's a pretty cool idea! I actually had a similar thought today while outside but for a yin and yang inspired drawing and not sure if you would know but Kekkaishi? It's like eastern monk traditions, so summoning spirits like so.
But yeah, I really like that idea, so you would create sort of like a flow as if the wolf is energy flowing from her legs and taking corporeal form if I understand right? That sound rad. I like it.
If I stick to the idea I had I mentioned before I'll try something along those lines. So many thanks!

I keep getting distracted by the hallway with no carpet, not sure why you need 2 hallways entrances so close to one another, but mostly is due to one having the carpet contrasting with the other.
To the left side of the picture, the wall relief detail isn't catching the light coming from the window nearby, which make it looks kind of flat and pasted, sort of how when you see normalmaps in 3D when not facing the surface.
The stairs steps have arbitrary heights, most noticeable between the very first step and the second on the main central stairs. It jumps a because of being the closest ones, probably less noticeable if that happens on the faraway top ones.

Both for your resource sharing, for your inspiration and straight up for all the feedback I've gotten when I post something on these threads. Pic related isn't the exception, some of the feedback here made me make the right changes and for the first time I just won a contest at a comic con with it, now I've been invited to be at a booth at that con next year, so I just wanted to express a bit of my gratitude for the many times over the years I've gotten a good critique, a good link, a good reference, etcetera. Not exactly. I do this alongside me studying fundies stuff to keep up with my imagination work, blindly. So I start by doing something silly like left, and ask others to critique, then I take notes on what they tell me or what I catch by myself.
So for instance people told me to rotate the foot, check the forearm holding the sword and so. Also someone told me the pose was unbalanced and I agreed so I made a revision in my head of the changes, went to the mirror to look at myself posing or more like pretending to do the action. Tried to bridge everything withing the theme and ideas about what I want to tell with the design and composition, to story on the underside.
Then I start from scratch the revision, draw everything again, and go from it. I did look at wolf's fur patterns and colors because I had never had paid attention to those, but yeah, the rest is my trying to put my studying into work lol.
I also feel the more iterations of something that I do, the better overall.

>>3680213
Ha! I'm glad for you. I actually suggested some advice on this one, the cape changes of flow and wrapping for composition with a wonky paint over I did lol. You did a great job with it.
So, I understand what you say, people do help out I can relate.

You mean because now the proportions are different? It's because I felt I wanted someone sturdier, do you see I took a note about short legs? I kept thinking I always kind of do similar proportions, so if she is using a massive sword why not try to do a sort of more sturdy looking character? and I thought about dwarfs and it made me think it was funny to have a sort of half-elf half dwarf or a fit build. So that's why I lowered the pelvis. I wanted to experiment. Not sure if that's what you mean, me lowering the pelvis. I wanted to change proportions.
I'm much happier with the looks on the new one so it's fine by me, I understand it might not be as sexy but that wasn't my intention anyways.

It's clear you're improving, but you're still missing some of the basics of drawing, and that's what is making your illustrations look flat, not the colors.

First about the painting, you need to start thinking about values, meaning lighter and darker colors. Right now you're making the shadows more red, not really darker.

You need to start thinking about the planes of the face, the light source, where the light hits directly, where it kinda does and where it doesn't, and render these areas accordingly.
Right now you're airbrushing everything evenly, clear on the center, and darker as it approaches the edges. I can't begin to explain how wrong it is to have her features all made of soft edges like a pillow, and then completely hard edges on the outlines and the eye.

These will explain these concepts better than I ever could:
https://youtu.be/TfAZt3O0sLY
https://youtu.be/-dqGkHWC5IU
https://youtu.be/LrHfrncvODQ

Also, about proportions, look up "Andrew Loomis anatomy proportion" to find pages from his "figure drawing for all it's worth". Pay attention to the measurements and landmarks.
https://youtu.be/AzDGO0LssEM

Ditch the airbrush, get a harder brush, get black and white references and practice painting them. And also be aware that someday in the future you will cringe at these mangastudio tumblr days

Update from last thread. I feel like it's improved, but sometimes it takes me a very long time to see skew or proportion issues. I have to do several stages of trying to see whats fucked up and fixing it. As far as color variation i like to wait till after i've got the values set and then add it on another layer. It’s lifeless because of the consistent skin tone, airbrushed look, and dead eye syndrome. The poster said he would address at least the skin tone in another layer (personally I work with color zones etc right off the bat but whatever process he’s using could be fine if he pulls it off correctly). What people probably mean is that you rather should draw in a more academic style, ie pay more attention to anatomy, perspective, etc.

Picasso also first had to learn the rules before he could break them. I think it's very hard to get taken seriously if an unknown artist draws very abstract. Klimt also started to paint more abstract and cared less about rules, after he already established his name as an excellent artist in a more academic sense.

It means you can't just mindlessly wave your pencil and expect to come up with appealing shapes, you have to think about what you're doing. Do you find the stuff you draw appealing, Brian?
It's so clear you started drawing by the head, you put effort into it, and then you said "fuck it" and just got lazier and lazier as the drawing went.
This abstract doodling you do is not a style, it's a crutch for when a drawing gets too hard for you. You just need to remember how your 2014 figure drawings were mostly ruined like this, and as you got better you did it less and less, now it's mostly just what you do for backgrounds.

Pic related I think is close to what you're trying to accomplish in this one, gesture pushed so far anatomy is pretty much broken, chair and cello almost abstract, but it doesn't matter because the gesture itself, the shapes, the hatching are on point, the goal of the artist is to capture an abstract frantic flow and he does it perfectly, not by scribbling everywhere, but placing really precise lines.

I've done drawings and continue to do drawings in more academic styles, but since I started posting her years ago even my most academic realist work is neither academic nor realist enough for /ic/. I get the same critique regardless of the level of realism I have in mind for a drawing. I'm sure when I posted pic related three years ago it was savaged for being too loose and stylistic, with no recollection of the drawings I do that are meant to be stylistic and loose. /ic/ has the memory of a snail in that regards. They only recognize forward progress towards realism, and not progress in any other direction. Mastery in this forum is seen as a linear progression towards complete realism, and not a radial progression towards divergent styles. That said the people who talk like this are the most retarded like chun and illastrat, but I genuinely want mastery of all styles, including realism, but also including more alternative styles.

Oof, how can I appease such a god like yourself?
I am but a humble peasant boy looking for advice!
Here is but a small offering of art, I hope it is but a mere drop worthy for a direction to go from the great being!

Oh boy, I guess people should say they aren't the OP of an image when helping out or counter arguing. I'm actually the OP of the image. But I wrote this about the sword and her gesture >>3678216 Basically you make like when you place 2 cards against one another? Make a like a tent (triangle), they balance each other. But it tries to be like in comic books, when characters lift objects that are massive, not truly 100% reality.
And thanks for the tangent comment, I guess I would still try and use better values next time to separate them more but I can see people not catching it at first glance depending on the viewers familiarity with the gesture.

I think you can push your darkest values more in some areas, even go chiaroscuro road. The bottom hand and the stick diagonals create some direction force towards the bottom but there's nothing really there to look at. Although they are faded out in value so it's not too attracting, so maybe it's fine. I might change that hand, that feels like it's holding it's crotch or covering it, to hold the stick like the opposing side is doing. Or change it to point upwards somehow? Maybe like showing the palm or putting the fingers pointing up instead of down.

The face, doesn't have much appeal at the moment, no sure if you are working on it but it's rather bland.

not at all good at painting so im just throwing myself into it and going hard

It's pretty rough, I'm won't be able to give you good insight on values or colors, I would say a straight front shot might be boring, her current expression mostly due to how you are shaping her mouth feels like a bit of a snarl and looks as she was expressing disgust, not sure if that's what you are going for but that's how I read it. I think the eyes are a tad misaligned and close together. The overall proportions and alignments could use some work.
Are you trying to copy someone or have a reference?

>>3683210
no reference and the construction is sloppy because i didnt start with an underpainting or sketch, im mostly interested in advice about colors and edges
