>had important work I was supposed to finish today
>figured I’d draw for 30 minutes to unwind a little
>ended up drawing again for 6 hours
>didn’t finish my work
Pls help. How do I stop drawing? I’m addicted to it and it’s ruining my life.

drawing is your REWARD for doing your job, not something you do before you finish. work, then play. unless you have a patreon, there is no reason to think of art as anything other than something you earn while in your current position.

Yeah I think you’re right. When I had more free time I worked really hard to make drawing daily a habit and tried to treat it like work. I was either drawing or thinking about drawing for pretty much the whole day. Got into the whole draw 7+ hours a day and git gud mindset but now I can’t do that anymore since I have other obligations. Its kind of hard to revert back to treating it as a reward when it’s become so ingrained into my daily life but that’s probably what I’ll have to do.

The OG LAS was just starting up when I started to take art seriously so it really helped me develop a habit of drawing daily no matter what. I’d say that’s the most important step. After that just keep gradually drawing for longer periods of time. It helps to have some idea of what you want to draw or learn. I’d usually be running through around 2 art books at a time so if I got bored of studying Loomis for example I’d try some perspective stuff. Or if I got bored of that I’d do some quick studies if artists I liked. Changing up what you’re drawing and learning helps you keep going for longer imo. I personally find sketching to be super fun and relaxing so if I ever felt tired of all the other shit I would just sketch all day. It helps you cement and apply all the other shit you’ve been learning and filter it through your art. I mostly just sketch these days with a few studies here and there since I don’t have the time/energy to do in depth stuff. But yeah, I’d say if you wanna draw for that long just gradually build up to it and have some sort of loose plan already prepared so you don’t waste time thinking about what to draw. Having a general idea of what you’re gonna draw also gets you in a drawing mindset so even when you aren’t drawing you might just end up thinking about how to tackle the days drawing and it’ll help you out when it comes time to put pen to paper. Hope that was helpful.

Not OP but a website like http://www.stickk.com might help - basically you bet a substantial amount of money on a goal (like workouts or drawing) and try to achieve it in the agreed upon timeframe - if you fail your cash is gone.
I think they additionally offer a 'coach' sort of deal, just some guy who regularly checks in on your progress.

sounds like you're demonstrating avoidant personality disorder type of memes. It's less about what you're "addicted" to and more about having an escape behavior to get lost in when you have anxiety about actual stress.

Generally it's good to know what it is and be able to identify when you're doing it, so you can consciously correct yourself. Like if you can harness that avoidant stress behavior for your creative porpoises it can be great, but you still need to do what you were supposed to do otherwise it's a useless superpower.
