TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Now I've been fucking around for some time, and I've read all the books listed above already, but if I understand the theory really well, I've been slacking on applying them to actualy drawing and so I totally still suck.

Start with a neutral / light gray background and make a value composition.

See the pic I attached, one I posted last week. Specifically the top right hand corner where a proper layout is done.

You have established only the places where you will paint (or "sculpt" even) the eyes, nose, lips etc etc. but in your "pencil" layout there are no defined planes. Only thing you have defined is bottom and the side of the nose, and some parts underneath the brow ridge. That is a good place to start.

For rendering a picture like this, you should start with a three or four value system. Make a neutral gray background. Paint four swatches, dark gray, neutral gray, light gray, and some very light gray almost white for possible highlights. After that don't touch the color wheel again.

Use color picker to pick those three (or four) swatches and sample colors on face. It will be a lot easier if you have drawn these planes like in pic attached. USE HARD BRUSH. Block out the values.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bDlUN_8h0M Videos like these are good, check out how to construct individual parts of face. Nose, eyes, mouth etc. You can see how he draws the different planes before he blocks the color in. But don't go to color yet, use that three or four value system to simplify, and when you have blocked everything out, start smoothing the edges. This is how you learn to convey the form of the 3D objects in a 2D painting.

Hope this helps.

I'll clear this out a little bit more - you had established the side and bottom plane of nose, and bottom plane of brow ridge, but there is a lot more to it. Nose is way more complex 3D shape sticking forward from the general front plane of the face. We can divide it to a few more planes than front, two sides and a bottom.

After learning to construct all these forms (there are few examples for constructing eyes in the pic I posted just before), you can render them out more efficiently.

Also check out "Asaro heads" from the internet, it's a great model showing simplified planes of the head. You don't have to spend money on it, but check out pictures of it from different angles.

The lines are just there as a general guideline, I don't really intend to keep them. Anon, it looks good, but you need to put in more effort, great results will come from really getting in there and defining those shapes and planes. Don’t forget the background, no matter how unimportant it seems, even just an added shadow will change the perception of values within the subject. You need to push those lights and darks, not arbitrarily, but notice those small spots where the light hits extra bright like the line defining the bridge of the nose, or where the darks hit extra dark, like where the shadow defines the edge of the brow. This is a good start, but it looks like just the second step in an extensive multi step process. You risk being deviant-art tier bad. Or you could at most reach the level of this drawing I did a few days ago which I'm still hating because it totally feels like a kid's doodle.

To properly draw is to internalize forms and feelings. The easier way to do this is by working with pen and paper doing the lines yourself and feeling it, looking how shit your lines is and how your "human" looks more like a smurf, and trying again dozens of times until you get it right.

Do it for a long enough time and you'll have "internalized" the human figure and heads and stuff. Pen and paper is the best for noticing how shit you are and how to improve.
On digital everything looks pretty and you're focusing more on creating an appealing, correct image that you can look at. I don't know how else to say it. Basically digital looks less shit since digital ink is pretty and you will improve way slower or you may stop improving at all since you'll realize you can erase and correct until you have a pretty drawing.

The tablet is just a tool anon no more no less, bad habits are formed by bad practices but they are formed both for digital and traditional mediums. It also depends on what you wish to achieve. If you goal is to learn traditional then obviously you should go with that but you wouldn't be asking about the table otherwise so I assume it is not.

If your goal is to learn digital art then any tablet is good to start out. Fundamentals remain the same regardless.

Bad habits you could develop is using undo too much or , but that is the same as erasing everything with pencil. Other bad habits is to rely too much on digital functions instead of understanding what you are doing like not planing enough because you can edit everything not understanding color or values because you can just adjust them later. That however can both be fixed easily by study or just ignored because it makes your life easier and the end product is the only thing that matter how you made it doesn't.

So don't worry there aren't man dangers that you cannot fix easily by being an intelligent person.

How do you guys construct your bodies? I'm having trouble consistently getting a form down because I'm unconfident and flip-flop between different shapes for the torso and waist. Often I draw something that looks good to me, then I draw it again and the new picture is garbage. Like I haven't learned anything from drawing the first and getting it to look good was just lucky.

About the abusing "Undo", that's why I started my drawing practices with a pen. I don't regret it. Using ink really limits you in a good way; you know once it's done it's done and you can move to a different figure if it didn't work instead of getting stuck trying to correct it. Now I tend to try to do things perfectly in one go with careful calculation since I still feel like failing means the drawing is ruined (or I'll have to chicken-scratch to change it into something else)

Hey anon, yeah that’s what I would do. You have laid down a good base for your drawing, the only reason I was able to do my revision so well was because you’re underdrawing is so solid. That is the key word, underdrawing. Your final piece should be completely new and completely or almost completely cover that drawing. Its purpose is to inform the forms, shapes and values you paint on top like a guide so your final piece can be more precise and clean. Don’t feel married to what you have already done, the next step is to improve upon it.

That's why you're a beginner, that's why the idea of simplifying items into basic shapes is super important.

Most artists work off of references even at the highest level when they're going to do something that demands a certain level of detail.

Ideally you want to memorize the 5 fundamental shapes. Sphere, Cube, Pyramid, Cone and Cylinder.

If you want to go traditional, then why are you using a tablet in the first place?
A decent enough tablet and knowledge of photoshop lets you replicate whatever control or effect you'd produce with a real pen/pencil.

Anon, you know what you have to do, you even wrote “tiny legs” on your paper. Sometimes it’s not real until someone else says it, I get it.

Work on your proportions anon. It’s difficult especially with the poses you’re drawing. Perspective, overlap, foreshortening, they really do complicate things. You have to measure more thouroughly, don’t just eyeball it, you aren’t at that point yet.

It warms my cold dead heart to see you practicing anatomy and trying to instill that knowledge into your mind, but all the anatomy in the world will not save your drawing if you apply it to faulty construction. Block out the overall shapes and forms with the correct perspective and proportions first, then apply your anatomical knowledge. If you do it the other way around like it appears you did here, you are just wasting time fleshing out an inherently flawed figure. It will become second nature with time and you’ll be able to skip steps as you gain more experience, but for now, you need to go from the general forms of the overall figure first, then to the specific forms created by the anatomical muscles after.

Keep it up anon, post progress.

>> No.3667681

>>3667500
Aside from just keeping at it, biggest advice I can see from your drawings is that you should study individual bodyparts closely. Especially arms and legs.
Study foreshortening. Those pieces have almost none and it's part of the reason the legs look proportional, but small.

I felt fairly pleased with this (as a beginner). It doesn't look very much like the model, but it looks better than anything else I've drawn. Took about 10-15 minutes.
I'm gonna keep drawing portraits like this because it turns out it's super fun, but I'd like to get some crit on what obv flaws are and what I should do to address them, what I'm clearly not aware of and hopefully some positive feedback as well.

Anon, drawings take hours, if not days. Michelangelo took 4 years to paint the Sistine chapel. You are just dipping your toes in, testing the waters, I understand, but unless you have a decades of experience, more than 15 minutes of effort is needed to create a good drawing. I would say effort is the largest thing lacking.

That being said, for a guy who started a couple of days ago and for 10 to 15 minutes, not bad. You need to read some books man, get an idea on how to construct a base for your drawing using simple shapes and forms. You need to learn how to draw using light and form instead of the library if symbols your head uses as shorthand to easily understand the world around you.

Start with Fun With A Pencil, and actually read it, don’t just look at the pictures and exercises. Good luck, keep having fun anon.

Thanks anon, I get pretty antsy after what I'm drawing starts to look like something, so I kind of just left it where it was. That, and I feel what I gain most from working on right now is initial measuring and establishing base elements without overworking them needlessly.

I've been working with loomis as well, but it feels way different than drawing straight from reference and my blooks look like shit. What exactly should I focus on? I kind of just want to draw cubes and shapes fitting together without thinking of the character of the drawing, I don't find the style very fun.

I get that feeling anon, you’re drawing, you’re finally getting something you feel is decent for your skill and experience level and you don’t want to mess it up, you don’t want to overwork it and somewhere inside you know you don’t know enough to take it further. The thing is, you’re just starting, you’re at the bottom of the mountain climbing up. You’re more free than anyone else right now, there are no stakes, there is no pressure. It’s natural to be proud of what you draw when you do well, but right now, for your level, everything you draw is like a sacrificial lamb to the fire. It isn’t meant to be good, it’s meant to serve a higher purpose, your education.

As for the thing about loomis, yeah he can be pretty dull sometimes, and it’s an old book with at times an out of fashion cartooning style, but the style isn’t what the book is about at its root. He is trying to give you a frame work and a general process for how to approach a blank canvas and turn it into more than the sum of its parts. He is trying to teach you to start first with a generalized form and then slowly by cutting away and adding on “material” sculpting a face or a figure or an object. I think this is as specific as I’m able to articulate, what you need to focus on. How to build that generalized base drawing, before moving in to the specific, that is why reading loomis and practicing those exercises are important, because it can eventually apply to everything, no matter if it’s imagined or referenced. But hey that shape thing sound like a good idea too. Draw some fruit, do a still life, they are basically just slightly warped basic forms like cubes spheres and cylinders. At this point it’s also important not to forget that you actually enjoy this. Good luck anon.

Do warm lights and cool shadows? Maybe just implicate the background by loosing some of that detail from the background.

There is little construction to the face and everything feels really flat apart from the nose bridge.

See other digital and traditional paintings from bars and nightclubs. Make a list of what you like and what you don't like. Then choose the color scheme of the final image and stick to that. You need to re-do this there is no quick fix.

Great job on this anon, to give it form I introduces a secondary light source roughly from the left side as rim lighting is the generic technique used in most visual media this can help you to flesh out the character's form I kind of ruined the right side a bit as I added more on the left and tried to add a reflected light source from the right but it sucks. This can give the character more roundness for example adding more light to one side of the face, nose, forehead, lips jewelry, hands. That was almost all I did so my contribution is minor. I really love the hand you made and was scared that I butcher it.

Great to know you still didn't give up! Sadly I have no clue about charcoal so I have no idea how you do it so I can only cheat using digital to advise here is how I would change it.

Trim the lips on the left a bit and make the left corner inside of the mouth dark to make the teeth less flat. Make the skin a bit darker around the eye and make the eyelids a bit lighter, then make the eyelid curve upwards. The goal is to give the sphere-sitting in a hole feeling stronger for the eyeball.

Make the left side of the lips slightly darker since the light is coming from the right side so they are in shadow. Add a bit of a line to the corner of the mouth, the mouth is generally not 100% lips after all, there is a subtle little corner to it.

Other random ideas is to make the cheek a bit puffier becasue her cheekbone seems flat, the neck slimmer and more curved in and you can generally add more tones to the hair where it feels to be facing towards the light You can add a few highlights spots if it is possible (dunno how you do it with charcoal) to the eyeball's right side and the inner corner of the right eye those are wet and reflective points and facing the light source.

Don't be lazy and draw proper heads. I know you're studying poses, but you'll need to draw perspective-aligned heads when you draw poses for real, so why aren't you drawing them now?
Some of those are decent, some of them are awful. I'd suggest just doing some general anatomy studies. A lot of stuff in there looks symbol drawn still.

And as a general advice, try using a smaller brush and being more loose with your strokes. Drawing anatomy from the getgo with hard lines is not easy. Sketch, then refine.

You should NEVER try to draw hair by drawing every flick of it that is unnecessary and pointless. Draw shapes in varied sizes and forms and shade them accordingly as the hairstyle needs it. Find where the hair starts and then go from there following the curvature of the head then gravity, unless the hair was fixes by a some way using gel or instruments then follow those.

How do I draw bandages better?

I've got no idea how they work logistically

>> No.3668411

>>3668406
Grab a bandage and wrap it around your arm, take note of how it goes around the form and where fabric folds are likely to appear.

Keep in mind the thickness, texture, and softness of the fabric to prevent it looking like a scarf (which yours kind of does). Also remember that bandages serve the purpose of binding dressings to would and are usually wrapped quite tightly, anything loose will look like it'll come undone easily.

You're in the uncanny valley, you have a simplified face without simplified forms. This is why it is more difficult to stylize since you are deviating away from life drawing and into something that is abstract. If you want to define form you are going to need to be very subtle in a way you imply form rather than refine it.

>> No.3668424

>>3668417

thank you for the guidance. I guess this is what people mean when trying to make something like a cartoon face, with overly rendered forms. Realistic shading on a non realistic form.
Not to say my rendering is good, my values are ok, i'm probably making a lot of mistakes there too, but I guess what you are saying.

Make forms more simple, shading more subtle when painting simplistic forms.

Okay guys, I just discovered that I was a natural left handed but due to elementary school professors being assholes, I was forced to write/draw/etc., with my right hand. (I have no recollection of it)
I decided to try my left hand at drawing for the first time and it is surprisingly good (It's still crap but not as awful as I expected)
So my question is, has any of you successfully learned to draw with both of your hands? I know it will take time to develop proper skill with my left hand but I felt really comfortable doodling some (Rembrandt) faces so I'm willing to try.

Tubby figure is the best part, especially with how well you can see that the belly, breasts, and head are in space. That singular stroke capturing the sag of the breast is fucking sweet, too. The weight of the belly hitting the platform is my favorite part.

But I wish there was more implication of the face, especially on the seated figure's right eyesocket, where you'd definitely see shadow. The seated figure is weirding me out in general, largely because of how big the head is compared to the body. Also your limbs could use more definition, since they look more like noodley cylinders than sculptural forms of muscle and bone.

Nice stuff, in general. You make me wish I was in a life drawing class again.

what you want to do, especially while you're learning is work out the palette away from the actual picture, so you think about the colour of the skin, the lighting, and you make a few tones for the lit skin and a few for the skin in shadow. then you eyedrop those and paint up your face, making any adjustments for local variation on the palette.

and keep the paint opaque if you can, if you're finding it really hard you can use a very small brush, as if it were a coloured pencil, but that's a bad habit in the long run.
you might also want to do a tonal drawing first, ie black and white, and paint over that, either opaque or using a layer mode to make it easier.

once you're used to thinking in a palette kinda way you can go back to sliders.

also seeing it's an orc you might want to have a look for guides on how to paint orc skin on warhammer figures.

I tried to fuse my understanding of Hamtons gesture drawing and Loomis' mannequin.

Look for perspective plan projections. Once you get the gist you can apply the concept to anything. It would still be quicker to use a model/reference if one is available.

Some basic ideas anon. The background has a powerful influence on who you view the picture. using a pure white background can be very distorting to the eyes o I suggest you try to use a grey or a muted colored background when you start or paint the base background color first before you start to color.

When you color pick for your palette or just on the fly try to use a curved line along the color square/triangle that most softwares have as you pick your lighter and darker colors. As the color's saturation decreases as more and more light it reflects when using the generic non-colored white-yellowish sunlight/spotlight. Same goes to the darker parts, when the thing goes into shadow it loses its vibrancy.

When mixing colors on the wheel when you start to move the color slider from one base color to another from green towards red or yellow for example. If you want the them to work well together and stay coherent then mute the colors into grayness because then they work better together and the main color can stay pure and saturated to provide the bulk of the color.

pic added with the palette I mainly used and the ideas I said

Sounds like someone that avoids drawing things in a certain perspective because it's hard.

oh fucking snap anon! I love how smooth rendering is and the values are r super soft and pleasing, I wish I could render just half as good as this hnnnnngh!

Here is my attempt, the hat needs to sit on the head properly, it seems like it is falling off. I rearranged the face a bit, although it is off on mine. Pay attention on how the eyes, nose and lips line up the seems to be some misalignment there. I know the hat and the tilted angle of her head throws everything out of whack.

I'm just inconsistent in my rendering. I'm exiting /beg/ finally so one drawing will have shitty and good aspects. But yes, I really did that.
