I'm learning how to digitally paint to do justice to this drawing, it's supposed to be shiny and colorful.
It's part of a practice I devised. I look at flowers or plants and try to convert them into a character, it's fun. They have interesting patterns to give you ideas.

The good news is that the thumbnail looks good. The bad news is that it’s been severely overworked. Find your value and color, put your paint on the brush, make a stroke, and leave it alone until you have the canvas covered. Then go back and make corrections. Otherwise it looks like you’ve been painting in mud.

Proportions seem all over the place. Almost Hobbit-like with those feet. Small head, short legs (thighs specifically). That forearm definitely has a compound fracture, as the position of the hand isn't correct. I can see what you were going for with the form shadow of the forearm, but it's way sharper than it needs to be.

I feel like you have a problem that I struggle with too. You've done studies of the parts of the body individually, but now need to synthesize them and do more studies of the body as a whole to get the relationships/transitions/proportions down. That's my 2 cents at least. Neat character anyway, kind of reminds me of an Egyptian death god.

This style is gross. Get rid of those anime faces that look like they were made by an 8yr old. You're attempting to make a very amateur cartoon look realistic and it does not work.

Drop your style and study figure drawing from the beginning. Learn properly rather than haphazardly piecing together parts of a figure and then sticking a badly done anime head on top.

Thinking in terms of simple boxes and using them as a guide allows you to more naturally & organically draw within the confines of those boxes while still having a guide that keeps track of the general perspective & forms/planes of what you're drawing.

It's always still work, but if you are actually good at what you are drawing, it will feel less tedious. You will enjoy working on it and seeing it evolve.

And to draw mech shit, you must have a good sense for style. You want your design to look sleek like a Porsche. Yours looks rather like a box.

When I did pic related, for example, I had designs in mind from various things like anime, video games, real life aircraft, and then just tried to do my own version of it. Once you get the basic shapes down, you start adding details.

Looks off perspective on the backside. I'm following Scott's How to draw lately so I've wondered the same myself. I've seen people sketch great mechs right of the bat so I believe yeah, you can, but not sure how much industrial design work do you need under your belt to pull that off. Pic is example of one of my attempts at applying what's explained on the book. Might be off, I had to eyeball some sections because they looked weird. Still trying to work through at the mo.

>>3664670 Fantastic. I guess you can always work it out more but I wish I could understand painting to such level. Such a long road ahead.

>>3664789
I like it, I feel the hands should be bigger, probably even extra big sized to go with the style.

>>3665228 Those colors are superb, the brushstrokes on the body aren't working for me, try something more controlled and softer? More feathery, if that makes sense.

>>3665277
Looks unbalanced they way you have her standing as of now. She's falling sideways or at least her right leg (left side) would be under overexertion.

>>3665474
Looks good as thumb but up close the brushtrokes aren't appealing, simpler shapes are cool but those squiggly lines kill the sense of what you are looking at, try more controlled hierarchy of large to small shapes to introduce detail, maybe shape some of the edges with hints of leaves.

>>3665700
Mouth looks off perspective wise/angling and the expression is hard to read, like the eyes/eyebrows give a sense of worry but the mouth I feel a faint smile? Not sure what are you going for.

Eventually you internalize the construction in perspective so it's less tedious. It's also a framework for getting your drawing right with almost no guesswork. Another issue I have with it is that her body proportions look really weird unless you were going for that stylistically. Her head looks really big so it should either be decreased in size or the torso should be more foreshortened. She looks like she has the proportions of someone barely taller than a midget.

Draw out some vanishing point lines and work within those confines for the initial steps. Then you can refine it so it's based on a generally correct construction.

Hm, well Sall, (the green one), has always had a bit more gesture going on than the others, because I was afraid making them too "rubbery" would cause a sort of uncanny effect, but if it's something that became noticeable I'll attempt injecting more gesture into the other characters.

That being said, do take into account the other thing you noticed. Right now it's a scene where they're sitting around and talking, so it's not going to have too much movement going on. At the same time, I've gotten some ideas because of you saying that, so thanks.

Focus more on the hair. Try to draw a plain shape in black (make sure it's not too big for the skull) and then add the strokes in a finer brush. Would love to see the rest of the illustration. I think you're at a point where you should do the background into what you want it to be and merge this guy into it so you can start messing around with his edges compared to the snow and trees. Obviously you'd want to bring the rest of the characters in your scene to this level before doing this.

Some things still look flat, like the horn on his head and the rod he's holding but that's okay since you're not quite done with this. I guess this is supposed to be an overcast day so you should really put some nice ambient occlusion on him and get rid of those cast shadows on parts of his jacket (unless there's actually a proper ligh-source somewhere).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fLV5ezO64w < AO tutorial. (he's a shitty artist but a good teacher)

Might be interesting to fuck around with the BG so some of the trees get some really hard light through the clouds to bring the focus to the area where you want it.

Another thing you might want to focus on is overall tone. Like, everything doesn't have to be the local color. You really should merge the whole thing, do a color overlay or something and treat this as your underpainting. Anyways, that's how I'd approach it but I dunno. I'm just a fucking dickhead.

Pic. related is something that's shaded with pretty much pure AO (Maxim Verehin). Not amazing art but I hope you get my point. GG anyways anon. This looks promising!
