I tried doing it, and the result is not good. The jewels look like ass, and even the mirror frame, which should be rather simple to do, is throwing me off harder than it should.

Any suggestions on how to improve in those regards? Or suggestions in general.

>> No.3664103

>>3664073

Try to aim for lower level of detail and a more painterly treatment. The more detailed/photographic you're going for the more precise you have to be with measurements and yours are off by a wide margin. It's better to include less detail and get the general shapes right than painting everything but poorly. Things like jevewlry should best be treated with abstraction and look like splatches of color up close. Photorealism will take you 50-100 hours.

The skull is misshapen. Get the drawing right before painting. Get the shapes and planes right first. Texturing should be saved for later.

The jewels should be treated as a pattern or a texture, with geometry given only to the larger pieces. Metal has a wide value range, so go for very bright lights against dark and rich shades. It's okay to speckle some pure whites and pure blacks in there.

how do people past a certain skill level just acquire the ability to copy a reference so well, i'm not even an absolute beginner and i still can't fathom this.

This was actually my first photostudy in a year or so and I tried it because I wanted to force myself to finally try one. You can see it in the initial line-drawing which isn't very accurate, and even up to now where the skull and posture has warped compared to the original.
The biggest thing I think is working the image as a whole, when you compare >>3663124
to >>3665487 and >>3664073 in terms of just the jaw jewelry, >>3663124 probably isnt much better in terms of measurements and placement of the jems but it looks so much better because he's drawing not the jewelry flat on but the impression of it like >>3664112
recommends. The light and dark is there and your mind fills the rest.

When I paint it I'm having 3 windows open, one for my painting, one for the reference right by it and one for me to actually paint on, and as I'm working it Im looking mostly at the zoomed out painting, seeing if the big overall shapes are matching up, or if my random strokes are summing up to the impression of jewelry. For this photostudy the mindset I have right now isnt to get an exact 1:1 copy but to learn how to imply the visual info in the reference in a painting without actually having to copy every pixel.

thank you for the insightful post anon. i think a lot of the problem is that i don't think like a painter yet, i don't know how to simplify colors and convey planes, i always did draw mostly based off lines and worse yet contour instead of forms
it's just so tiring sometimes trying and immediately seeing how i failed. feels like i improved a lot since my earlier drawings but the climbing difficulty just got harder and more stressing
but yeah thanks again

>acquire the ability to copy

I don't copy directly, I construct. I mainly draw cartoons. I'm not concerned about accuracy to the reference, but logic within the drawing. The logic is okay, so the drawing seems right without necessarily being accurate, which is tedious and difficult.

It's also worth noting how simple and sloppy the coloring can be when using glazing/overlay. It's not always the proper approach, but in this case the reference already looks like a Flemish painting.

Painting a monochromatic painting then adding colors to it using a combination of effect layers, usually overlay, multiple, or color in photoshop, or simply a layer with low opacity. If the monochromatic painting is already very tight, this would allow you to add colors without destroying the value structure and edges already present in the monochrome layer.

I mean things like symmetry, perspective, alignment. Those are things you can figure out for your drawing without constantly looking back to your reference.

If you try to direct copy and get 90% of it spot on while 10% of it is slightly off, the entire drawing will feel off. If you construct the drawing and 90% of it is slightly off from the reference, but all the proportions and placement and midlines within the drawing feel consistent with each other, then the drawing will feel okay.
