Hey /draw/, I just recently was given a nice set of gouache paint that I want to learn to use. I've never used it before, not even really regular watercolor.
Anyone have any good videos/tutorials/books on how to use it? Or should I just say fuck the technical stuff and start messing around with it on my own?

the folds are quite ok, but your hatching is what's not on spot in my opinion. I always kind of try to either create a tone in the hatching that makes you believe that it is creating values evenly, so that the actual structure kinda dissipates. Or, I will try to make the hatching at least follow the tendency of the object surface. In your drawing, you have all different kinds of angles on the pillows and blanket and I think that is what's kind of giving it a weird, unnatural tilt.

IMO, the left hand is anatomically wrong. Either rotate the torso towards that back hand or move that hand closer to the torso (and reestablish the elbow). Do you see it?

Love your work pyros0me!

Looking at this (especially in the context of your recent drawings), I think the biggest issues are these:

+ The glider sort of blends in with the background too much in that spot at the top of it where it slopes up. It's like it seems disconnected from the harsh shadows of its underside - the swoosh just makes kind of a weird tangent.

+ I think the tower could use something more interesting added to it - it's a little too simple. The windows seem sort of randomly placed and the platforms have nothing on them. What is this tower for? How do you get in / out of it when you land on the platforms?

+ A minor thing: The perspective of the little figure doesn't match the glider. It seems like their right (our left) shoulder & arm would be out of view, but right now it looks like they're falling out. Also, I think it would be better if he/she was looking forward and not off to their side.

+ Have you considered adding another compositional element popping out of the clouds on the right side of the composition? Another tower way off in the distance? A smaller mountain peak?

Best way to put it is that it's really just freeing, I suppose? Cliche as that sounds, it's gone back to feeling like a hobby as opposed to work. I think the increase in motivation has actually more than compensated for the decrease in dedication to study, too, which is great. I'm reading books on character design because I want to instead of books on construction because I "should" now. Guess time will tell.

Use the beg thread next time. But I'll tell you, those arms are too short. Put your hands down and see how far they reach; they should be around half your thighs. If you extend that mannequin's arms they definitely don't go down all the way there. Also that pose for grabbig a gun doesn't seem correct, look for references of soldiers standing or something. A hand should be at the trigger and other one for the barrel. Also the legs are a bit short I think, but I'm having doubts, my redline probably isn't correct either but it's an improvement making it slightly more 3D/

Also I'm impressed, at first I wanted to say the weird torso was off since I like doing human figures in a hourglass style (curved at the middle to better define the chest and hips), but the broad torso seems correct after this redline. All in all you just need to internalize human anatomy better, you'll know the proportions without having to look them up after a week of study, 1 month tops.
And this is all only if you want to be semi-realistic, for a cartoon your human looks fine enough (except for the tiny arms and hands, those aren't fooling anyone, but you could make them larger and leave the legs the same to keep that minimalistic cartoon vibe)

Right off the bat...
Smaller eyes
Wider face (or shorten his head)
Outer eye corner distance should be wider (although this may be fixed when you downsize the eyes)
Nose bridge should be wider
Bottom lip should be a tad bit rounder/thicker

I can kinda see what you’re doing now and think it has potential to be a pretty fun piece. That being said, if this is for something more comedic, don’t be afraid to push his features a bit, bordering on a caricature.

1) IMO, the girl on the right looks skinny based on her chin line, neck and waist. But her bum and hips don't correlate with that.
2) Her foot is not svelte and gracious, and the heel here is a bit fat, as well as the calf.
Let her lose at leat 5% of her weight beneath the waist line. Maybe you tried to show foreshortening, IDK.
3) The left girl looks a bit plump / chubby, which is cool and you can play on contrast between the girls. Though, her waist line on both sides is a bit weird, and a bum line is a bit strange as well.
4) Don't hide the foot of the left girl, if the paper sheet is off, glue another one beneath and add the foot.
5) Their triangular pose is winning.

P.S. I'm a total noob, take it with a grain of salt.

I feel you. I sort of have the same experience, but you have to take into consideration that what inspire us isn't necessary the same we can achieve. That, said the difference I can see between cartoons and realism is all about proportions, form understanding through value and perspective. Cartoons are usually symbolic or simplified in certain degrees. So have you try to work on being able to draw with good value shapes, and focus on measuring realistic proportions? With the addition of perspective?
I'm still working on this so I can't say it's the solution, just wanting to hear what was your approach until now.

Any comments on this? It's my first time painting and I'm overwhelmed by the variety of colors. Basically I have the highlights, the HIGHERlights, midtones and shadows.
First one I think looks the most like a real metallic armor (and I can make it better with some cyan) but while I like it, it was supposed to be a black armor when I drew it.

And I'm not convinced on that black armor, I feel like it doesn't look as good. But you tell me, any opinions are welcome. This digital thing is both fun and stressful since I have so much control so I don't stop messing things up, I haven't progressed in hours already.

I suppose one of my problems is I don't use basic shapes in my construction. I do think about perspective, but when building my forms I try to feel out it's raw shape.

So I guess I could try to figure out a new way to approach drawing, but I just don't like spending too much time on the skeleton because it fills the page with unnecessary lines. Proportion is something I have trouble with even on my reference drawings so idk.

It looks like you're starting to get it, but you still need to overcome these beg bad habits:

Use a bigger brush, practice painting stuff with as few strokes as possible, because right now your strokes are quite messy. There's no reason for you to be painting large areas with a bunch of small strokes like on his hat for example. You also shouldn't be trying to render every wrinkle on his forehead.
Don't paint individual strands of hair, or make it a blurry overblended mess (or both).
Choose your values more carefully, I don't know how the reference looks but right now it's all over the place, every part of the face has small chunks of the darkest and lightest values. Don't try to create a gradient with lots of hardbrush strokes, commit to hard contrasting values or just blend the paint if you want to.
That said, again, focus on big shapes, that one fold on his clothes on his right side is the best part of this whole portrait, just two beautiful simple shapes.

Keep going anon, just a few more days you'll be at least better than Brian.

I wish I could post multiple images in one post, but here's a collage of references and stuff for you to practice instead.

Thanks. Pretty much. I usually do the sketch, block in major values and shadows, then I’ll go in and refine things. I use a hard round, and a blender brush that has some texture (although I don’t use it much anymore). I also use a lasso tool a lot to try and get hard edges.

lots of motion indeed. What's going on on the page reads a bit choppy, I think the first panel should be up higher than the second. You could basically put the first panel more in the top left corner where all that empty space is and maybe go full body with your illustration of the characters in that panel. If you moved the second panel to the bottom right corner you'd have room for that big exclamation point in the top right corner.

So in a desperate attempt to make my shit slightly more appealing to normies I decided to poorly copy the latest League of Legends splash style, I can't even do that right, I'm too old to know what kids like anymore, or perhaps that's an excuse and I'm just a boring prick. Thing is I'm literally a refugee (of the spic variety, running from commies) and I depend on my pathetic art to survive and help out my old parents in the motherland. I don't know what to do /ic/, but at any rate, any critiques? In all honesty I won't change shit since I already spent two nights doing this and I don't charge nearly enough but you guys know your stuff and I'd really appreciate some insight on where are the areas I need to focus more in order to improve. Thanks a bunch guys.

Make the clothing slightly transparent. If the light is coming from behind then paint that area of cloth with some light bleeding through and indicate her legs inside. Also the wings, and edges of the hair could have some SSS. The green balls are too uniformly arranged. Some should probably be partially occluded by the red clothing.

Here's a quick example, i also added some hair flyaways that would be present even in a braid...you could experiment with the amount to your liking. For the clothiing i just did a 70-80% opacity layer set to luminosity with the local color but desaturated and whitened, then i blended the inside edge a bit. For the wings an overlay layer thats the same color as the wings but reddened and brightened a bit

Well, because other people pay for my rent. I lost hope in my own tastes a long time ago, the shit I like to draw nobody gives a fuck about and I need them to if I intend to buy food. I'm not saying they have bad taste, quite on the contrary, I think it's me who lacks an aesthetic sense (ironic, drawing for hobby/living knowing that) and I need to adapt if I want to keep doing this for a living and mind you, being an unwilling immigrant in a non-developed country leaves you with very little in way of choices for income, so I do the best I can and make use of what previously was a hobby to make ends. I apologize if that sounds aggressive, I don't mean to be confrontational, I know you typed that with the best intentions mate and it shows, I'm just not in the best place right now, both figuratively and literally.

Nice quads.

And this is more or less the kinda stuff I enjoy doing. By the time this was being done I was already trying to copy the LoL style but it still works to show what I mean; I love doing detailed crap with ultra clean linework. My line weight is not best, and of course there's a bunch of flaws but it's more or less what I do. You need to analyze their work better if you want to emulate it. Most of Riot splash arts have 1 warm light source and 1 cool light source, quite conservative use of light areas vs dark areas and very diagonal compositions.

That's just off the top of my head so put some more effort into figuring out the formula before copying it.

Thank you man. In all honesty, I lack the eye to catch up that sort of stuff, of course I'll keep them in mind now that you pointed them out but my point remains, I only tried to emulate their character design & rendering more than their composition design since that, for the time being, goes way beyond what I can do. Not sure why can't you not just make league of legends fanart to sell in your own style? I mean, people trend like that all the time, just do your own style for known LoL characters and see if you land some customers.

>>3660113 Damn, so simple but they look so good. I really like the blonde. The center guy is looking odd proportionally at least, I think you want him to look old but the proportions remind me of a child or a teen.

>>3660205 Try picking your colors/values beforehand, mix them up somewhere. I do believe there's a way to make underpaintings, to block in the starting values but I don't know much about oils.

>>3660485 Maybe I would say the highlights for the hair are a bit too strong, use darker values, just a bit lighter than the local hair value is usually fine, you can use really strong light values for backlit face I guess.
I think the skeleton is turning it's head too much backwards but it's an animated skeleton after all so it can probably do it ha. So far you enjoy it, just keep it up. You can try pushing your values more or trying different light setups. I'm terrible at those things so I can't really give you good advice on it.

So it's very sketchy at the mo and I wasn't sure if asking at this stage for some critique but, I did a quick color blocking to see how it might end up looking. Mostly to decide when I redraw everything if I want to add more details or sections. So far I'm considering making the boots have some kind of similar dark plating like the bow and "wings". Also this way I can spot mistakes, so far the eyes I need to align better, the bow shape needs to be fixed and I feel the back leg is short? Or more like the thigh is short.
If anyone else spots anything or wants to chip in, l'd love to hear what you think. Thanks beforehand!

I don't like how forced and "pin-upy" the pose feels. Mostly with the curvature of the spine, as I actually like the posed legs. Consider what direction she's moving in 3D space, and whether the wings on her back are carrying her upwards and if you need to reflect that in the overall weight distribution.

Easiest adjustment would be to cut out the lower body from the bottom of the breast to the feet, and shift that chunk over to the left a bit.

>> No.3660602

>>3660589
I got someone mention something like that and it's alright, I actually was going for a forced pin up pose to spice things up. Actually I wanted and even more aggressive pose for it but then I decided to just try and have something softer? Thus the gentle curvature. I want to imagine she would take the shot at the apex or in free fall, trying to aim while having something drag you up or down or some direction (the wings movement) would be tricky. The wings nonetheless are just there posed like so to aid in the direction, I even wanted to use the right wing to sort of "aim the shot". So it's more of a cosmetic pose. If I did that for an action scene I would plan it differently, at least I think so.

If you want to you can try and doing that cut and posting it so I can see what you mean better, but I think you mean you would like to straighten the pose so it's not reclining backwards maybe?

Yeah, so less reclining for the cut, that cut would be nice if I kinda also put the body going inside in perspective I think but it would feel like jumping from a ledge instead of flying then. I really like the 2nd option, that one would work really well for freefall! I would turn the wings to get the feel of updraft then also, that's a nice one. I think the original then works nicely for an apex shot, albeit being "pin-upy" as you say. Like she's slowing down but the legs are following the force still? Sort of like in animation "follow through action" effects. Then it makes more sense that curving design I incidentally added. I probably stick with the pose I have originally just for the sake of pushing out the image but thanks a lot for the input! I appreciate it.

Hey boys, I can't draw for shit so I essentially gave up, but I have a career unfolding in totally unrelated field so I don't feel too bad.

Still, every once in a while I get the itch do something art-related, so I did pic related. I just love this type of animation/effect and I don't see much like it, so I thought I'd give it a try and it turned out pretty OK.

Any idea where I could share my shitty "art" like this? If there are people out there who want to see/have stuff like this, I'd like them to have it. Webm related is my phone background right now, as you can actually set a video as a background. What do you think?

I like everything else but why is she wearing basic bitch jeans? She's got medieval fantasy armor on her but those pants look like something you could get from H&M.

Anyways. GJ. Which field are you getting into btw? Hope you never let go of art completely.
