I think they are just referring to studies where people are able to do tasks more quickly when they are not “multitasking”. You should do whatever works for you though. Obviously listening to music and drawing is better than not drawing at all.

You're literally applying advanced mathematics when drawing anime; rotating objects in space using geometry that can otherwise only be calculate with computers. No one is impressed with your shitty doctorate in feminist dance therapy.

i really feel that people should take in to account what book this is from; the animators survival kit (which is actually quite a good book), which was written in like the 80's. thats important because the internet wasnt around in the 80's, so radio and electronic music were the growing generations daily technological overstimulation. if you updated this passage to "turn your phone and internet off" i think most people would agree that they could do without fucking facebook or anything like that while they try to work. this isnt even speculatory, there is hard evidence that shows social media and internet access through smartphones is eroding our ability to concentrate. such studies are always done on fast to finish tasks, nobody is going to sit thru a few hours of a task observing somebody, and then repeating it for 999 other subjects

and for something you can finish in 10-15 min no music is a no brainer, in 10 min you don't even have time to think over what you are doing

marathon like tasks on the other hand, having something always running in the background to remind you of what you were suppose to do when your mind starts to lip away is always a good thing

Absolutely this.
I oftentimes use one of those 1-3 hour instrumental music channels on youtube like The Soul of Wind or Relaxing Music Pro.
Also "smaller" asian artists oftentimes have amazing instrumental music to work with like "불꽃심장 Music" (Yang Su Hyeok) for example.

>> No.3649093

Obviously as anon with no sauce I cannot confirm, but I'm pretty sure it's music that has understandable lyrics for people which is distracting.
There was a study where people were made to do some task like study while listening to Beethoven, instrumental music, music with easy to understand lyrics, foreign lyric music, and nothing, and the Beethoven, instrumental, and foreign listeners all saw a boost in test scores and focus. I'm sure the same thing is true for drawing. Again I don't have sauce so choose to believe or not.

>> No.3649097

>>3649093
I think you cannot exactly compare that here since art uses different parts of your brain. I absolutely cannot do maths or read something with understandable music, but I can still draw. Instrumental music is still better though.

Background noise can't really influence your gains. If you are more focused on the music than on what you are drawing, then that's a different thing.
I always have some kind of background noise while I work, but for me usually it's comedy series I've already watched where I can just listen to the jokes and have a laugh here and there. This kind of stuff never really influenced me.

I'm still making a very decent living off my art.
