Why do you guys care so little about clothing/drapery? All you talk about is figure drawing. 90% of the links in the mega are figure drawing. All the critiques are only on anatomy/proportions.

There was a thread about studying fashion not so long ago, that opened my eyes to a new way of getting a sense of how clothing works. I'm studying Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery too, but I feel there's way too many folds in his drawings. Also studying statues.

in art schools, you start to really value showing your work to certain people, because they have a stronger connection or understanding with what kind of artist you are, and also, they offer real critique. Basically, getting this critique as MANY times as possible becomes the whole point of art school. Of course, the connections are nice too.

So in a way, you are paying massive amounts of money just to meet an older artist that can give you great critique.

Knowing this, why are you complaining of the critique on an anonymous imageboard? Nobody here is paid to give you good critique, nobody knows if you just started posting here, nobody knows who you are and what youre trying to achieve, all we can infer is from the image file which you upload.

But the thing is, this thread is still very appropriate. This board is a 4chan board first, art critique board second. So troll shit like this belongs here.

To draw drapery, you are drawing drapery's interactions with other objects. Either that which it is lying upon or that which it is hanging upon.

To draw drapery, you must learn to draw everything else first.

To draw drapery on a figure, you must first be able to draw the figure.

The thing with clothes is that I fear 99% of my drapery is just symbol drawing. And after studying references... it's even more advanced symbol drawing.
There were some resources here months ago and I learned for example that fabric folds in a zigzag pattern on the sleeves. There was some highly detailed explanation as to why that happens, but all I took from it was

And of course, if the fabric seems appropiate now I put that on all of my drawings to give the illusion of clothing. But I feel bad doing so because I know I didn't actually understand why that happens or what variations does it have.

And that happens with all other clothing/drapery. I just learn some patterns and reproduce them from memory. It may work for still images but the moment I have to draw them moving it'll show.
J do care about getting better but it's such a hassle, I'm just grinding even more anatomy and drawing people with jumpsuits.

You need to be able to draw first. As in, break down everything you want to draw into three dimensional FORMs and then place the drapery / clothing on those.
The first part is the hard part. After that you just need to familiarize yourself with the seven basic folds (pic related) and learn how to apply them where appropriate.

None of them are symbols, though people who can't draw will think they are.
