No it's not retard. Low-opacity overlays are essentially a Rorschach test. You can never truly see how well things line up and your mind simply fills in the gap. With this kind of overlays, if the shapes are even just vaguely close enough, you can accuse pretty much anyone for tracing anything.

But with an opaque back-and-forth transition, there's no longer any wiggle room for error. How well things line up can be perfectly measured with complete certainty. And with that, you can tell for sure whether or not the person actually traced, and just how much he did it. But it's a shame that most people don't bother using this method
