I'm really trying to make it into the pro oil art real. Tell me how to improve and then lets come up with some strategies on how to sell the stuff in the market place

I like what you've got. Good basic color dichotomy, it has some depth. Get some lube.

The eyes are uneven, the planes of the face are uneven and poorly blocked in. You need to work on better warms and cools for the shadows and tighter brushstrokes that represent the form, your blocks of value aren't accurate enough. I like that you pushed the values, but your shadows are more saturated than your midtones and there's too much highlight, which completely washes out the shapes, especially on the forehead and you lose the slope back into the hairline where it looks flat.

I personally hate when I can tell which pigments you used, and the burnt sienna and ultramarine/iron blue straight out of the tube overpowers the subtle neutrals of the face. The beard is an afterthought.

Look at more Sargent, his teacher Carolus Duran, and their spirit guide, Velazquez. Work on more subtle and refined styling and pull back into impressionism from there. You'll pick up more fundamentals, color theory, and rendering tricks. You aren't ready for the art fair yet.

you didnt have the patience to draw and tile it appropriately. go back to burnt umber underpainting for now and keep working hard (and smart)

I like it. What you should do is select the things that are mistakes and then make like 15 more paintings about those mistakes. Granted I'm like the worst person to listen to if you're trying to look appealing.

Obviously this is CG but I approached this as I would oil.

Don't forget why oil is revered as a medium. It has a lot of natural character, but its greatest asset is how opaque it can be. That allowed artists to paint over and create very clean edges, small details, and hide the beginning or the tail of strokes.

Use a smaller brush at some point and do some detail work. Tighten things up. Even in impressionistic pieces, there is a balance between hard and soft. You can't really get away with sloppiness across the entire painting like this in portraiture.

I specifically avoided the quagmire of color theory. I don't think most people are qualified to talk about it, especially not artists. All I feel comfortable saying is that it's earned mixing paints and working in the field. Everything else is speculation.

Mixing paints because they have natural curves that support the work. You find the same tricks everyone before 1880 did working with a limited palette. Quickly. Working out cohesive color temperature is so much easier when your gamut is limited to 4 colors of rust and some crushed lapis, and your lighting is limited to daylight, overcast daylight and candles. You also learn how to imply rather than represent color.

Working in the field because that's where color harmony is. It's not in photographs. This one looks like shit. I'm drunk and it's a beautiful day, this is not it. It's not where balancing the experience with the paint available is. It's out watching the Whole interact with itself in mysterious ways and trying to put paint down or at least fuck with shutter speed. It's hard to beat the cohesion of nature unless you've fucked with trying to capture it first. Never underestimate how much time a good painter spends out in the field or on location.

This is why you don't hear about color theory, which isn't even the right term, it's nebulous and situational. There is no formula. Most of the people here are absolute beginners and the rest don't want to argue about it. The ones who know aren't even good at describing it. Do the work and maybe you'll reap the rewards.
