>>3628983
By not being colored at all. Black and white comics tend to be easier on the eyes and look better in general. But if you want to make a good cover, or if you absolutely have to use color for whatever reason, Japanese artists are way better at that than western comic book artists. They often use non-digital coloring methods like copics and watercolors. And if they use digital, it tends to look more tasteful. Pic related. No idea if it's digitally colored or not but it's very pleasing to the eye. Murata's coloring is very organic-looking. Western cape comics have this flat, sterile, over-saturated coloring that looks terrible. Everything doesn't need a fucking gradient fill. Mix it up for a change.

>good, intricate pencilwork

you're not just confusing the pencil shading with detail? he drew it with the values in mind (see the half-outlined belt gadgets) so I don' see that anything was lost.

the spiderman picture has more specular highlights to outline some anatomy. it's easy because the wide angle makes his ankle like 50% of your attention. in the OP the composition is more original, there's more going on in the scene to the left and the outline of the cape and batman logo is conspicuously empty space.

Love Mignola.

I read much fewer comics than I used to when I was a kid and what I like now is originality (largely because I got bored of the same cape stories over and over).

So people like Moebius, Geof Darrow, Seth Fisher.

Esad Ribic drew a phenomenal Namor mini-series that had nothing to do with the actual character and he was amazing at conveying a spooky almost Lovecraftian atmosphere

I truly believe Simon Bisley occasionally channels the same gods that possessed Frazetta, in and amongst the schlock is a artist to rival Klimt and almost as powerful and good with shapes as Leyendecker, all within the Chad 2000AD Comics, the same British malaise that created the best bits of warhammer 40k.

I like Bisley. I highly recommend Frazetta fans to look at Slaine: the Horned God, especially books 2 & 3, some of his purest work and where he cut his teeth.

Neal Adams legit raised the bar.

Before him comic books were for comic strip rejects. Strips were where the real illustrators worked, comic books were junk.

Neal Adams changed all that. Even still, he left the industry in the late 70s because he was so much better technically that rates hadn't kept up, and he could make more money through advertising.
