I actually know fuck all about who he was as a person or how well received his work was back in the day, but I want to know just how influential was this guy exactly? Was he considered a pioneer of the time?

Also, Moebius general.

Based Moebius-poster

He was super influential, did work on Alien, Tron, Willow. Along with Chris Foss and HR Giger he workd on the original Dune movie that never got made but basically became the blueprint for Star Wars. The Fifth Element is supposedly pretty much an adaptation of the Incal but I've never seen it.

Try to pick up his comics if you can- the art is phenomenal even if the writing passable at best and trash at worst.

Giraud came from an academic background, both in art and then comics, the opposite of Druillet who was self-taught and very free in his compositions and colors, notably. They founded Métal Hurlant together with Jean-Pierre Dionnet, who for our interest I'll describe as not a graphic artist. You can as easily see in Druillet's art improvments in fundamentals over those years

A lot of the people on these boards should go find the torrents of the complete Heavy Metal magazine runs, and read them all. Druillet, Mobius, Bilal, Caza, all the greats contributed to it. It's just fucking awesome stuff, and most of it is the foundation for later graphic novels and animation.
The rar I found is like 30 gigs, which is smaller than some games these days. Worth the time to find - be careful not to get the old ones, that are jpgs, find the comic book app format ones.
I'm aging myself, but I bought a lot of them new, as actual magazines. Wish I had kept them.

Once he hit his stride in the late 70's/early 80's and started cranking out the weird cross-hatched sci-fi stuff like La Deviation and The Airtight Garage, his influence was massive. Globally massive. Even if the average pleb on the street didn't know who he was, they were likely consuming output from artists who did. In Japan you can see his profound influence on an entire generation of creators, including Miyazaki, Makoto Kobayashi (the mech designer, not the What's Michael? creator), Katuya Terada, Katsuhiro Otomo and many more. In the West, his influence permeated into comics via Heavy Metal - ultimately concluding with him drawing a Silver Surfer comic for Stan Lee that's famously referenced in the film Crimson Tide when two Navy officers get into a fight over who drew the better Silver Surfer, Moebius or Jack Kirby - and then into films when he was hired for Jodorowsky's abortive Dune project, followed Alien, Tron, Willow, Masters of the Universe, and many other projects. Work he'd go on to create with Jodorowsky like The Incal then in turn inspired another generation of creativity and led to films like The Fifth Element. He also inspired many people in the current crop of digital/concept/entertainment artists, including the likes of Alexander "Zedig" Diboine.

If you want to know what kind of a man he was, look no further than this amazing documentary shot a few years before his death:

I appreciate his work, but I'm also a bit bored by it. I feel like he's at his best working under a writer, where his surreal imagery has more symbolic weight and the scenes are given a purpose. His standalone illustrations are too floaty and look like getting high and listening to prog rock sounds. Not knocking his skill and influence, it's just a thought I've had for a long time

I definitely understand, anon. For me though, his art holds a ton of weight despite being "floaty". I can't think of many other artists that managed to capture this kind of raw essence of beauty like Moebius did. Its like the guy was drunk off the tap of nature itself. Dunno. I just really enjoy art that has that fiery psychedelic feeling and Moebius did it better than anyone imo.

I don't think his massive influence is to be told from "cranking out the weird cross-hatched sci-fi stuff". He was successful at the international because he was an open man, rarely refusing projects. The Airtight Garage is more surrealist than sci-fi, much like La Déviation is fantastic. Also, his most influencial work, Arzach, was done in this style, just colorized.
And I find it a little insulting to make his Heavy Metal work ultimately concluding with making a comic with Stan Lee
At least the post is articulated, is that it ?

Feels like you didn't really understand what I was trying to convey. Everyone in Europe loved Blueberry, but it was the completely surreal sci-fi stuff that got him worldwide attention and you can see evidence of that in how it's the period/style of his work that's most often mimicked. You also seem to have completely missed the point of what I was getting at with the Americanised release of Heavy Metal bringing him to US attention, specifically that it was the collaboration with Stan Lee on a Silver Surfer comic for Marvel that bought his work to the widest possible audience. I wasn't making any kind of comment on relative quality, simply pointing out what had the farthest reach. As much as I love Arzach, that's the thing people like James Cameron found later, after initial exposure to his more mainstream (outside of Europe) output.

>> No.3629617

He was notoriously fast. The Incal was allegedly created in a weekend, with Jodorowsky dictating panels over Moebius's shoulder. He then cleaned up and inked the artwork, and a legendary comic was born. Apparently they used the same process earlier for the Dune storyboards, Moebius would draw at a furious pace while Jodorowsky narrated the story to him.

Tthat's also my point, the silver surfer comic is not what had the farthest reach, and even if wide, I doubt the widest. Getting to do a comic with Stan Lee made his popularity boom in the States more than anywhere else in the world. Arzach, on the other hand is still the most cited, referenced, copied influence amongst comic lovers. Arzach stood the test of time

not the anon comparing him to Moebius, but W McCay was arguably one of the most important pioneers of comic illustration and the fantasy genre. He also made some of the first animations that were getting close to what Walt Disney would improve on later. Comparing the two is silly, but I would say that Moebius definitely had a look at McCays work. It's a bit speculative, but he might have even drawn a fair amount of inspiration from his coloring, his bird eye perspective drawings and some of the characters and creatures. Look at the tribal folks in those pics. McCays body of work is enourmous.
And yes, it has a lot of charm. Just a different one. I would say that Moebius' worlds that he created and the respective inhabitants is a more lonely, more mature space, while McCay is of course more aimed at children and dreams.
