Any tips on working with digital screentones?
I actually really like the look it produces when done well but they're pretty awkward to work with and easily end up looking like crap.

One thing I found is that working on a large canvas (B5, B6) makes them look much less harsh

people who are going straight to print can get away with using digital tones safely, because they dont have to worry about the weird effects of digital once its in physical form. theres no screen to distort the "pixels". does that make sense?

you can only avoid shit looking screentones in digital by using scanned in tones.

I think you just have to work with an xboxhueg canvas
pic related is obviously digital screen tones AND not scanned, but the screen tone doesn't do weird shit even if you start zooming in/out

Use different ones for different textures (circle, lines, cross etc)
Never blend two different screentones, its just going to look unnatural and shit

Screentones are designed for monochrome offset printing. Don't bother unless you intend to print.

If you absolutely insist on using them in your online images, convert them to greyscale first.
