What drawing exercises, tutorials and books would you all recommend for learning construction, structure and getting better at drawing from imagination.

>> No.3617042

literally just read the sticky.

there is no substitute for practice and learning the fundamentals.

I've already read it. Construction IS a fundamental. The big sticky really doesn't go into much depth as to what exactly you need to do to get better at construction.

have you read any of the books then, or utilised any of the general resources? i've made the mistake of just skimming through text without actually trying to understand.

you should also put in the effort to physically draw things you haven't seen before. take a hint from krenz and apply construction to your references.

Yea, I've been doing the draw a box exercises and studying loomis a bit. Here's my construction work from today. I'm really shit at perspective so i gotta study more draw a box.

you still have a very limited understanding of perspective, so just focus on that before anything else.
emulating photos and doing still-lives will eventually give you an intuitive grasp of perspective.

I'm not really sure, because I did this yesterday which is a perspective exercise and I'd say it's decent. I just really suck ass at visualizing things.

I also have some portrait drawings. I do have still lifes as well. I dunno, maybe if I keep hammering away at copying I'll get better at imagining things, but I'm not sure.

frankly, it's not. you're ignoring basic principles in drawing fisheye perspective -- note how most sides of the green box are actually curved.

i've also given an example of how to construct bottles. Note that no matter how you view a circle in perspective, it will always be equivalent to an ellipse angled in some arbitrary way. that's one of the situations where you must intuit perspective.

>>3617059
it isn't bad, but you would still benefit from a thorough understanding of how to break the face up into simple, intersecting forms. the lips and nose aren't believable.

I mean yea, that's what construction is, and it's what I'm weak at. I really don't know how to break down the body into simple shapes. I often find it just interrupts with me being able to accurately draw the photo.

I'm obviously still going to copy from photographs, just because it trains my eyes, but my ultimate goal is to learn how to draw from imagination, which is why I did those exercises above.

That's what anatomy books are for.

Also, you don't necessarily need to draw construction lines when working from memory. Construction w/ ref is just an effective way to learn forms.

Since you like photos so much just use a grid to train your eyes to see what's in front of you.

Or for construction you can study forms perspective and anatomy. Look up anatomy for sculptors and draw everything in that book from the skeleton up.

Sounds good, I'll look up that book. Thanks.

No problem. I think you can find a pdf in the art book thread by the way
