How'd you do it. I can tell my brain is still trying to draw something flat on paper.

Not OP, but it really isn't that hard for me. Just try to practice this exercise while you observing the world around you. You don't even need to draw at the time. Basically pic related but from right to left.

Guess it's just good old measuring and figuring out angles for us then buddy :(

Hey a question for you though do you have dreams or no? My mind's eye is there just enough to let me have dreams (but still zero visualization when awake) but I never remember them in the morning.

Hey friends, you could try out simple low polygonal modelling and then work on visualizing those same shapes in your head. I don't know if it would help you, but modelling really strengthened my visualization abilities after a while.

>> No.3615561

>>3615548
No you misunderstand it's a neurological condition that makes you physically unable to visualize. I don't understand your advice past "draw low poly models".

My whole life I have only ever thought in vague concepts. Never had issue with symbol drawing vs drawing what I see though because I don't keep visual symbols in my head. If someone tells a story about walking in on their grandma naked I don't "see" anything as you normal people do.

Always blank. No visuals. No "voice" for my thoughts. Can't imagine anything. Can't have a visual library even though I understand what it's supposed to be I guess.

Sucks.

That's sad man. I have these super vivid dreams where I fly through these worlds and lots of random stuff happens
>run down a steep cliff
>getting chased by two black dogs from the castle above
>there's mist everywhere
>next second I'm in a flat grassland
>a pretty lady in white appears through the mist and kisses me
>walk further and now I'm surrounded by marsh
>run madly and start flying
>it's night now
>see a light far off and fly towards it
>girl with a lantern in a country lane
>she scolds me for something
>dream ends

I can only "visualize" vague glimpses of whatever I'm supposed to be thinking of. I can't draw faces from memory whatsoever. I'll rarely have perfectly vivid dreams but voluntarily picturing something in my mind's eye is like squinting my eyes in the dusk.
My goal involves lots of drawing from imagination. Is there hope for development here or is it laughable that I'm even attempting it?

>> No.3615687

>>3615561
Sorry anon. Maybe this is a stupid question, but if you try REALLY hard, anything? Or just all black, all the time? I know it sucks, but maybe it could be even more inspiration for you to create visual art.

If I understand you correctly, you could make it if you drew heavily from refs

I meant is there any evidence that you can develop mental visualization, since my end goal is primarily drawing from imagination without refs.

I believe your visualization skills just need practice but it's not entirely gone. How do you think of what to draw if you can't picture anything in your head? If I tell you to think of a pink elephant, can you imagine something of that sort?

All black all the time, baby.

It's all good man I don't know a life with visualization so living without it just means I have to study even harder and construct everything in proper perspective, and really grind out my fundies. That's how it always has been.

Until I was 24 I thought that things like "Oh I just can't imagine what that's like!" were just sayings. NOPE yall weird fuckers are really seeing pictures in your heads. I felt like an idiot lol

Some day I'm gonna be a master artist trust me I'm gonna make it guys.

>>3615699
I can think in concepts only. If you tell me pink elephant I do not imagine anything no matter how hard I try. However I know what an elephant is conceptually. I might start thinking about what facts I know about elephants at best. I know what the color pink is. Just no imagining. Only recognizing things.

However I could google an elephant and figure out what forms it's made of, use visual measuring to figure out their proportions, reconstruct the elephant in perspective with the pose I want, use perspective to find my light source and shadows, and then use knowledge of how value and color work to paint it pink.

When I sketch something I don't know what I'm doing when I start, I just scribble around and follow the forms and gesture until I find something that's fun. I can do realism just fine though, never had issue with that, it's just boring subjects. I can build muscle memory for technique...

I think that's probably more work than most of you guys would have to put into stuff like that, though.

It's a part of your brain that can range from non-funtioning (no visualization, no dreams) to semi-functioning (no / limited visualization, limited dreams) to insane mode (visualization more real than real life, vivid lucid dreams every night, rotate objects 360 degrees and feel like you can touch them). You can try developing it, depends on how bad it is for you.

Grind fundies and they'll lead the way to your end goal. It's a rough path ahead of us, anon. You have to get the hang of all of them and then if you're creative with it you can figure out how to do anything. You're probably going to go through concept artist process for imagination stuff more than anything though.

I downloaded the book The Skillful Huntsman and it gives some good insight on the process. You just doodle a whole lot of variations of something and pick what silhouette looks good. Then after that you can play with different colors and designs on things it's really fun and I think it accomplishes basically what people do in their heads. Just slower. But hell the result is gonna be so good every time dude

I'm not sure if this can be applied to your case but in meditation, when one has trouble visualizing with the mind, it's advised to visualize through other senses of the body.
Let's say meditate by visualizing yourself in a beach. Instead of imagining a beach, try thinking of what it feels like to be in a beach, what it smells like, the sound of the waves and the feeling of sand on your feet. Think of what emotions you can evoke when you're on a beach, stuff like that. I figured you can apply these things when you're about to do some creative work

No the thought of a beach brings nothing to my mind. Just thinking about what elements make a beach and what things live there and stuff. Purely concepts bro.
