I don't think he's got a lotta value as a concept artist. What corporations has he done concepts for? Feng Zhu has an appealing style and he has done loads of work for projects. Ruan's stuff cannot be easily interpreted for anything, whereas Feng Zhu can be given the idea 'people riding tortoises' and come up with both the base art and details designed to lend authenticity to the idea.

concept art is just pretty pictures. things that catch the eye and develop a pre-developed ide further-- think of the stuff you seen in production still from animated films and whatnot.

an illustration is an image that tells a complete story (or part of one). it has the elements of a visual narrative: character, theme, atmosphere, props, setting, conflict. look at the works of norman rockwell for example--almost all of his paintings, while also technically marvelous, also tell little stories within themselves.

RJ makes concept art with the intention of selling it like an illustration. that's why people have a beef with his art.

First of all, concept art and illustration are not conceptually different, they are just positions in the industry, Does your work will be used as a final piece to illustrate someting? then it's illustration. Does you work will be used as a reference to create part a movie or a videogame? Then it's concept art.
Of course concept art tells a story, telling a story through the design is the whole fucking point. If anything, iin illustration is where is more important to make things look "pretty".
An Illustration of a character in front view is still an illustration, and concept art that depicts a whole scene with a high level of polish is still concept art.
