god, tumblr-style comics move sooo SLOOOOW. it should be a crime to have TEN panels on a page and still get so little done to progress the story. why is this issue so common among "popular" titles i find on hiveworks and tapastic? especially when they only update once or twice a week?? are they just milking their audience for money by keeping the comic going for as long as possible?

to keep the thread on-topic, for every complaint i post about shitty comics, i'll recommend a good one.

these comics are all exposition and no payoff.
for example- look at this page. they cut her long, beautiful hair- a huge focal point of her character- and there's no MONEY SHOT. they just move on. i checked the next few pages just to be sure. they don't show off their characters, backgrounds, or other misc objects. even during big scenes, the panels stay tiny. there's almost no variation.

boring
boring
BORING

look at the page i put next to this garbage for comparison. character cuts her hair- a big deal for just about any girl in a comic- and bam! we get a panel taking up half the page showing off her new look. readers eat this up, so why did the comic on the left skip this? as far as i know, artists love drawing these kind of scenes too. it's not like it's a huge inconvenience. i really can't understand why tumblr artists go out of their way to be bland.

Obviously >>3608073 is trying to achieve some kind of fairy tale kind of mood in these panels. That's why the panels are so understated and the font is serif. Only there's no atmosphere and no mystery in these panels, so it just kinda falls flat. Luckily Japan has such a strong culture of manga that even the biggest amateur knows the visual language instinctively.

I think what (s)he should try to achieve is pic related

>> No.3611238

A LOT of western comics make this mistake, I've noticed. Instead of being expressive and dynamic with how panels are shot and drawn, they opt for flat, boring shots over and over. It's like looking at the events of the story live through a little screen or something.

they want to make something feel cosy and homey and atmospheric, but can't figure out how to do that without killing the pacing. it's a valid goal/problem.

It's okay to try, so you understand how they work I guess, but AFAIK most people today end up doing some digital editing at some point anyway.

Personally I like doing the line art and filling the blacks on paper, then scan it and add the notes and speech bubbles digitally.
Real screentones are sadly not that common and cheap outside of Japan, so to me it seems not worth it.

>> No.3622343

So I recently looked up some posts I did around the time I cancelled my comic, and realized my problems are still the same. I'll copy paste a bit of it here:

"For me, this is the process of making a page:

-Draw the thumbnail over and over;
-Sketch several poses for the page;
(That's the end of the actual "drawing"part, now let's do the comic page)
-The sketches look awful but you're already taking too long, so screw it;
-Get bored while doing the lineart, re-do the lineart for a character that ended up too big;
-color the characters (my favorite part)
-Try to squeeze in some speech balloons, the text ends up too small;
-Improvise a couple backgrounds;
-Experiment with shading, end up doing a different shading style than the previous page;

During the time that I'm doing the page, I don't get to improve my art, and end up forgetting how to draw, since I took a month to do that comic page."

Any way to fix those issues?

>> No.3622391

>>3622343
It may seem like a very vague answer, but just don't worry so much about the quality of the drawing at the moment. Comics are a narration, not an illustration. Focus on seeing that you really transmit what you want with those previous sketches before you even start making the lineart. Besides, it's a good idea to have several pages already thought in advance so that you don't martyr yourself thinking that you could have put this in place of the other. There are several books that can help you with the language of comics, ask in the thread of artbooks

Then you could practice keeping a similarity between all the vignettes and the pages, obviously thinking in advance how you would like it to look like. Although I'm assuming that you already have some drawing knowledge, that's why I don't go into that in depth. I hope I have helped you even a little.

this is what i do. other people might have better ways though.

-draw thumbnails for all the pages in the chapter. include where the speech bubbles go. add text in to know if they're the right size.
-sketches
-then do lineart. finalise the speech bubbles/text
-repeat for all pages in the chapter
-decide the colours for the pages
-colour the pages
-shade
-never look at again

You have, people let go of screentones more and more since they made coloring muddy or you needed someone good to be able to handle the coloring job well. Howard Chaykin and I believe Wally Wood were the last major artists to work with screentons, or the special Duotone Illustration boards in Chaykin's case. Duotone was special since you didn't need to layer screentones on it, just wipe or lather a special fluid over the boards to activate one of two screentones. Good shit.

What's the consensus on monologuing at the start of a comic? Before you actually start the story. It could use a character as the mouth piece, perhaps in a scene which comes up later. But in general is it too on the nose?

depends on how smart you are with it, and if it goes with the style or genre of story.

Yeah, I'm working on it, at its current moment it says a lot about the character and most definitely fits in to the setting. May be cliche, but it'll be about the mask everyone puts on to fit in. I'll be showing this somewhat through royalty and the upper class in times before guns. Hoping an element of this character gives the clichéd concept a little zest though.

I understand in theory that certain layouts lend to certain things, but how do you map this stuff out when drawing a comic? How do you know how to set up sequential scenes and how much weight each one should have or the focus?

Lookup the original One punch man webcomic by ONE (not Murata) if you've never seen it.
Guy's drawing are 14 year old level but it still works. As long as you're not going for a genre or tone that requires super realistic and the rest is ok, panelling, story, dialog, rythm etc etc, it can work.

Normies can't see how good he is. They just remember those one lazy prepublication pages. But Togashi actually tries things (as opposite to being those "nice and clean" but formulaic shonen artists), is very dynamic. Just look at the variety and detail in all those secondary characters (he creates a fuckton and some appear for one panel but he still puts efforts in it instead of samefacing)

tl;dr love the guy but I just wish he stopped packing his manga with so much text. He's so good at visual narrative and he's crippling HxH with all the over explanation. I know HxH was always kinda like this but he should balance it better.

I do, yes.
I'm unsure if it's just an analyzing thread, but I think it's appropriate to at least give Anons the option to critique another user's work, as well. I posted this in the drawthread, but to briefly explain,

Things I've been addressing since this page:
>the flatness of the perspective
>any "jank" in anatomical structure, beyond what the art style permits
>the imbalanced linework, leading to messier compositions and distinguishing "grounds" (foreground, etc)

I've already gone through most of the lessons in Hampton's, supplementing it with Anatomy for Sculptors. If you have any recommendations on resources to improve the style, please let me know. Even just posting a picture and saying "like this" is more than enough, as I'm willing to do style studies, as well.

Thank you.

I'd think so. You should watch his Urasawa Naoki no Manben episode; he takes photos of his own, turns em monochrome, removes the midtones, and then prints em out in order to add more detail before layering characters on top

Your pencil should be able to stand on its own. Make sure it's sharp and a hard pencil. A lot of "atmosphere" is also out of practicality of being able to draw more pages quicker by simplifying the background details. You need to learn different ways to render texture/material and use black or white as though you're inking. Planning the floorplan or blueprint of the area you're going to draw will go a long way with camera angles you can set up and different light sources you can try.
