IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

You're such a beginner, you wouldn't get any use out of a formal teacher.
Kinda like a couch-potato buying a gym membership and hiring a personal trainer without being able to do a single sit-up first.
Read "drawing on the right side of the brain" ignore the pseudo-scientific bullshit and focus on the excercises, also keep drawing a lot to develope your judgement and hand-eye coordination.

The face is too long and the mouth being that low in comparison to the nose makes it look like they have fetal alcohol syndrome. On top of that, the grain of the hair should be perpendicular to the parted part in the middle. The handle on the Mosin is too short and the stock is too wide, the gun looks like it's at a straight on angle but despite that, you can still see the hole in the barrel for some reason? also, in general, put more detail into your work, parts of this especially the dress come off as looking a bit lazy.

There's a lot of blank space on the face and it feels like a waste just to represent the mouth and nose with just two lines, be more detailed with it.

Constructive criticism.

When people are legitimately giving advice or critique, they don't go around saying how much of failure you are or how "shit" "crap" etc the person is.
They tell you how to improve instead of saying all that.

This guy starts these threads every time the last comes to it's end so he can pretend to be multiple people pretending to be hating on any practice drawings being posted to stop you from continuing to get better at drawing.

If someone is not giving constructive criticism then there is no point even taking on board what they are saying because they are only doing it to make you give up.

>> No.3598678

Maybe learn fucking fundamentals? If you have to have everything perfect put paper above the screen and trace it, you don't even have to use brain for anything but to follow the line.

Drawing does not mean magically putting shit from your head on the paper, but understanding it's shape, perspective, lighting, perception, size, place, structure... Many of the people that are actually good and leave good drawing are not masters in many of those areas, but they keep trying, they know they will fail, they know how to take failure, they failed more times than you tried, but they keep going in the infinite pursuit of perfection.

What even is your end goal? To open a patreon and earn thousands of dollars drawing porn? It may sound nice but you are going to have to put in the effort, even if you cut corners and don't want to learn anatomy, proportions and perspective, you have to put a lot of effort into hiding the lack of fundamentals.

So if you are not ready to put in the consecutive effort, stop.

I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this. I wanna draw like the art on the right, to the point where I can draw like that every time, reasoning being that I feel like I have no motive to do anything but attempt to copy things exactly from reference and study which wears me down and I feel like if I could draw in-between all the referenced drawing and studying I'd get in a lot of consistency.

The drawing is a one-off tumblr request, their other art seems entirely different and I don't even follow the artist so I can't really spam copy their drawings to get an idea of it that way.

If any of that makes sense, can someone help me?

I want to be well rounded, but mostly focus on stuff that could help me make a webcomic or something one day that doesn't look like ass. I tried writefagging before but I feel like I have more skill for drawfagging (even if rn its shit).

I'm a weeb with a boner with everything between 1975 and 1999 but I also enjoy a lot of /co/ stuff. I know that to get to the point where I can draw competently in style similar to those I need to focus a lot on real life stuff. Even if it takes 5-10 years I'm ok with that, I just feel like right now I'm not being productive with my practice time. I also feel that since I lack someone that not only critiques my work, but points me in the right direction (which is a big part of why I'm browsing /ic/ more) I stunt my progress.

in short, I want to get to the point where I can draw highly stylized stuff reminiscent of late 70s to late 90s anime and also draw objects and characters that I like as well as my own original creations.

He gives you what he wants without too many details. He uses a wider colour spectrum than Inoue, and he does it well. I also appreciate his sense of depth.

>Kentaro Miura
He reached the "sweet spot" right before she moved to digital art. His style is (or at least used to be) obsessively detailed (which is great, but I consider it a 'con' if you have to look for 10 seconds to understand what is going on in the scene).

how do I learn to shade correctly

I'm improving at construction and copying shading from reference images, but I can't wrap my head around shading.

Do I assume there's a light source at some point in space in reference to the image, and if the contour/plane is perpendicular to the source, its lightly shaded, if its opposite to the light source, its darkly shaded, and if its facing the light source directly, it provides a reflection? Am I getting this right?

Total beginner here. I'm totally frustrated and could us some direction/motivation/tips

I've been following draw a box. The first lesson went well and I felt progression. My lines feel a lot more confidant and directed.

I noticed my first issue with drawing boxes. I don't feel like I'm doing it intuitively. I can't 'picture' the box naturally. I can draw a decent box but I have to sit there, line up my pen and place dots where it would makes sense for the vanishing points to be and then draw everything. It's taking me several minutes per box. I feel like I'm just going through a step by step process and not actually doing anything

I started lesson two and tried the natural shapes exercise where you draw ellipsis around a sausage to demonstrate 3d understanding. This is where I got frustrated. I don't see it. I can't process the image as 3d. All I can do is try to replicate what I see others doing but I can't intuitively sense the 3d shape on my own. It doesn't click

I've waisted a good 4th of a sketchbook trying this exercise and I'm literally near tears. I feel like my brain is broken

Take a break, but while you're going about your day look around and imagine how you'd draw certain things around you irl. Imagine how they'd look in perspective, but not as they are, instead break them down in to spheres, cylinders and boxes in your head. You'll get better at it the more you visualise this, from there, you then draw the sausages and try to imagine the lines that would represent the 2D image as a 3D object in perspective, that will give it form.

Have a quick read of hampton's figure drawing, but also pic related is an artist who renders using perspective lines, Villarrte. These are the lines you want to be able to imagine to give form to a 2D object easier.

One VERY IMPORTANT thing to note that most shit people here don't tell you when you're trying to study drawing with books/video tutorials (an example from my experience: Vilppu's drawing manual that has 12 skills/techniques to drawing) is that you never finish the skill and move on! you just put a certain amount of hours and MOVE ON..

This was the biggest mistake I did with drawing, I stayed on skill one gesture drawing for over 50 hours without much improvement, the moment I quit & went ahead to skill #two (drawing spherical forms) my skills jumped and I saw immediate improvement in my gesture drawing! and so I decided I should put a set amount of study for each section (I put 10-hours/skill)

My tip to you is put a set amount of time for each chapter in Loomis's book, for example 15 hours for each chapter that includes reading the chapter! (That will keep your study fresh with a sense of progression).. even if you don't fully master one chapter you should move to the next chapter when the time is up, the next chapter will give you the boost you need to master the previous chapter later on when you return to it..

After that start restudying the book (or change the book to add fun to your study time)..
The restudying shouldn't take more than half your studying time..
