How do you prevent falling for optical illusions when drawing from reference?

Measure and compare. Your brain can't help but fall for optical illusions, so only strict measurement and reference poonts can help.

Depth perception can sometimes screw up your hand when drawing, so I've found it pretty effective to put paper over one of your eyes/close one eye when drawing.

I wonder how much of an issue optical illusions are for artists. My guess is that it isn’t that big of an issue.

it isnt, also that pic is not an optical illusion for many obvious reasons, especially since it deals with how we see greys, aka like the striped tiles and cylnder model. literally just need a trained eye

what is the illusion meant to be? is it just a blue/yellow shirt meme?

it doesn't matter if you fall for them or not, with colour matching normally you get the right colour you just might think you're painting yellow when it's really grey, with optical effects if you painting it bendy it still looks the same as if you painted it straight.

in the square, the left "black" is actually the same color as the right "yellow"
and the left "blue" is actually the same color as the right "white"
people thought the dress looked white and gold because their brains somehow didnt account for the yellow sunlight

it was because the white balance of the picture was blown out and it made it hard for brains to tell whether or not it's silhouetted, some people's brains say it's in shadow so it's white and gold, some say it's in the light so it's black and blue. you can, or i can at least, switch between the two paradigms just by telling myself it's either in light or shadow.
