Using a fat ass is a bad reference.
It is better to use detailed references like faces and all the folds in the clothing in my pic.
This way you can play around with the proportions and everything way better and create your own version out of it.

>> No.3596556

>>3594008
I've heard it explain as needing 3 changes from the original to avoid copyright. So changing the out fit hair and setting is all you would need to do. not to mention the expensive of copyright cases makes it a no win situation.

>> No.3597660

>>3593448
an easy solution is to merely copy the proportions/pose, and use the original picture as a shading reference. The line work ends up being your own, as does the shading and colorscheme, and character design.
See, if you look at the following examples
>>3593819
This one doesn't actually trace anything. You can tell mostly because the one on the right is pretty poor compared to the one on the left, but also the white haired girls ass is at a totally different angle,
compared to
>>3593825 by the same artist, you can tell in this piece that the hand was directly traced, as well as the cup, straw, eyes nose and mouth. However, the shading is so different that you could at least give them credit there.

Lastly
>>3593827
is probably the artists worst offender, even though the coloring is all on their own. That's because details like the individual lines on the skirt are even copied, as well as the exact curvature of the breasts.

Ideally you want something closer to >>3593821
Where literally the only thing lifted is the pose. And if you think about it, that's what life drawing IS, so it's not much of a difference.

it's 30% for copyright
trademark is a different issue.
Mickey Mouse is trademarked, for instance. That means you can't draw mickey mouse in a different style and claim it as your own because the design is trademarked.
Most character designs are copyrighted but not trademarked. I.E. the exact image is protected, but something that's close to that image but significantly different is fine.
For instance, adult Gohan, if made by someone other than toriyama, could be a trademark infringement since it's so similar to Goku (if Goku is trademarked) but not a copyright violation unless he's drawn in the same pose, with the same linework as Goku.

according to /ic/, 100%, plus the whole pose, proportions and lighting, otherwise you're a tracing hack

irl, just until you're happy with the results. if you paste some figure in your canvas and you feel it works with your composition, then you're golden

using popular copyrighted pictures in commercial stuff sounds like a bad idea. if you're asking what constitutes fair use in some particular territory, this is not the right place to get a sensible answer

Photo outlines are different than tracing drawings. But the more of it you made yourself the better IMO. it mostly doesn’t matter to anyone who can’t/don’t make art. Shortcuts have been used since art was created. Disney traces,a few comic artist trace. manga is known for using photo tracing for backgrounds. It’s just part of the process, but it’s up to the individual artist to decide what’s appropriate. The guy who made the obama “hope” portrait got sued by AP for googling and copying an image. So there’s a price to pay for taking advantage of tracing. The end result is what would you be more proud of? A traced outline with your own rendering, or a completely original piece from your mind onto the page/canvas?
I learned anatomy structure because I like to draw whatever I can think of, but if I’m having “artist block” I’ll find a reference and sketch my own version of the pose to build from. Tracing is something I avoid, because it’s not something I can be proud of.
If pride doesn’t matter then do whatever.
Nobody is the dictator of art, except for Hitler but he died in South America in the 60’s.

Plenty of people use 3d cg character renders to quickly get their perspective, proportions, poses, and lighting on point. If you only use the render of bare bones human models as essentially a custom reference image, I'd say its nearly 100% your own (so long as you are using a copyright free model... which their are plenty of).

>blender + manuel bastioni lab plugin
There is your starting point in anyone is interested in the technique. There are other options too, but those are both free (and more importantly renders of the plugin's models only require attributions to use).
