Make your lines beautiful

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

What pencil hardness do you prefer for drawing?
I've got a ton of HBs because they're easy to erase and I'm still practicing, but they feel kind of dull when shading.
I'd like to have deep blacks like you see in black-and-white cinema. Should I go with 2B or even darker? Is it normal to mix pencil types within the same drawing or is it best if I stick with one?

this looks like a good start but you really do need to read loomis, particularly his figure book and his head and hands book. i know everyone says it's a meme but it will help you draw realistic or semirealistic looking humans and make drawing them both from imagination and with a reference so much easier. learning construction of the human form is essential and makes drawing more fun because you'll feel more confident when you know what you're doing and where everything is supposed to go. but, overall, i'd say you're doing better than most /beg/s but proper construction will help you a lot.

Great questions!

The creature is called Gomot. He's an ancient mechanical construct built for defense and warfare by a long-deceased tribe. It's very sturdy and durable, able to survive for long periods of time on absolutely nothing. There exists a repurposed version of it built by a modern society based on the creature's blueprints (pic related). The modern version is not quite as durable given its material build and reliance on electricity, but it's capable of dishing out more brute force. The wings were kind of an afterthought and I admittedly just added em for the coolness factor - sorry.

>> No.3586437

>>3586430
Neato, it's always important to attach as much lore as possible when creating these sorts of things. Not only because it's cool to have lore, but because it'll help you cement your drawings into a reality.

As an onlooker, I don't see how this thing could fight at all, maybe using the drill on it's ass to charge you, or maybe swinging his head or some built in laser in it's eye. I also have to wonder if the drill serves a purpose outside of combat, maybe it is a re-purposed mining bot? The legs do seem useful for navigating mining shafts. Either way, one of my old friends who was a feverent writer told me that you must define it from the top.

Why does it exist?

Work from there and keep asking why to nuance the creature to your liking. He had an excel sheet with about 50 generic questions he would ask himself for just about anything he would include in his world that didn't exist in ours.

Your gesture drawings are shitty because you're not drawing the gesture, you're drawing the contour.
Theres not much else to say yet since you fundamentally don't seem to understand what gesture is about, which to be fair is a concept that is a bit abstract to grasp.
Read books and watch videos by: glenn vilppu, karl gnass, michael hampton.
Proko is also fine but his approach focuses a lot on accuracy instead of the feeling which makes it more difficult to grasp where the difference is between contour and gesture.

Anyway theres a hundred places that are far better resources for figures than loomis.
Especially concerning gesture.

really you don't need to work on anything specifically, you just need to draw more, and learn a bit on your own by getting comfortable and then experimenting

it's really not too bad, values are bit flat, drawing is a bit off, bit messy, too many lines etc. but it works pretty well, looks like a girls face, looks lit, details on the eyes work and brows work. so good work overall, just do it more.

As someone who just started aswell, Ive come across some guidelines that help me study.

Use as big a brush as you can get away with.
Hard edge brushes take priority over soft.
Transparency should only be used to blend colors.

Ive started with using references for color and shapes while making most of the scene from imagination. I dont know if this is an effective way to study, but it allows me to look at my work from a 3rd party perspective and see what simply looks bad instead of what looks wrong.

I mean, her leg is fucked because you don't understand the knee construction, but I'm more amused by her fingers coming straight out of her forearm without a visible wrist or palm.

Loomis will help you because you need to start thinking in terms of 3d planes and landmarks. For example, her head is pointing up, yet you drew her chin down, because you didn't consider the bottom plane of her chin could be visible (and aligned higher than her jaw). Since you use the chin and hairline as landmarks to place the facial features, and those landmarks are out of perspective, the entire perspective on your face makes no sense.

Proko's first videos are a good explanation of the Loomis head, complete with planes, landmarks, perspective changes, etc.

I'm not an expert by any means, but here's some pointers I think might help you.

Start by breaking the three-quarter head into front and side planes. This will help you determine where the eyes, and center of the face should be. Keep in mind the wider the side plane is (head more turned), the more compressed the front plane will become. A common mistake is to make both planes too wide - you have to remember if you see a lot of one, you'll see less of the other.

Once you have the side plane, you can carve a wedge out of the face to create the area for the eyes. This will generally create a distinct silhouette visible on the far profile of the face. (While the profile can vary, it's usually best to align the "in" dip (under the brow) with the length of the eyes, and have the "out" dip (cheeks) underneath.

When placing the eyes, you have to keep in mind they go *in* the face, not flat on it. The eyebrows, however, go above the chunk you've carved, on the brow line (duh), which means they are more forward than the eyes, and won't align straight with them in anything other than a straight-on view.

In three-quarter, the bridge of the nose will align with the continuation of the curve of the top eyelid, something you've done well here.

When doing stylized heads, you need to keep in mind your proportions, though vastly different from realistic heads, will tend to follow specific rules.

The amount of forehead to face ratio is ridiculous in anime characters, especially on young females. While we're used to the eyes being the midpoint of the head (the head, not the face), I find that in anime, the midpoint tends to be closer to the brow line.

Your eyes are just too big, and even if you're going for a style with big eyes, I would lower them considerably, so you can lower your brow line as well. The ear, obviously, will follow.

Once you have the general facial construction figured out, you can start adding more specific details.

The mouth, especially on younger characters, will sit lower than you would expect. Again, for adults, the general proportion rule is that it's located one third down from the bottom of the nose to the chin. In children, it's closer to being halfway down. This is something you've generally gotten well in your drawing as well.

The nose will have the typical "upturn" characteristic of cute characters. When the nose is very short and tiny, like in moe styles, it will sit fairly high, closer to the eyes. Keep in mind the apparent height of the nose relative to the eyes will change based on the up/down angle of the head.

On females, when not hidden by hair, the corner of the jaw can be softened or erased completely near the ear to show the softness of that area (this is something else your original drawing already has). In general, many lines can be softened or erased to show areas of fat, for example the bottom/center of the mouth being drawn with a lighter line to indicate the fullness of the bottom lip causing some overlap.

Hair is poofy. Like, really poofy. It doesn't just sit on the cranium, and while regular, realistic hair has some volume, anime hair has a LOT of volume. Like, when you combine the big-ass forehead with the volume of the hair, it's kinda insane to think about how far down on the head the eyes really are.

You generally want to simplify hair to a few big masses. I can see you've sorta done that, though you have some chickenscratch and extra unnecessary lines on the inside of the volumes muddying things a bit. Don't be afraid to look up anime hairstyles for reference, and pay attention to how the artist simplifies the hair into specific volumes.

Lastly, to answer this one, I think Loomis is a tool to teach you to think in terms of perspective, forms, and planes (at least, his beginner books are). Once you have a good notion of that, you can head right into stylizing characters however you want (whether it be anime or calarts or whatever you can think of). The basic rules of perspective, landmarks and planes will remain the same no matter what.

Glad to be of help. I think what helped me develop an understanding of anime faces the most was to study Loomis heads and basic face volumes/perspective, then go onto boorus and see what sort of consistencies I could find in the face among most artists.

Keep in mind some artists will do absolutely incorrect things, so you can't always rely on artistic interpretations, but generally, if it looks good, it's because it has followed specific rules.

If it doesn't seem consistent, it might be because you have not achieved full comprehension of the rule.

Cross-check your stylized knowledge with realistic fundamentals as much as possible. All stylized art is essentially an application of fundies.

Just realized I said something retarded, the curve of the bridge of the nose in three-quarter doesn't align with the top eyelid of the far eye, but with the outline of the far brow. Which isn't the same as the eye/eyelid. Or the same as the eyebrow.

But if you look at any picture or drawing in three-quarter, you should be able to see it fairly easily. The curve flows into the ridge of the eye socket, making a shape that looks like the number 2.

Actual eyebrows vary a lot, both in style/length, as well as position depending on the facial expression of the character. But the ridge of the eye socket is a bony landmark, meaning it won't change.

Main point is, I guess, it doesn't align with the far top eyelid or eyelashes. If anything, the extension of that curve should undershoot that of the nose.

You can't successfully imitate an artist if you don't have a basic understanding of what they're doing.

Imo, the most valuable way to do this is to first learn about the theory behind a concept, then look at how artists apply that theory. For example, learn about certain anatomical features, then look at how artists choose to represent them through their paintings or sculptures.

If I'm just doing a study, I mostly just look to see whether something is in light or shadow, and if I should make it cool or warm. I don't care about color accuracy to the study unless that's what I'm going for

/beg/ also doubles as /adv/, right? Will I be better off starting Loomis first or Perspective Made Easy? I semi-know (some) perspective with no real problem, shapes and things, anything like a room or landscape and I spill spaghetti everywhere, I just know what's right or wrong (shape related) because I practiced them an autistic amount years ago. I couldn't tell you exactly why or how it works, I just know when it works and when it doesn't.
Drawing people is where I really want to improve, but I tried Loomis once before and memed myself with the angles. For example when you draw the face from top down or bottom up, they just looked like I had drew them front on, but they ended up with big foreheads or big chins, then I got pissed off and took a break from it.
What I'm thinking is, because I "know" perspective better than faces/anatomy, I should be able to work through Perspective Made Easy a lot quicker and I won't have that hanging over me. I have a lot of books to go through, but the more I have the more daunting it seems. Therefore my logic is to do the ones I'll struggle less with so the book pile won't seem so large and daunting. On the other hand I don't know if this is the right method because I might be doing things that I don't need to know without first knowing the basics.
Someone send halp.

tl;dr Loomis or Perspective Made Easy, what's best to start with?

Did you divide the face into thirds and check for proportions? Because your eyes should be at the midpoint of the head, but yours are much higher.

(Also, watch out for the difference between the "face" and the "head" for proportions. The face begins at the hairline, there's a bit of head above that, meaning eyes are in the middle of the *head* but not the face).

Look at references, practice actual anatomy, analyse what went right or wrong in your sketches, aim to improve.

don't blend. you can't mix digital paint anyway. have you ever painted in gouche? gouche doesn't "mix," yet you can still get gradients through careful transitions of value and temp. right now you're just putting paint on the canvas because you're trying too hard to copy, just put paint where it needs to be. if it's dark, make it dark. try doing tonal studies with just a few values and coming back to painting in color.

>> No.3590118

I started with silhouette rather than gesture and structure but I don't know if it worked out. Often times when painting digitally I feel that form becomes "emergent", created from an iterative process of adding layers and repainting the lighting until something comes out that makes sense.

I seriously hope you're fucking up proportions hilariously on purpose.
As for the butt, you drew the pelvis tilted with the bottom plane visible (which is a normal alignment), but failed to represent the muscles that originate from the illiac crest as following the top edge of that side plane.

Do you think Hank Hill had a love for propane from the womb? Love and appreciation is an acquired taste, it is developed. Some people click with it better, others don't and sometimes never.

Like most things in life, try it and if you don't like it, drop it...unless you're paying for it
Never pay for anything you're not completely informed on or interested in.

there is no risk in pursuing a hobby, but there is ALOT of regret if you never try and years later down the line you realize you wasted your life not doing what you wanted to do. I say give it a shot, and if it starts to click then you know you're going down the right path. Sometimes it just takes a few false starts.

>> No.3590421

>>3590417
if youre having trouble with some of those proportions add a jaw and a neck shape, its hard to really visualize it from just a ball.

also done be afraid to freehand some of these lines! using ellipse and line tools in your program is a crutch and probably doing more harm than good

relative to?
if you're asking about accuracy, no, i don't think a ball or a head looks like that

bad jokes aside, >>3590421 listen to this guy
and also, no, it's not right, the horizontal line on the left goes up too far to make sense on a sphere
You need to focus more on how these lines interact in real 3D space, rather than neat it looks or if it's accurate to whatever how-to illustrations.

I don't know how you managed to get that far with such shit confidence in your own lines. Shouldn't you, at this point know the basic shape of things well enough to pull lines easily?
