So I have a question regarding painting that has plagued me for a while now. When I learned to use color, I learned primarily through digital painting. So I became used to utilizing the color wheel similar to the one in the picture. From my understanding, the x-axis represents saturation and the y-axis represents value.

However, in every painting class I've ever taken the instructor advised against using black or grays which were made using black. Does this mean that we are meant to paint only with the colors represented by the very top or far right of this box?

Sorry if this question seems dumb or if it's been asked before. If you could provide an answer or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!

Oh dang, is that why software like Krita and PS have those triangular selectors as default? That could make sense, Ive also been using this square one and I also frequently use unsaturated dark colours in the grey zone

Yeah. Jus set it to a triangle, if you use CSP the red box in your pic does exactly that.

So when painting in a traditional medium (like oils) is this still a valid way to think about color? Whenever I would try to imitate my digital process with traditional medium, I kept finding myself unable to produce the colors I wanted.

Sorry I don't have a lot of time to write up at the moment, but I do remember a video so I found it for you to have a watch, it's digital too, so I figured it'd be perfect. Helps explain it, somewhat.

didn't he explain why?
pigments have many issues that you don't need to worry for in digital. people used to be concerned a lot by muddy colors before digital

Yeah this sounds like a pigment issue. I've seen a lot of digital artists use grey palletes and have nice looking results.

And even if you try mixing blacks with colors for shadows it never works right. so it's generally suggested not to even bother

mix burnt umber or something like that with blues if you want to do "black"

What these anons said. You don't use black or white because they desaturate everything on top of just darkening or lightening it, giving preety muddy colors, so often a better method is to darken a color with another one, like blue or its complementary.
This is not a problem with digital, since you can bring back saturation whenever you want.

Also, regarding the triangle, it's just a shape dude. See how with the square you have one corner of the pure saturated tone, one corner of white, and two corners of black? Yeah, you don't loose much of anything taking one of those black corners away. Sycra says the triangle "makes more sense" just because the square it's redundant. It has nothing to do with "colors that you shouldn't use, so they took them away on the triangle" lmao.

this guy gets it. Makes the good point that you can use blacks to bring down cool colors like blue without destroying everything

Read up on the actual color models that are represented in these selectors.

Saturation and brightness are linked in visual perception, but as for the square selector in particular, it represents the HSV models in the 0..1 range. However in reality colors become less saturated when you reduce brightness, therefore the triangular selector is more perceptually meaningful. (There is no such thing as saturated black, but it exists on the selector which reveals its flawed design)

Lab is most correct, but less intuitively useful since hue and saturation don't exist

In regards to digital this means that you shouldn't just use pure blacks and whites for rendering your paintings. You also shouldn't just use only square for picking darker and lighter values, you must use color (the wheel) as well.
Also switch to lab.

Not OP but why would a different shape matter? I don't know a thing about painting and color
For that matter how do I understand color better as an absolute beginner? Do I just copy ref trying to paint what i see?
