hey, good to see you still post here and are open to crit and discussion, you're def one of my favorite porn artists. i wish i could help you with crit but i am too much of a beginner
i wanted to ask you though, how do you go on about studying people personally? as someone very into figures and possibly porn in the future, drawing people accurately is my top priority and what i enjoy most. but as a beg i am confused as to how to approach learning figures. i know some artists go the whole 9 yards with boxes, construction, grids and whatnot, but others seem to just eyeball it then copy ref trying to get it right, until seemingly they learn proportions and form by memory
sorry if its a weird or hard to answer question

My biggest advice to you is to draw using references. With time, as you'll build your visual library (the library of references you store in your memory), you won't need to use refs anymore. Besides that grind perspective. If you want to be able to invent any kind of pose from imagination, this is a must.
Combining a strong visual library with an internalized feel for perspective is the basis if you want to draw from imagination.

>>3576093
>>3576101
I can see that, yeah. I don't think it's a recurring problem or a very glaring error in this particular case, but I'll definitely watch out for that more. Thanks for pointing that out.

Working on this, seems a bit too busy right now and I need to expand the canvas, among other things. At least it’s not too dull like the last few NSFW things I’ve done, so that’s nice.

I'd suggest you to first pick up a book about perspective to learn what is it all about. And do some proper studying about it. Then it's all about repeating all that long enough for your brain to internalize the concepts.
Building a visual library it's not the same as learning perspective.

Check this stuff out for starters.

>> No.3576209

>>3576167
I actually read that and know a few things even tho i have to finish perspective made easy. i already know of the horizon line, vanishing points other than 1p perspective are still unclear to me
i just can't imagine what studying perspective would be aside from drawing simple forms from different angles and maybe connecting them to the horizon line
i suppose i could also start using the perspective grid in my work as csp has built in tools for that iirc but its a bit confusing still for me

>> No.3576381

>>3576209
Continuously drawing boxes from different angles won't do you any good in the long run. At one point you have to move from that to organic shapes (characters), but you still need to apply all those principles to it. Basically you just need to be able to give proper presence and weight to the characters and objects you draw.
That's what internalizing perspective means. It's similar to building a visual library, like you mentioned before, but it's not the same thing. One is about observation, the other about rewiring your brain so that your feeling for perspective becomes second nature.
Btw, both these things are a lifelong journey of learning. It's not like you put in a few years into each and then you're set for life.
Well, getting good at everything works like that, not just art, I guess.

Bottom line probably is; just draw. No matter how memey this sounds, it's the truth.

I use clip studio paint and usually I soft shade with a normal round soft brush or use a blender brush.
And I agree with what you said. My stuff is mostly very rough and lacks polish. But that's because 90% of the commissions and requests I make are to be considered sketches. On average I spend between 1 and 3 hours on my artworks. Sometimes I go beyond that to 6-8 hours, but that happens rarely and in those occasions my stuff is more polished I guess.
Reason for this is that this is my work and I try to produce as much content for as many people as possible. And I also prefer this kind of workflow, cause 1) I'm not a patient person and 2) I think working on more shorter projects helps me improve faster and gives me more content for promoting myself.

>>3574815
Seems to stay away from the "toothpaste tube design" but it may have a problem with the angle of the hips and ribcage. They seem to match even though that's anatomically irregular, the hips and ribcage typically have opposite angles. (depending on motion) Although the pose is appealing and it has a prominent silhoutte.

I think you have a general problem with ignoring ribcages.

It's most egregious on the bodies in 4/5/6, 3 is probably just right although some of the lines like under her belly button seem excessive. It seems like places that you should shade a different tone along with pushing value range more overall.

To answer your question, I decided to make myself marketable, so I started focusing on speed more than on polish.
And in the last year or so I improved a ton in that regard.
People want my art, and I'm delivering what they want.
I am a commercial illustrator and I never considered myself an artist.
Making banks and putting food on my table is my n1 priority, so I can't really afford to draw deep art or I dunno how you want to call that.
It's pretty simple, really.

You know what, now that I think about it, I exactly know when I made the transition from wanting to make it to actually making it.
It was when I first discovered this video:

So why are you here? Why does a commercial illustrator have to come to an image board that caters to anonymous users, to ask for this:

>Here's some of my latest stuff.
I'd appreciate any kind of critique, specially if you see any recurring problems. Thx.

Aren't YOU supposed to be the professional commercial illustrator here? Why do you need any kind of critique from any anonymous users, unless you're worried that your work is as flawed as your work ethic and that following that video's advice has really taken a toll on your commission work. So in order for you to rustle up some new business, you come here to shill, but disguise it, as you so humbly asking for any kind of critique. Hell, I'd do the same thing if I needed new customers, too.

I think you made a mistake thinking that your artwork was going to keep you sustained and afloat. You're probably in your mid to late 30's freaking out about where the next commission is going to come from, much like those working from paycheck to paycheck. And all it really takes is for one of your patrons to turn on you and upload your work for people to download, and that's if you're even relevant anymore which you really aren't. I saw your commission model, and I have to be honest, that's a huge con—Eric Basaldua kind of con. Rather than offer people their bang for their buck when they pledge to you, you offer them points on a carousel, hoping their commission work will land one of the coveted spots on your schedule.

And you spend three hours on a commission. How are you not drawing at a higher level among other artists who are clearly better than you within the same allotted amount of time?

You're struggling to stay alive, despite what your Patreon claims to show off as far as your monthly income. You gotta pay bills, pay the mortgage, feed your kids, pay off your car, pay insurance on that said car, then 5,000 a month turns into a measly 700 bucks, if not less for you to live on.

>> No.3579812

>>3579803
I predict within one year you'll fold like a lawn chair, and you'll join in the rapid decline of artists who like you, made the mistake of thinking that their artwork was going to be a viable source of income from which to live on, but are now seeing the truth of how horribly wrong you've become, and you're seeking validation from any source to feed your fear on how everything is going to be alright. It's no wonder you posted SIX pictures from which people to give your critique on, just to feel like your life choice was a good one.

You're following the mantra of fools and pursuing their gold. But you're doing a great job. You keep doing what you're doing and in no time at all, you'll be financially stable and your kids won't have to worry about when the next meal is going to come from.

Good luck, because you're going to need it.

The idea is there but you lack execution at the moment. I could say 'muh fundies' and be right but let me be a bit more clearer on that.

The biggest things I'm seeing at the moment are the lighting, perspective and anatomy in that order. That doesn't mean that your anatomy is great since it's lower on the list I just mean in this particular picture those are the biggest faults.

The way you rendered doesn't look like it really took any form of lighting into account. Make sure you establish a light source before rendering and stick to it. It helps me to draw a little cylinder pointing in the direction I want the light to be at before I start. Also use darker values for the shadows as right now everything is pretty much similar in terms of how dark or light it is.

The perspective of the characters anatomy is incorrect in a lot of places but this also ties into your anatomical knowledge as well. Don't be afraid to draw a big box around your character and make sure your proportions line up. An example here would be with the elbows, facial features, feet etc. Also with the table Elsa is sitting on it looks too basic in terms of its construction and also you can see the legs don't quite line up horizontally in perspective. This can also help with the pattern on the wall in the background.

Finally with anatomy this is something you just need to work on over a long period of time. Study major muscle masses and bone structures, do gesture drawings and learn how these things turn in perspective. It's mostly about building up your visual library by hammering these concepts into your head so you can think of them in a 3D space and recall what looks like what. Of course still use references all the time.

Patreon can be just a tip jar (which in most cases is) to help you draw stuff your fans like, or you can offer rewards, where people can receive exclusive content you don't post on the internet otherwise (wips, sketches, high resolution versions of your art, etc.)

Hm. It's hard to say what it really means to start gaining traction. I started a tumblr about 3 years ago (besides that I was posting on Hentai Foundry as well). My goal was to get commissions, and the first requests started coming in fairly soon. I think it took me a couple of months.
I think hentai foundry in general is a better place to showcase your stuff if you want to get a clientele. Tumblr is better for showcasing to the public in general. Recently it actually became less good, so I'd suggest you to post on twitter as well (if you decide to do that, don't use tumblr's built in twitter connection; people won't care about those and you won't build a following on twitter with that; you have to retweet manually).

Anyway, I started a patreon 2 years after creating my tumblr gallery.
At the time I had around 20k tumblr followers. Now 1 year and a few months later I'm at 68k.
Just remember that the more art you post, the more exposure you create and the more followers you gain (which means more potential fans that are willing to support you on Patreon as well). Pic attached is an answer to a tumblr ask I received some time ago. Maybe it'll help.

in the US any gross income greater than $400 is subject to taxation. thanks to the miracle of digital transactions there's no real way to hide any of this income unless you somehow only accept cash payments and then never put them into your bank account. you could brush off a few one time deposits of a couple hundred to maybe a thousand or so dollars as gifts but if you start pulling in any amount of money regularly the irs'll know what's up. paypal as well will just instantly give the irs all your records should they ever ask for them for any reason.

Let me show you, in your own words, just how wrong you are in your definition, and what you hope to achieve in your life.

The drawing to the left, is a commercial illustration. What you draw, is not commercial illustration, nor are you, a commercial illustrator. There is nothing about your art that even comes REMOTELY close to what you claim to be, unless you hope to someday see your poorly drawn art on the side of a can, or on a lunchbox or god forbid, a billboard. What are you a "commercial illustrator" of, exactly?

And of course you don't come here to shill or get praised. Six posts does not make you a shill. Why not just post one—your BEST work to date—and ask for a humble critique on that? What do you need to SHILL five extra more for?

>I am speechless because of all the assumptions about my private life and by how mad you sound. You can have your opinion dude, but there are certain ways to express them. I'm not sure why you are so mad at me for posting here.
What truths hurt the most? Was it the one about the scam you give out to your Patreon supporters by giving out points for every dollar they spend on you; the very same people who pay your bills, your food, your rent, your car and anything you could possibly need? Or was it the one where I compared you to Eric Basaldua, who's every much a hack just like you, who stiffs his commissioneers with garbage deliveries, but then offers bullshit excuses when confronted with the truth about their "commercial" practices?

If you're looking for someone who was at the top of their game but then came crashing down from their perforated pedestal, Eric Basaldua is one of those examples.

I have my opinion about you, but I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you.

The thing that pisses me off about you phony experts running around with the Dunning-Kruger explanations about who they are is this: >>3580815
A garbage explanation to someone who's enthusiastic about drawing something pornigraphic, who's clearly an amateur but is willing to learn, only for you to come along and offer some of the most idiotic, dumbfounded and vomit-inducing critiques about their work, giving them absolutely NO CLUE on what to work on, but the buzz words you "commercial illustrators" use are CLEAR and PRESENT. You'd much rather have someone work on their lighting and put boxes around their characters in order to show them how proportions line up with boxes.

Here's another gem from your Rule 34 garbage gallery. How many boxes did it take for you to draw on that ATROCIOUS midsection for the cat dickgirl with the black hair, because if it worked for you, it sure as SHIT is going to work for someone who's barely starting out. And you've been doing this for THREE YEARS, your words, not mine: >>3581215

The only success that exists about you BBC Chan, is the success in your own mind, flaunting your mistakes around like a modern day Rob Liefeld.

Your (relative) success is just that. Relative. Considered in relation or in proportion to something else. But that something else, is absolutely nothing. But you keep giving out bullshit critiques to make you sound important, to make you sound cool as if some god descended from the heavens to speak truth about the way art should be created—Lighting, Perspective, and THEN anatomy. In that order, bestowed upon us by the GREAT BBC Chan, whose world revolves around BOXES.

Clearly.

Well, come to think of it, the PERSPECTIVE might be okay, but the LIGHTING is still good. As far as the anatomy goes well, it's FINISHED but not PERFECT."

The second hour passes on and still you neglect to see any mistakes in your work. By the time you get to the third hour you think to yourself, "Finished, but not perfect."

>The prices for these commissions are based on time I spend on them. 1 slot costs 50 EUR (which is cca. 58 USD) and for that I will draw for approximately 3 hours. This means the more your commission is complex (multiple characters, backgrounds, accessories, etc.) the less detailed it will turn out in the end.
For example, if you request 3 characters with some background elements, you will probably get a rougher lineart with some grayscale shading, but if you request a 1 character pinup, the lineart will be cleaner and probably I will be able to add colors.

Incorrect.

The reason I even put it that way is just a habbit I guess. That's not to say it's an absolute must you HAVE to do things in this order right now or you won't improve. It was meant to be a general guide on things I see that are incorrect and in what order their severity. I offered some advice on what kinds of things he could do to fix those and I suggested he tackle them in that order.

Like I mentioned above and in my crit the reason I said these things was from looking at the image and determining what seemed the weakest at the time. The lighting because there is no semblance of lighting in the image. The perspective because of the images perspective with the table and how proportions line up. The anatomy because the seeming lack of knowledge in the image at the moment.

Why don't you do what these threads are intended for and help people improve? I'm looking to improve as well as this individual looking for a crit. Help us so we can be better.

the perspective on this piece is definitely off its pretty glaring with that hand since its the center of the piece. id definitely taking some time to grind out hand practice as in general practicing the hand will help you do foreshortening across the entire body if you get it down.

this is kinda p[resent in all your work but you use a 2 tonal shade in most of your pictures then use a blur effect to create the fade. This has been your way to shade for a while and most people start out with this method but move on from it because it creates a muddy look in general. if you like it so be it but my recommendation is play with using 3 distinct colors in the shadow and blend and to drop the blur tool or 100% soft brush you are using make good flat tones that look nice then transition to soft fades.

shit man, /ic's just not the same nowadays, people here rarely give good feedback for anyone above beginner level. Nice vid, guess I don't have an excuse of not finishing my shit anymore.
Now for the advice: I personally think you would benefit the most from adding a good terminator shadow on your figures, right now you're still suffering from the biggest lineartst flaw: overall flatness of the forms.
I was kinda mocking the fine arts people for always doing THAT particular shadow on the body every fucking time, but especially after doing a shitton of life studies I realised that a good terminator shadow makes the figure look a hundred times better, and doesn't really take too much time (pic related)
The second advice would be to learn basic 3d posing software like Daz3d or Poser and do your shit like Tarakanovich or any other guy who doesn't work with photos - just pose a mannequin and then use it as a base, since you're doing commercial illustration every trick is viable, don't let the crabs stop you.
Good luck, and don't allow yourself to settle in the comfort zone, or you will start losing your art gains!

It's just so fuckin nice to see successful artists who're willing to take the time to help others trying to make their way up the skill ladder, even if it's just a few minutes out of their day, especially because I've seen how much content you produce and I can't imagine how busy you are because of it. I got exhausted just trying to maintain Twitter, Tumblr, HF and Patreon, not to mention fan engagement. I couldn't maintain consistency.

Can anybody give me some pointers on this ambient occlusion shtick? This is my first time attempting it, and whilst I feel like I've got a very rough idea of what to do, I can see that I'm missing a big step somewhere and it's just not translating.

I thought I'd practice on this little figure I drew the other day so it's not a final attempt, but I want some guidance before I proceed any further cause right now I feel like I'm wasting my time.

When you do ambient occlusion just think of really dark shadows in areas where objects are very close together and light can't scatter properly. You have the right approach, but you want to go darker and add more contrast.
See pic attached (bottom left part is just ambient occlusion). Bekkaliev does great ambient occlusion. Try googling more of his works.

>>3583955
ambient occlusion are the places where light cannot bounce into so the shadows you have painted now are not light occluded shadows theyre just normal shadows
youll find ambient occlusion at the tightest points where light cannot get in (you probably know that light can bounce into places its not directly pointed at for instance light will still bounce off the environment or right leg onto the left leg that's in shadow). so maybe the deepest point of the cleavage, the nostril, mouth corners

Consider this. Many of the marks in your linedrawing implies AO. In the face, the marks that indicates the nostril area, the division between the lips and the corner of the mouth. The line under the breast to the right is AO.

According to your numbers, and given the light research I did crunching the numbers you provided through a few online GBD currency conversion rates, these are all numbers that signify that BBC Chan makes less than minimum wage for a monthly income based in the UK alone. To be safe, I don't think you should be flaunting numbers like those around and pretend that you're living it up, provided that you're barely surviving at all by your very own country's standards. That stress that you're talking about, the one BBC is experiencing, is what a lot of people in the work force suffer when an employee is barely living paycheck to paycheck. And according to you, both you and BBC have been living like this, for over a year.
>>3583096
Not only are your numbers incorrect about your boyfriend's minimum wage, but you're also a terrible person by assuming people are black when they present you solid facts about your boyfriend' work, which really was nothing more than a question about his work ethic, which time and time again, he defers to a video on YouTube as his mantra, which is terrible advice to any one of us beginners hoping to make something viable out of the choice we've made when it comes to drawing pornographic material. It's almost as if BBC is blatantly trying to derail anyone who will probably get better than him. No better way to weaken the competition than by offering them false information, right?

Why not post a video from a noted professional instead? At least that way, we can all be inspired just like your boyfriend was. And your constant badgering about me posting my work only furthers the light you're standing under when it comes to your elitist thinking. You already know I'm a beginner, and just because I call out your boyfriend on his work ethic, you automatically call me a nigger and beg me to post my work so that you can roast me on it. You're an awful person, and now everyone can see that for their own eyes through everything you've written.

>> No.3584638

>>3584618
But what I find really interesting, borderline disturbing actually, is this post here >>3579884
and what BBC said in this post here >>3581141 in particular
>And getting honest critique is hard when people aren't as anonymous as they are here.

That's a direct jab at you, BBC girlfriend. Instead of turning to you for advice and honest critique on his work, or his work ethic or anything else related to his work; YOU the girlfriend, the one person he should trust in hearing the truth, doesn't.

That's terrible. Because if you can't rely on your own girlfriend to tell you the truth about what you're doing, or being able to turn to you for advice on any work, where does the trust exist in that relationship?

Think about that. Sure, you could argue that you know nothing about art and that you have no idea about porn, but I know I would turn to you and ask you if I were drawing stuff like this>>3578935 , because that's where your meals are coming from. The worse he gets, and really only to solidify his mantra over your sustainability and lifestyle, the money starts to go away. You'll find yourself trying to get a job just to keep you both afloat, or you'll get tired of him not bringing home the kind of money he used to a year ago, or worse.

You'll find someone better.

But I digress. I think you both have done a fantastic job of showing everyone here who you really are, what you think about beginners and more importantly, that posting videos like the one BBC has done, is done primarily to derail any competition from anyone.

But those who are smart enough to see through your business practices, your racism and your belittling of opinions will only grind along quietly and before you know it, better artists will emerge who are going to take business away from your boyfriend, who are going to show you that building a product on a shaky foundation will crumble out from underneath you, leaving you with that ultimate choice when you realize, "Finished, not perfect."

Minimum wage in the UK for over 25's is £7.83 ph, which when working 8 hours a week would amount to £1879.20 / $2,446.80 pcm. On BBC's Patreon "alone" he's making $5k pcm - quite literally double minimum wage. Your math is shit.

And yeah my boyfriend and I were on a lower wage for a year, that is until he got his 12 month review and had his salary increased to £39k. I'm on £11.56 per rota working 10 hours pw and bring an additional £6000 or so from my job, not calculating in the money I make from commissions.
