Does anyone experience this? Using photoshop CS6, at times my pen pressure seems to get ignored and it'll register and just blot down the full size brush.

How important is Keys to Drawing/Drawing on the right side of the brain for absolute beginners? Like someone thats barely drawn before in their life. Debating if i should go over it before i tackle other fundamentals.

>> No.3571574

>>3571510
Skip drawing on the right side of the brain, but strongly suggest you do Keys to drawing (and actually doing the exercises).
Assuming when you say absolute beginner that you have no experience, Keys overall doesn't bother you with construction but rather with observation and just putting a pencil to paper and get some feel for drawing.
Doing fundies is for people with at least the motor skills/muscle memory to control what they're doing.
FIRST draw from life, get a feel for putting down lines, then delve into how to approach it technically.

I watched a video that was posted here weeks ago (I can't remember the title or find the video for the life of me). As a beginner trying to figure out figure drawing
During the process of drawing a figure should I focus on the gesture or the construction? As in, do I have to use a mannequin to construct the figure every time or start with the gesture? Or both? At the very least I think I have to draw the horizon line every time for the sake of having at least some amount of perspective
I'm still unsure as to how to go on about things properly. I know some people just construct everything but I also know of artists with good skill that say they never constructed shit, no Loomis or any books, but I have no idea how they figured out how to draw people properly. I'm guessing at that point it comes down to mileage

>>3572611
Obviously not him but how do I do a gesture and also keep the perspective and proportions in check? I am starting to get gesture studies right I think but every time something is off about the body and I don't know how to apply the gesture to imagination work unless I am drawing a pose from my visual library

What exactly is 'making it'? It sounds like getting paid to work decently in the art industry. You should do some research into the company you're aiming for since the majority of them don't care about actual artists, just if your portfolio output meets their criteria (this is why there's heavy emphasis on connections more than talent).

Most people who are able to draw well aren't even in the art field. I know someone who draw figures in the medical field, and professional architects nitpick at the tiniest details in design. Every field employs some level of art, but it's not a necessity to getting better pay.

It's also why artists are stereotypically considered stupid in the career field. A lot of young people are suckered into the art industry in hopes of getting recognition. What they don't realize is the few who do get realized are so few and far in between and you have to try really fucking hard to get recognition. Of course, standing out is what you have to do at any job, but for young artists it's usually demeaning, especially true for current trends in social networking platforms. Good luck.

Gestures before constructions. If you spend time trying to first construct it will eat up as much time as if you were to practice gestures. Your drawings will end up looking stiff. Don't worry about the accuracy with gestures if you're a beginner. The basic idea of gesture drawing is understanding the flow of the human figure. It should take 30-45 seconds or less. Construction is second and that usually comes with anatomy.

Later on you can learn proportions, but this can go in between your practice with gestures and construction and not necessarily at the end.

Don't burn yourself out with like, grinding 200+ gestures in a short amount of time. If it's not your usual work output, it's not going to make you any better than thoughtful 40-60 gestures at 45 sec intervals each day till you feel confident to move on. It also helps to reward yourself afterwards with probably a fun drawing to remind you of why you want to be proficient in figures to begin with. I've pretty much stopped the fun drawing portion because my dedication has turned to fundies. Kinda like how people would reward themselves with some unhealthy food after workout, but then it gradually tapers off to dedicated health food.

>Later on you can learn proportions, but this can go in between your practice with gestures and construction and not necessarily at the end.
I haven't made it clear before but I should have pointed out I am not a total beginner, essentially I had some experience with drawing as I did draw on and off for years and even studied in that time, I just didn't get serious about it until now. Now I am looking to make my figures accurate because although I feel my general anatomical knowledge isn't awful, my proportions are still kinda screwed as I didn't study them much. I'm not sure if I should just eyeball and copy more ref of people and build my experience like that or rely on construction (I do know some skilled artists don't seem to use much construction at all and I guess that is thanks to experience)
>Don't burn yourself out with like, grinding 200+ gestures in a short amount of time.
>Kinda like how people would reward themselves with some unhealthy food after workout, but then it gradually tapers off to dedicated health food.
My problem right now is that I do want to draw every day and get good but the fun part of drawing has kinda died
That is, I do have fun studying shit but not drawing from imagination, I always feel upset that my work doesn't come out as what I imagine it in my head. So studying is kinda my comfort zone that I don't want to get out of
Unfortunately many pro/skilled artists advice against doing only studies or just not drawing from imagination in general, as it won't make you grow, and that terrifyies me

Anyone here have any advice from/for someone who's "made it"?

I make a comic that's pretty popular. It's not, like, HOMESTUCK popular but it's well known enough that you or someone you know vaguely knows about it. And it's great! It's cool, I'm even doing a con for the first time in a few months. So I don't want to come off like someone who's whining about how their golden toilet seat isn't pre heated. This is cool, and I wouldn't change anything, but it has all these new problems that I don't really know how to solve.

People develop these intense one sided relationships with you and feel cheated when they get to know you. I've even had people try and dig up "receipts" which is cool and not weird and stalkerish. I also just don't know how to interact with my "fanbase". I don't know how to interact with people in general, honestly. This is really tough since most artists, myself included, are kind of their own brand.

Also I feel a lot of weird survivor's guilt. Like I'm a pretty good artist, and I work very hard, but there are a lot more talented/harder working artists out there. I know them and I don't really know how to talk about this stuff because I feel like they should be here, not me.

So yeah any advice? I have a couple other things getting to me but I'm way too tired to think of them right now. Thanks guys

You should look at noses and eyes too. Eventually with drawing you learn what lines you want to emphasize to produce depth, volume, or the weight you want to convey. Lines or strokes often carry more than one function. They might describe shading, outline/contrast, local value, a texture, or the cross-contour of the form. Using more lines is more detail to draw the eye toward so typically you want to avoid drawing every line you see.

Because it's very hard to control your brush and pigment with digital. You lay flat colors so that you can easily select the parts you want to paint. This lets you render and control edges by clipping/masking only the sections you want to paint. Clipping to your selection means "I only want to paint within this portion", like masking or covering the rest of your canvas with tape.

It does sound like a driver issue. If you have a wacom, make sure in your tablet properties you've added them as an application. If it says "DRIVER NOT FOUND" that's your issue. You can restart the driver in your services by looking for Wacom Professional Driver and restarting it and the art programs. If even that doesn't work, the website of any manufacturer should have drivers for download.
also you need to set the stabilizer in sai manually. In the bar under the fie, edit etc. there's a bar with the controls. The last one is stabilizer. The higher the number is, the slower slower the brush cursor moves in a sense, but the smoother it becomes. The S-1, S-2... are mostly for precision lineart, but if you're super wobbly-handed you can start set it anywhere from 10 to S-2 depending on what feels comfortable.
You can also set this and pressure sensitivity directly for certain brushes you make or edit by right clicking and selecting options or double clicking.

you could make a FAQ with art tips politely explaining that while you appreiciate love, you are focusing on your own self care. or something like that.

and honestly, if you can admit 'i didn't pull up by my bootstraps to be better than you, i am mostly just lucky' i don't think those talented artists would resent you unless they're by nature jealous people.

especially if your webcomic is built on humor instead of storytelling/art (?) i understand if you don't want to elaborate on that.

Some tips: try making a whole piece with one color using both cools and warms of that color.

But the color or hue does not even matter that much, the value is the most important thing. If you get the values right you can use any color there you want.

You can google "color harmonies" and it will give you some basic information about colors. I like to colorpick from nature pictures, say some kind of animal, birds are very good for this. Just google some images of birds and pick colors from them.

Also there is the book by James Gurney called Color and Light, which I have seen people recommend. But I have not read this book (yet) so I can't say how good or bad it is. Might be worth checking out too.

I actually don't know what people mean by this, and I see a lot of artists give this kind of answer. If you mean just do what you like to do until you get good at it, well I don't know how well that works and that would probably end up in me skimming over the more boring things like constructing with boxes and perspective grids and shit because I find that so boring as opposed to gesture and organic forms which I really like drawing. I understand why people say that as learning art comes down a lot to intuition, but as a beginner trying to learn how to learn, it's not easy for me to understand just what I should be doing to get good
>Also I'm not familiar with your drawings enough to criticize what you should work on.
I can post my current WIP if you want. I mean I think I do know I should work on, but it's the kind of thing that I find harder to figure out than anatomy where I can just look at photos then medical pictures of muscles or whatever and draw these until I learn how the muscles work.

No, she's just having fun since she's still a kid. Girls are easily impressed with Japanese animation because it helps them channel some creative outlet. Action packed cartoons are usually weak with dealing with the emotional side of animation.

If you can find cartoons, shows, or movies that pertain to her interests, she would hopefully stop drawing anime, but it's really difficult these days to find an appealing animation that isn't anime. If you have time, take her outdoors instead of leaving her with the internet.

Either way, your kid seems happy. She's not drawing corpses (kinda a red flag for girls, not really for young boys).

I'm doing Bargue plates, and I'm not sure exactly where my focus should be. Each plate takes a little over one hour to do. If I could, I want to get to a point where I can accurately sight check stuff without autistically measuring every distance. Is this a realistic goal?
Can you get sufficiently good at sighting to be able to capture a likeness, or will you always have to measure?
Or is it not even required to be perfectly accurate to capture a likeness? What does an acceptable error margin look like?
Should I check stuff as I'm working, or keep working until something pops up as being wrong? I only care about the method that gives me the most experience.

Then you'd be better dealing with studying traditional methods. Underpainting and then a lot of "glazing"/layering/texturing. It's a long process and a lot of work. I can't think of anything off the top of my head but this should be a decent start but it's also long
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygkJEc3yu4&list=PL0SSy7vUJ6ExSzVbhaliZ6S8242dJtKDm&index=2

Check out other traditional art books and videos to try to correlate it to digital. Those are pretty lofty goals if you don't have much experience at all painting. As you go you'll likely find a different style. Practice and experiment as much as you can, don't get sucked into the brush game. Get a small set of oil-like brushes and go off. But first learn to use a hard round and soft round.

Feeling 'artistic' is just a spur of the moment feeling, it's not suppose to fuel you in the long run. Being passionate about drawing, however, requires dedication and takes even the dullest moments of practice into account. If you don't feel in the long run that the moments of practice will benefit you, then you either 1) need to take a step back and breathe if you've been grinding excessively 2) acknowledge art isn't purely your thing. You probably enjoy it as a fleeting fancy - aka it's just fun- but taking it as a serious route is consuming your time being better at something else.

I don't mind frogposting because freedom of whatever etc., it just lacks the individuality that 4chan explored with reaction images. Yea, it's called thumbnail sketching. And composition. And flow, since gesture drawing should help with how a background or figure should idealistically lead the human eye.

Gesture drawing is never 100% accurate with figures or backgrounds. It's always more playful than literal studies.

If you're going for stylistic like cartoon/anime, then no, you honestly don't need to learn anything else aside from basic anatomy and possibly perspective if you're going for dynamic poses.

But if you want to come up with your own poses without looking for references every time you get stuck, then it's worth investing your time in everything anatomy. Learning the skeleton helps you understand the parts that move (twists, turns, rotation), and the muscles help with realistic shading.

Proko is friendly for beginners and experts to reeducate themselves on anatomy.

There are alot of nuances but for the basics just remember that female eyes have rounder upper eyelids while males have a more horizontal section with sharper angles, and fairer skin has less wrinkles so use less lines even if you see some (unless you're going full realism and account for every shadow and blemish since they're often the same shading as less prominent areas).

There are stereotypical features like rounder cheeks/faces, narrower chin and thicker lower lip but there are women with the exact opposite features. I've had the most luck when getting the eyes right so practice those.

Of course.

You can work your way up to it too if you're finding it a bit difficult.
You can start with detailed grids to make it easier to measure stuff out.
And eventually you can reduce how many intersections your grid has, until all you have is a center line for x and y axis.
Eventually you can get rid of those too, and just eye ball it.

And for comparative measurement, when it doubt measure, all it's going to do is take a little more time, which is fine if you're doing 25 minute layins or 2-3 hour studies.
It's better to spend a little more time early on plotting things out than to realize you fucked up when you start adding details.
If you want to improve your eyeballing, do shorter studies, like 1-10 minutes.

The image on the left is the default pressure sensitivity curve and the one on the right is the softest available in the driver settings. Nothing I do seems to change this, it's like the hardware itself is fucked. I had the Giano at one point and it didn't do this.

Update: I just tested my friend's pen on my tablet and it works fine. Guess the pen is fucked. Lucky I just bought it.

if it's the pen, have you tried pulling the nib out and reinserting it? long shot, but I hear it can work

Get Krita. It also works on Linux.

I used Gimp back in the days when my Linux distro had not other art program alternative. You can finish drawings in Krita faster than Gimp.

Know your target audience and advertise on sites with said target audience. You can also try networking with art groups with the same mindset. Sci-fi doesn't work well for like, anime audience unless you draw in their preferred style. It also has to have appealing drawing or writing.

Post work.

I'm buying furniture for what will be my """studio""" and I wanted to know if anybody has any tips and dos and don'ts about buying a desk that I plan to do a lot of digital painting on?

Space is relatively limited as he room is thin and long and the desk has to be parallel to the long wall, window is on the left when facing the way the desk will face, in case hat changes anything

Should I get a raised platform for my laptop so I have more space for the tablet?

Any tips are more than welcome
(Random desk for attention)

What kind of pencils and paints would you guys recommend for life drawing classes, or school in general? I start this life drawing class soon and they say to bring your own stuff but have no idea what I would actually need besides paper, and some shitty penciil; there’s painting involved too

bold pencils, the ones with only a b and a number on them. portable sharpener, the kind with a barrel attached. maybe some cheap charcoal and an eraser.
