I want to make a silly multi-genre game, so apparently I need to become a silly multi-disciplined artist.

Maybe I should start "small" with an expository comic or something like that-but after all these years I (rightly) don't feel confident enough to even do something rudimentary like that. Fuck me.

I think I have the skills to do my passion project but I can't do it without my partner, it's as much his story as it is mine and it wouldn't be what it is had it not been for his heavy input.

It's going to be an ongoing webcomic. We already have a lot of the general outline of the story as a whole done with a few stories already made, we just need to make the dialogue. I wouldn't have started grinding and being serious with my art had it not been for this thing. All of my grinding, studying, and practice in drawing other's comics will culminate into this comic eventually.

It’s gone. All my passion is gone. I had so many ideas when I started art, web comics, graphic novels, concept art, even animated short films. Now I don’t care. I have no reason to draw but I still do it daily out of some jaded sense of obligation. The habit of drawing has been ingrained in me and I carry it out like a robot. There is no more emotion in it and the embers of my lost passion have long since faded. My mind is constantly clouded by fog and these days I can’t even remember why I started drawing in the first place.

Some sort of non-weeb visual novel. I already have some programming background and i bet these days you don't even need that. I'm not even into videogames so even something that comprises music, illustration and narrative would fulfill this desire. Something that feel like a complete work of art in a Wagner-like sense

I would like to consistently produce songs and illustrations, Currently both take me waaay to much time.

I got fired around 2 months after a decade of holding the same full time job but I love art too much to go back to that world. Therefore I would like to sustain myself with my own work to keep doing it full time and do it better.

I think the last one is close enough I'm currently living out of my savings and I make around 200usd per month in commissions, I hope I can set up a Patreon before the end of the year too

Passion project at the moment is a 12 chapter romcom doujin about my favorite series. Tbh, if I applied myself I could have been a couple chapters in at this point in the year, but I've been grinding instead to make my art better and give me extra time to figure out the writing and overarching story. I'm also shit at storyboarding so figuring out the page layouts take me forever.
After this, I'd like to adapt some spooky skinwalker/goatman/wendigo innawoods /x/ stories into comics for a year or two before doing an original horror series and trying to get it published at Image or Dark Horse comics or something. Let's see what the next 5 years hold for me.

I don't necessarily have any books on writing because to be honest, I've never read one. I don't even really read (much) fiction books so perhaps my grammar and sentence structures are weak too. (I read nonfiction).

Regardless, my advice for writing stories is the same as being a good conversationalist. Soak up everything you can and start connecting dots. A good start if your mind is a blank is just nosedive Wikipedia and end up with about 100 tabs you find interesting. Just keep clicking around.

Eventually you'll start to see a place / time period / biography that sounds interesting that you would like to "remix" as your own.

Basically EVERYTHING is good if you can finish this sentence: "Damn wouldn't it be cool if...?!" That's imagination.

Obviously they've had a huge impact on american comic book creators, but I don't see how that prevents you from checking out european comic books or american non superhero comic books. Also plenty of great artists who used to work for Marvel and DC have moved on to do their own thing and the influence from the big 2 hasn't negatively affected them at all. And on top of that you must be seriously retarded if you haven’t even bothered to check out the gazillion other non marvel/DC comics out there. Just in the West you have publishers like Image putting out tons of new and unique books that are nothing like the stuff at the big 2. And then you have top notch shit coming out of the franco-belgian scene as well. Sit down and actually read some comics my dude. Have you ever met a painter who didn’t like any paintings? I have a modern fantasy setting in mind, where instead of the usual thing where mystic elements are either hidden or appeared just recently, magic and technology existed together from the beginning of time.
I've been scared of starting any work about it for a few years already, always having an excuse of "i'll do it later once i'm actually good", but recently i got fed up with this fear and decided to do a bunch of short manga stories to explore the setting and practice writing and composing.
Here are some designs for the main character of the first story.

Create a test short webcomic (maybe like an intro to your actual story?), because the best way to become good at them is to actually do them.

A lot of the people posting here should ask themselves "What is my comic bringing to the table?" Why would I want to read your fantasy thing(Warcraft,D&D, The lord of the rings are already there)? Why would I want to read your medieval setting thing? Why would I want to read your scifi thing(Star wars,Star trek,Gundam are already there)? Why would I want to read your manga (Dragon Ball, One Piece, GTO, Berserk are already there)? Why would I want to play your indie game(Shovel Knight, Owlboy, Shantae are already there)? Why would I want to read/watch/follow you instead of the artists you're trying to mimick (Ruan Jia, Mullins, Vetyr, sakimichan are already there)?...

I've been developing what I've generally conceptualized as a video game since I was about 10 or 12 years old. It started as a way to pass my time in summer camp.
It's a "gothic" science fiction universe that mixes politics and war with questions about the nature of humanity and how we are affecting the other beings we share the galaxy with, which includes aliens, eldritch abominations and a few outliers.
And yes, I know obvious comparisons can be made to many popular franchises out there, and I will openly admit that I've been influenced by lots of different science fiction novels, and architectural concepts, and I just want to show people a different future.

I've had ideas to try and start a comic on cryptids. I've had the first couple of chapters written down and I drew a small number of concepts but I've stopped a few months back.
I don't know anything about making a comic, or where to put it online. I just want a platform I can tell stories and draw on. How do I soak up the strength to keep on making this comic, and how do I make it the best it can be?

Doing my 3 year old manga. Already did one 50 page chapter on pencil and have done 2/3 of the second chapter.
I've already written the plot and designed over 150 characters for the plot. It's gonna be a jojo/opm like battle-manga of 3 seasons, each of them counting 5 arcs.
Once I finish the inking of the first chapter, I'll let you judge by yourselves.

To be fair, people who desperately try to be original tend to produce by far the worst work in any creative media. They almost universally suffer from dunning kruger syndrome, their ego is laughably inflated and they have no actual experience. Their lack of respect and admiration for what better artists have done before them means that they have bad taste and no passion for their craft and their fear and aversion of learning (and stealing) from those great artists means their work will always be on a very low level.

Beginners are simply overrating the importance of originality. There's a reason why you can group virtually any good story into one of 7 story archetypes. Every story has already been told, it's all about HOW you will tell yours.

Thanks man, needs a "down" and a little more refining but I appreciate the compliment. That .gif is kind of old by now...I'd since set the animation aside to try and build up my figure drawing and anatomy "vocab" but I do wonder if bouncing from subject to subject is holding me back after all.

I really need to study perspective, do more gesture/figure drawing etc. There's just so much to learn to be proficient in any given subject with art, I envy the people who've either already long since put their work in or to whom this stuff has perhaps come more intuitively.

Unironically RP and write fanfiction.

RPing is great because you learn to expand what you write in small chunks (especially if you have a minimum word limit). At first you write nonsense to fill up the wordcount. But over time you think of ways to better convey your character's thoughts and motivations. That in turn makes you unconsciously consider nuances that otherwise may have not been there.

Fanfiction (or doujins if you're arting) is babby's writing test ground. You get to play with plots you would otherwise wouldn't do anything with. And the fact that it contains characters other people already know and care about means you'll get feedback (which will hopefully motivate you to keep going).

Figure out the tone you want to set and roll with it. Flowery word mush is retarded unless your characters are pretentious know-it-alls. Constant short choppy prose during dull moments makes your characters seem aloof or adds tension where it doesn't need to be. But your gut is the end-all, so tinker with it until you're (mostly) satisfied.

>> No.3580552

>>3571561
Like others have said, this mindset will make it so you don't get anything done. Also it's retarded.

People like things because they're well-executed. No thing is going to keep a consumer's attention forever, but you CAN make them interested with a thought-out concept. It doesn't even need to be original. Just slap together things you like and make it cohesive. It's not hard.

A creator shouldn't think "Why would I do X when Y already exists?" No one's going to only play Shantae or only read One Piece until the day they die. Creators should instead think "What makes A, B, and C so well-liked and what do I want to incorporate into MY product?" because you want to attract the crowds that like A, B, and C. You're not aiming to replace - just exist alongside.

You seem the type of person that loves talking about their project and ambition. Don't revel too much thinking about how great it will be, because it will probably not meet your expectations, or, more likely, never become a feasable product in first place due to your perfectionism.

The longer you postpone the project, the more you will change parts of it, and once you feel like your art is finally good enough you may notice the writing needs revision and vice versa. Just start your project already. Every second high schooler thinks of his fantasy epic as their Magnum Opus and those few that actually get published are rarely the author's best work.

For all your bragging you seem still inexperienced or at least naive. It's good to be enthusiastic and I don't mean to degrade or disrespect you and your project; It's just something I heard over and over again. Especially with the fear someone would steal your idea/pitch. First of all it's probably not as great as you think. Secondly, it shows you have no confidence in your execution if you rely so heavily on a gimmick. Ideas are the cheapest and easiest aspect of a project; It's not the idea, but what you make of it and how you sell it. People can steal your pitch, but not your storytelling, neither the intricacies of your characters and world. If you're afraid someone would be able to make a better product than you with the same idea, you should probably take a moment to realize why you feel that way.

That said, I really hope you'll be successful and wish you the best of luck. Last tip: If you're a good writer, but bad artist - just get an artist and the project started!

I wanna make my own scifi universe.
I grew up on Star Trek & Babylon 5. Both of which I rewatch yearly. Just creating all different species, their ships, homeworlds, the galaxy, all that shit
I haven't really done anything for it drawing wise, a fair amount writing stuff down though with the occassional ship sketch or alium face.
