>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>Where do I go to learn to study Anime?
Great news! We have an approved anime study general. Just ctrl + f anime study in the catalog and you'll find it. Other than that, check the resources below.

I really like your lines, but your shading has all sorts of random values that make for something really inconsistent. If I were you, I would lay in my areas of shadow and light with two flat values and start adding transitions afterwards *while* staying within those values.

Also, figure out a better way to shade than with scribbles of a hard round brush, the way you do it now just introduces meaningless noise without looking pleasing.

Keep in mind there's two separate objectives you should work on. The first is getting technically accurate shading (properly separating your values in a non-confusing way, basically shadow-or-light). The second is getting aesthetically pleasing shading. You mustn't forget these two issues aren't interlinked, but two separate skills you can (and should) work on individually.

girl on the right has the collar bone too disconnected and far lower than it should be, making it look very vacant, also her limbs are too noodly.
same thing for the top one on the left, and for that angle theres 2 much neck showing. bottom 2 are ok, proportions are accurate. kinda feel like were seeing 2 much her face for that pose tho, for the girl on the left

>> No.3562886

>>3562880
not op but nigger what are you talking about? interlinked what??? speak in layman's terms boi and not everything has to have a shadow, atleast nothing prominent, and the only shadows you would need to worry about said poses is a cast shadow, otherwise the only other shadows you would worry about is very subtle for forms.

All I'm saying is he can have technically correct shading that follows fundamentals while using simple, ugly round brushes with a hard outline. And conversely, he can have some very fancy transitions and blending but completely fucked forms and values.
It helps to treat both of these problems separately as they each require their own solution to fix.

Though the green graphic sticks out like a sore thumb - try breaking it up like in pic, or maybe tweak the color.

You could simplify the torso shape to be more compact. Try omitting the ribcage completely when sketching chibis and see how that goes. Also less defined, stumpier arms and legs look more cute imo.

Gotta be honest with you mate, your first try is makes for a much stronger image. The pose is less dynamic and balanced, the foreshortening makes the silhouette a bit harder to read and the screentones don't integrate too well in the style - in manga they're used to simulate light and different materials, which you're already doing with color.

Don't get me wrong, I think the images are great and you should use them both, just be mindful about your decision making

Also, this first image proportions are all over the place, arms too long and head too big, her kind looks like a toddler, what it's not my intention for this image.

In the second one I tried new things, stuff I want to do for sometime but never get around to do it.

Actually I should be studyng something instead of drawing buttnaked lolis in armors, so at least I have to experiment a little so I don't just lose important drawing time fucking around.

That's entirely dependent on how much time you're willing to put into it, your ability to problem solve, identify the problems in your drawings and having the right mindset, especially if you're self taught.

For me it's been about 6 years of taking drawing seriously with multiple breaks in between but i didn't start posting until about 2 years ago.

I still hang out here cause i like giving advice to people genuinely trying to get better and getting opinions but i know how to distinguish between bait and actual criticism.

If you're just starting out this is absolutely not the place to get better tho, cause you're just gonna get called shit with no real explanation. I don't know what to reccomend to get better in general but I answer everything in my page if you ever have a doubt on how to do something or get better at a topic in particular.

algo remember that most people only post their best works in their personal page, i still practice almost everyday and most of that looks like shit but you don't see that side when browsing it unless that person makes it a point to show every step of the way.

Either your art wasn't garbage back then, or you colored a famous artist's piece, or you already had a following and shared the link to your newly created pixiv back then. Or maybe you managed to surf on some Hatarku-tier hype. I have a senpai who has been drawing traditionally since 2 years before I started and has a gallery with watchers on deviantart + participates in a small conference + was posted on danbooru several times (one of coloring works I did was posted too, desu). He gained followers at a 1.5–2 times slower pace than me, getting to 100 in 1.5 years, though he usually draws in monochrome, posts rarely, and barely knows how to market himself despite his job.

Anon, try drawing from life. Slow down and actually try to relate what you see from a front view from other views (like a side view).
Is part of the body coming towards you? Is it going backwards? Does it bear resemblence to something else that is easy to remember (eg. necks can be remembered looking sort of like coar hangers). Asking yourself questions and observing might solve this problem.

still a few things to clean up an fix on the helmet like the ear disks/head strip thing/brain crystal whatever, gotta clean up the flats on the shoulder pads, maybe add a bit to the legs/feet cause they feel p barren compared to everything else at the moment, fix parts of the chest piece maybe (unless doing so fucks up the flow cause flow > perfect perspective) an of course that thumb still needs to be corrected, gotta add the lil groove to the underwear too. also wanna either add some kinda background or maybe just someone like zero behind x doin some other cool thing. oooh, also wanna maybe have x shooting a charged shot or somethin maybe, decisions decisions

The saturated colors in the background, middle ground and foreground make it look super flat, and the invariance of line weight make it hard to determine scale. It's hard to tell if the sword and mushrooms are giant, or just extremely close to the camera. The same problem happens with the pyramids in the back.
Try thickening the line weight on the foreground elements, thinning in the background elements and desaturating the distant back.
Cool subject matter. It reminds me of an Adventure Time episode. It feels like you have a narrative here. Can you tell us about it?

I mean it looks horrible in style but thats subjective.
Im not that well versed in anatomy especially of the arm but it looks okay i think, ggreatly exagerated but okay. What bugs me is the area around his stomach, oblique rib cage area but thats how it looks like in Baki style. Also someone thise ripped should have his serratus magnus showing I guess. The throat neck area looks best imo.
Overall you should copy Bakis style too much, look into anatomy a little bit on your own so that you arent just a less experienced clone.

I drew it in celebration of the new 2018 series starting. Its been over 2 decades since we got a new adaptation.
I think Itagaki has a pretty strong understanding of anatomy, and its his stylistic choice to dramatize aspects of the body that way. However; this is not how I typically draw anatomy. I had to resist some natural inclinations when doing that sketch. Detailing the serratus muscle was one such thing. I also gave Yuujiro an additional 2 pecs than hes normally depicted as having.

No.
It sort of actually hurts to look at, you should invest more time in learning how to draw real people. Also, the chairs in the background are warped because the backs of the chairs aren't drawn with depth correctly and the curves you used to draw the rounder parts of the chairs look faked because you didn't bother to place those curves in perspective.
>>3567981
Bruh, I was poking fun at you because I thought it was funny that you used the term "hyper realistic" for an anime tiddy drawing. The funny thing is, I actually still kinda like that drawing's aesthetic, it's just that there are some issues that need to be addressed...I mean just look at her fucking neck. The woman in the drawing seems to be facing us with around eye level and slightly turning away but yet for some reason you didn't draw any trapeziums muscles connecting her stick neck to the ends of her collar bones. Also, that arm on the left (her right) is extremely stiff and unnatural as the outer contour is drawn with an almost straight line.

Then, I'd go and get the general color palette off some color picking site for the base image. Pick a color or two and do some overlay layers to let the character blend in some more.
I'd also do a little bit of perspective blur on the characters right arm and leg. Considering it's the edge of the photo and the camera was more focused on the middle left on the rocks. Play around with it and see what works. I'd blur (not a general blur with a blur tool, do a focal blur) more than just those limbs, but eh. Test things out.

If that all makes sense? I'd also add more rippling to the water where the character is stepping.

Better?
I personally would have done the shading a bit differently, but I'm not one to pick at art styles.
The shading should be harder for the character's shadow in the water. Not a perfect, clean one, but enough that they have actual presence and affect on the world.
I'd adjust the shading on the head and I feel the colors you use on the character are a bit too bright in general. Since the rest of the image feels pale.
I'd also do some slight color to the line art so they blend in a bit more.
Definitely better than the last time at least.

Is it that you feel the way I did the shading doesn't work for the piece or is it just a stylistic thing?
And I'll try to blend things in a bit better. I wasn't too sure how much of a reflection he would have at that angle.

>> No.3569423

>>3569402
I think it's just that your shading looks blurred/airbrushed at the edges and you just didn't properly do it for that sort of shading. I would have stuck with hard cel shading. I also would have made sure to use a dark blue or green for the shading. I think you went a bit too dark though.
The shading also isn't done properly in certain spots based on where the lightsource is.

It's not really him having a reflection persay, but he just needs to cast more of a shadow in the water. Also keep in mind water is reflective and, closer to the water's surface, would actually be brighter shading, if not a highlight.

oh giraffe neck was intentional lol. I will probably tone it down a little though. And the left side fingers are a problem, but I also have issues with the right side one too. I mean, eventually I'll try and mash together a reference image probably, but doesn't hurt to ask.

I hope you don't hate me too much, but I'm gonna stick with how I did the shading just because I think I prefer the way it looks. I tried to doing more clean lines with the shading but it just wasn't really doing it for me in the same way. I tried using more blue and green tones into the shading, though, and added more to the reflection and shadow.

This looks a LOT better than you originally did though. You softened things up and everything blends a lot more. I think the lighting makes the character look a bit off? But really, it's looking great. With more practice, you an get really good at pieces like this. I believe in you anon!
>Kind of glad someone else pointed out some anatomy problems
>Meant to call them out but I spaced it
I'd suggest making the head smaller. I get the whole anime = big head thing, but it's a little too big imo. Especially if you want the character to fit better into our reality.

Add some more water droplets to his legs. Unless he is JUST NOW getting into the water, it would make it look more natural to have at least some water splashed onto his calf.

Does he have a mustache? His upper lip stands out and doesn't look too great. You could color the line work of his upper lip a little so it doesn't stand out as much? But I'd probably remove it entirely.

Gahh, thank you so much! I really super appreciate all that!!
Can I ask specifically which part about the lighting? The blue-is shading on the back or the more normal skin tone around the edges?
And yeah, looking at his head I kinda feel like all that really makes it big is just that his hair is absolutely gigantic. His face and head shape itself seem pretty tiny by comparison, so I might just try scaling down the hair a tad. Thank you so much for all your help so far!

>>3570400
The idea actually was that he was just walking into the water, so I think I'll probably keep his legs the way they are. Do you find it more distracting that the water isn't there than if it were?

Haha, the idea behind that was that it was just a lip line. I never looked at it like a mustache until now. I'll probably remove that because I'm pretty sure I can't unsee it now. Thanks for the heads up!

Hm.. It's hard to really pinpoint? I think there are just some bits of lighting that could be softer or removed maybe? It just feels.. Off?
It's clearly a sunny day, but it's not too bright. I think maybe how strong the shadow is in comparison to the lighting (not the water highlights) makes it seem like the lighting is stronger than it is?
Like.. Between the legs. You have lighting at the right back of his left leg, but that would imply there's a gap. So his right leg should also have some lighting on the left? Not strong lighting, but enough to properly signify there's a gap there.
I just feel the lighting around the edges could use a little more thought maybe? I really just woke up, so take this with a grain of salt.

>>3569901
(actually, giving you a (you) now because why not, you don't have to respond)

Hey thread, does the bruising on her neck look okay? I want it to look relatively realistic. I think I should maybe add more yellows and greens, but I'm not sure

It's probably just me being picky. Maybe just add some water build-up near the front of his left foot. Since he's moving forwards, the water would rise a little with his foot. The lack of droplets is fine.

You're drawings are extremely stiff. Before moving on I think you need to crack down on your base drawing habits and learn to loosen up a bit. Try doing more gesture drawings or times illustrations. I can see a lot of chicken scratching in your lines which is never good.
The posing also needs more work. While I see what you're going for with all of them, they aren't being conveyed as clearly as they could be, and they're all extremely stiff. This might be largely a result of your drawing ability, so I'd say to try and improve upon how you draw and as well as your anatomy skills before moving onto how to create poses and scenes.
Hope that helps a bit, and I hope I haven't sounded too negative or anything. Keep on trucking, nobody is ever done improving! Just gotta keep at it!
