I don't think it's that common but it's part of the ambient occlusion technique. You're supposed to put flat colors on a different layer and the shading and highlights on multiply/overlay. The drawback is the painting ends up looking lifeless due to the gray shading. So you have to add quite a few extra layers to adjust it.
