Me? I always "knew" how to render, actually most of my old drawing from when I was a teenager looks like polished turds because my lake of fundamentals. I learned by listening for the most adivices I would recieve in imageboards. they can be really helpful because rendering cares more about technique, different from drawing that can be really heavy on actual knowledge, like anatomy, proportions, stylization and all this crap. The worst part of rendering is understand how light works and don't fuck up the colors, and that's easy in comparison

First time I color anything, I tried really hard but I can't shake the feeling the colors are off (not compared to the ref just in general) because I hand picked them and I don't know a shit about complementary colors, color theory, and all that jazz i only know by name

I think you should try two thing make the upper lip a little bit darker (or just make the lower one lighter) this is to make the lightning more uniform also put some highlights in the lower lip too.

On another note try another hue for the eyeball instead of the yellowish one try something blue-ish

When I'm sketching I try to keep it at 100%, sometimes go 44.5%(my tablets "actual photo size" setting") if I'm drawing something lorge.
Although when I'm doing lineart I tend to go 150% or 200% because the input accuracy of my Surface on CSP is shit and that tends to be fixed by zooming in.

i've been uploading short webcomics for awhile. and a few of my friends keep pointing out that my characters are overall not appealing, or even outright ugly.
i'm ready to agree that my characters are indeed ugly. but problem is that sadly i don't see them as ugly. i'm not saying they are god tier animu chan, but... well it looks quite okay to me.

The 2 lines you use to show noses sometimes look ugly and make it look like they have voldemort noses. You should check out another way of doing that or just making them smaller. Also i dont know why the nose looks the way you drew it on the top right, like you are looking at it from the top so why are we seeing his nostrills? That one is the worst offender on that collage. Sounds like you've been infected by the tumblr virus. In most shots, you accentuate the already big chins and probably even worse the pig nose (especially clear in the 2 lowermost shots and the ones on the left in the middle row) absolutely kills any beauty or cuteness your characters might have had. Potato-like ears don't really help either, same for the hobo clothes they seem to be wearing. The way the hair is simplified is also unappealing (shapes are too blocky/lack details).

That said who are you trying to appeal to? If you're not going for the anime crowd, then this looks like perfect Tumblr bait to my weeb eyes.

looks like warts on the face. make inside of ear more than just a tiny swirl else it looks like just a meaty bun. too much sidemouth and a mouth that gets too wide in general. the eyebrows are studdy and obnoxious in my opinion and i think the expressions show well without them forced from behind the bangs. faces are very round and i dont like the red ones hairstyle or clumpy hair at all. you could make an image with a dot pattern so you get consistent freckle placement, warping/cropping the image to fit the angle

I'm not quite sure where you want to stand. As you can see from some of the other replies there's quite a few people who probably are honest about liking your style (and as I said before it looks perfect Tumblr). Why do you want it to be more anime if you yourself are ok with your characters being ugly (at times. Most of the ones here >>3551823 look much better)?
Anyways I kawaii uguu'd the two shots which seemed most uncute to me. I didn't know if it was supposed to be male or female so it's a trap now. Since I had no context I probably changed its emotions somewhat. While I tried to be kind of faithful (big eyebrows kind of sidemouth etc.) I don't think much is left of the original style. I don't think much can be left if cuteness is the destination.

But again I don't think this is what you want. Maybe it's what your friends want. They are probably still virus-free.

what i tried to emulate is somewhat generic anime faces (pic related). but i must admit i didn't really studied about it... because it looks nothing like it. i didn't want to be an imposter of someone else so i put 'some' of my donut steel style but it went to far from my intention.
eventually i must overcome the similarity from tumblr because i don't want potential misleading attention from that particular audience (because it may seem like that i intentionally directed my art to be tumblr art). again this webcomics is my first try so i really don't care about my style this early. i don't need to hold my artistic ground for no reason. that's why i said i will dig animu styles.

i mean, they're fine as-is. the red haired girl is less conventionally attractive, but that's not a bad thing. if you want to make her more kawaii uguu, here are some details that cutesy faces usually share:
>larger irises
>simplified nose
>carefully placed facial markings, if any exist

the fang is already cute, so always show it off. i stylized the shot where the fang would normally not show. now it's a little point in the lip.
the eyebrows showing through the hair is purely personal taste, but since this character has pretty thick-looking hair, i hid those brows under it.

again, you'd be fine not making any changes at all. but i hope you find something you're happy with.

Dark tones of blue or even purple to begin with. You have to understand that black is a neutral tone who kills others colors for being to dead and strong.Colors interact with each other and change based on each other, you can play around with this ideia to creato more mood pieces or even more contranst and dark places them using black, that only make other color ugly and dead af, you just have to have the basics in color theory and study a little bit of the color wheel to get the basics of it.
