Yeah, it's all about focused practice.

I have a friend who draws way more then I ever do, but he never studies anatomy or does hand studies or anything. He just draws the same standing anime girl with a gradient background for 6 years. He's asked how I improve and I try to help him, but he just dosen't ever practice drawing stuff he's bad at. Instead he just complains about how he's not getting better and it's not fair that I do, cause I don't draw as much as him.

He's going to art school soon though, so I hope some teacher can knock some sense into him.

Try to draw above your ability. Dunning Kruger and generally overistimating my own abilities lead me to try things I'd probably avoid now out of fear of dissapointment. What's really important is being able to recognize good art, and stay objective about your own. When something looks bad, try to fix it, and counter to what a lot of people say compare yourself to the artists you'd like to be like, no matter the skill gap. Overextending like this can lead to a lot of small epiphanies about how to do things that really can't be put into words well. another helpful thing is to surround yourself with the best art you can find and avoid the bad stuff as best you can. I draw better after spending all day looking at stuff by my favorite artists because it leaves an imprint of "good" art in my head, even if I don't understand what's good about it. Bad or even mediocre art can be dangerous for the same reason, especially when nothing about it stands out, because it makes me doubt my own abilities when I can't think of a way to make it look good.

Keep at it man, you can’t give up now. I know how you feel since I’m in a similar boat but it’d be such a waste to just throw away all the skill you’ve built up over the years. I’d say take some time off, reassess your goals and then when you feel up to it, dive back in. Focus on what it is that you actually want to learn and what it is that you actually want to be drawing and only draw that. Do some studies along the way when you’re feeling lost but don’t let studies be the only thing you draw. Instead use them to supplement the fun stuff you want to do. You’ve come to far to give up now lad.

I agree with this. There's a quality known as appeal that the left image was more in tune with than the right image despite the artist developing some technical chops. Intermediate artists have a tendency to bulldoze everything in the pursuit of technical improvement. Some work that lacks fundamentals still manages to have a high appeal factor. It's all related to visual communication and that's the problem with the right one, it doesn't communicate a lot. The real struggle is to make an image add up to more than the sum of its parts, which is why technical skill itself isn't the deciding factor when it comes to what work will resonate with people.

What people fail to realize is that there are a lot of intangible aspects of art that can't necessarily be quantified, which is why posters on /ic/ are so hung up on technical improvement through grinding (and then wonder why they struggle with art block). But point this out and they'll call you a crab for challenging their worldview.

i don't like the 8-10 year improvement pictures.
comparing 2018 with when you first started makes it seem like you're making huge progress, but most people here seem to completely ignore progression on a technical level once they hit that "meh" or "alright" tier, and have been stagnating for the past 2-3 years despite making small polishes to what they already knew.

grinding from "complete piece of shit" to "meh" is very easy, maybe it just took a year or two to get used to things, but "meh" to "good" is probably the steepest progress most people will never make, because objective progress is laborious and it can easily be sugar coated with stylization.

You need to worry about your volumes and shapes before worrying about rendering. Take the clothing for example. The creases aren't 3D volumes on your paintings, they're just highlights and shadows randomly placed to loosely look like the real thing. Build structure.

Don't be discouraged, your work is good, and if you give up now you might regret it later. Slow and steady is better than no progress at all

Nor should you be. Your facial anatomy is better, but not by that much, and the more detailed rendering makes the flaws stand out more. The eyes look like flat decals, and the nose bridge is just a blur for some reason. There's no expression, or rather there's only an expression on half the face. The left side of the face looks thoughtful, and the right side looks dead.
And your gray values somehow got worse, which I didn't even know could happen. The 2012 version looks less bland thanks to the higher contrast alone. The whites are brighter and the blacks darker.

I guess I'm just tired of the lack of consistency with my work. Sometimes I'm pleased with what I'm working on, and others I'm repulsed. There is a noticeable variation of skill level throughout all my work, where sometimes I get lucky and do something right, and other times it looks like I've hardly made any progress at all. Consequently, I'm losing motivation to keep pursuing art even as a hobby. I'm upset that I'm as old as I am and don't have the body of artwork that I want. I also can't stop comparing myself to way more talented artists who seem to have it together. You'd think I'd grow out of this at some point.

As a beginner I don't know what to say to that simply because I am too unskilled to know
I also felt those things at times. The only solution seems to be try as hard as you can not to be upset by it. I think this is starting to work after a few weeks even if I still have a few moments I get upset here and there.
I'm not sure how old you are but I don't think it matters anyway, just forget about age and all that crap that only serves to make you worry about having wasted time or whatever.
I am also in a little phase where I feel either disappointed or apathetic towards my imagination work, I am pushing through though, one thing that perhaps will help is trying something new, to relax a little bit while still creating something, so you can go back fresh later. Recently I was really considering trying other styles or even 3d art because of that
In the end I think it comes down to just accepting on the journey to being good you have to make thousands of bad drawings, the best thing you can do is stop worrying about results and enjoy the process as much as you can, also consider that every artist you think is amazing had to do that and that the work they do post online that you see is their absolute best
Sorry for the confused post I can't word my shit properly but I hope I got my points across

Nice progress!

Wings actually works like weird arms with feathers on them.
So try and think "arm" when you draw them.

And usually you only have a couple of layers of feathers, where the ones furthest out is the largest. Almost like you've done. But with less layers.

OK, let's see.

In the first quarter of 2018 I had mostly been training in draftsmanship, producing a considerable amount of sketches and linearts. This May I figured out a coloring method that's most satisfactory for me and, after a long trip where I had to temporarily switch to drawing with pixels on my smartphone and paper, so far has been experimenting with it. The first pictures using it (especially that rope pic from July) received exceptional amounts of positive reactions, but thereafter they have subsided. This may or may not be related to my going from (using the monochrome layer as a base and adding more shadows in multiply mode on top of it) to (doing almost all of the shading on the not-so-monochrome-by-now layer with considerably more contrast than before, except crevice/darkest shadows and highlights).
