huge influence on chumbun actually, especially his early work.
the way i look at his pictures is that like, there's a realistic portrait in there, sort of behind the paint. so like there's like a really strong sense of paint and the brush on canvas and everything, and that somehow emphases the realness of the sitter even though it's counter-intuitive. pretty subjective stuff tho, i'll admit.

To me it looks as though he has peeled back the figure to release a specter of disillusionment and longing. There's so much confidence in these smudged forms that just look so right.
From a more technical standpoint his compositions are dynamic, the mark is expressive in materiality yet rudimentary in form, and his colors are incredible. I could go on he's one of my favorites
I know what you mean though some of his pieces I'll just look at and think, that looks like a roblox avatar are you kidding, and yet still he finds a way to convince me

Great responses. Thanks.

I guess I can see this stuff in his paintings. It's like he's looking for the essences behind elements of figuration, and he has to emphasise the fact that he is using brush strokes to eliminate any sort of attempt at illusion, because that would be counter to finding truth.

He appears to put all of his creative energy into finding deep, hidden visual truths in a figure, things that can't be easily expressed, but that, with a lot of trial and error, he can find a way to describe using paint strokes. His work appears to straddle the abstract and the figurative.

frank was an angry recluse. his paintings are a reaction to what was going on in the art world when he was making them. you can't isolate them. you mention you can look at his work from a "technical standpoint" but that is false because there is nothing technical about his work when you look at his intent, process, and final results. if he was to belong to a movement which he doesnt, he is a continuation of the american fauvist movement which is still going strong and I would say the dominant painting trend in NYC art galleries. remember that les fauves means "the wildcats" not "artist who favored color over form." it's also disingenuous to say his colors are "incredible" when even a cursory viewing of his paintings shows a limited range and facility. imo he was deliberately using mud and making his paintings as mindless and as ugly as he could. incredible? no. original? maybe. valuable? up for debate.

emperor's new clothes kiddo. i've studied his paintings more in depth than you and the conclusion i keep coming to no matter which way i interpret them is that he was an angry recluse and he was deliberately trying to accelerate the rate of badness in paintings so as to draw attention to how aesthetically and morally corrupt the art world was, is, and will continue to be until you people pull sotheby's cock out of your mouth and open your fucking eyes.

there is nothing incredible about the relationships. you're rationalizing because you were told he was a great painter by people who have more authority, clout, and money than you.

i dont care what you read in a book written by some moron. again, pull your head out of your ass for a moment and try to think independently. look at his paintings along side all other paintings that were being made during that time. see who his friends were. look at the paintings he looked at. don't just obediently slop up whatever the critics and art historians and christies shills tell you what to believe. try to think critically. i know its easier to just accept authority on its face but try.

>De Kooning strongly opposed the restrictions imposed by naming movements

art historians regularly classify him as the leader of the abstract expressionist movement, when he rejected it. his paintings are also mischaracterized by art historians who typically have no eye for composition. they see a painting like this and use words like "vigorous" when in reality the composition is actually quite tame.

Auerbach is quite the oddball sure, But a reactionary to the art world at the time? I don't think so. To me, he seems as though he had his own metrics of quality and honed them over time internally. Sure he thought the art world was greatly flawed but he quietly persisted despite that. He was a recluse out of need not spite.
He belonged to a movement insofar as he helped bring back figuration along with his contemporaries. The movement is coincidental of course, but still relevant.
Calling him a Fauvist though is pretty philistine, just as much so as calling them mindless, or ugly. There is a truth to the figures he paints, they are highly considered. You can get a hint at this by looking at how he paints portraits of the same sitter over time, certain abstractions remain as translations of the sitters face to his mode of seeing from piece to piece. That's certainly not mindless. Christ he worked in charcoal for years and years to try and draw the way he intended to paint before arriving at his arguably most successful portraits.

this could go on ad nauseum. lets all just share some art

Thankful for all the varied perspectives and new works that Im seeing in here, but overall this boards pretty dead/irritating/too focused on the digital painting meme.

Of all of Guston's work, this one is probably the most interesting to me. I saw it in person and the impression it made on me is really indescribable.
It's like that with most of his work for me. He's probably one of my favorite artists and what makes him stand out even more is how much of a genuine and insightful person he seems to have been.

He's really good at speaking about the nature and strangeness of the act of painting.

I've enjoyed seeing the new works by Daniel Richter. he has said that for some of the figurative elements, he has painted from porn stills that he only looked at from the corner of his eyes (not directly, so only to get a vague impression of a body). I don't know how to translate it any better.

i've been thinking of doing something a bit like that, but with a digital method of obfuscation instead of just out the corner of the eyes

>> No.3587111

>>3587096
how exactly?
i find richters method really interesting, as the translation of that vague image you see in the corner of your eye allows for a very strange, generalized look of limbs and bodies. i wish he hadn't explained it though, because that's now what i'm always thinking of when i look at the paintings. "explaining the joke" in this case didn't do so much damage, though. the paintings are still great, esp. when you see them in person (as always).

well i tend to experiment but i'm thinking of zooming in a lot and using sharpen/blur cycles to find different edges other than the obvious ones, crush midtones, muck with the contrast, stuff like that, nothing too fancy or automated.

don't think you understand what i mean
this is trad painting using digital stuff to look for ways to mess with the figure and get something really weird but still familiar and develop it into a consistent look

so i'm not sure what that'd have to do with like concept art

i also see a lot of potential in "missusing" these tools in order to create texture. i just don't see it being used that way anywhere.

>between that and the canvas
so you want to transfer that digital edit on canvas as the finished work?
i guess i need to see an actual example to understand what you mean. it's always very vague to explain these things compared to actually seeing it being done.

>> No.3587150

>>3587146
no, there's the whole traditional part to go, the filtered thing is like 1/4 of the creative part ( or like 1% in terms of time), finished paintings would look completely different but have ideas that come from the filters churning up the figures

i have developed a method of my own and have done a few paintings in that fashion. it has worked out great for me. (it involves mostly analogue steps and only one step of digital editing). not really interested in posting them here for obvious reasons.
