>looking to buy some art books
>all the highly recommended ones are half fucking novels
So how important is theory to practice? I mean, i just want to know proportions and how to do some textures.

>I don't know anything
>but I will tell you what I need in order to learn and I will complain that so many things try to teach the same fundamental concepts but I don't want the concepts I want proportions I want brushes the brush can't you see it's the brush are you blind it's the fucking BRUSH I'm asking about

suck it up and realize that you're ignorant and that you really need to learn those fucking fundamentals and that the "novels" are trying to tell you why that shit is so goddamn important damn

most people i know who are really good just rely on theory and rarely physically study anything besides like anatomy and perspective.
They do a lot of imaginative work with photo reference, and autistically analyze other artists work to learn everything else.

Well the text will help you understand the images and execute the exercises in the book better, or at least they are supposed to. Some artists can't write to save their life, so text isn't really valuable.

But like this anon said, books are mean't to be read. Maybe videos will be more up your alley. Either free, or paid videos.

Not very. An art book that shows you a visual demonstration of how to apply technique is infinitely more valuable than one that endlessly prattles on about it.

I recommend Michael Hampton for anatomy, James Gurney for painting.

Personally I think theory is very valuable. Just read it outside of practice time so you can't use it to procrastinate. You won't understand most of it but eventually with practice you will suddenly get what those words meant and that feeling is invaluable.

theory is important if you want to do work with a sound theoretical basis, you don't need it for anime girls.

plus whatever is in those how to draw books isn't theory, it's filler so the book looks substantial enough to be worth the asking price.
