I've once again skimmed "...for all its worth" and I don't see anything useful besides advice on how to preparing yourself for commercial applications. The technical stuff would fill 15 minutes of a youtube tutorial.

The biggest red flag that an /ic/ user is an absolute fucking moron is this:

They think the whole world of ALL professional art revolves around
>sci-fi / fantasy illustration
>concept art
>furry porn
>sexy digital painting pin-ups of attractive women
>Porn patreons
>fast-food style commission charts on DA & Tumblr, drawing peoples "OC"

All of which people lump together and label it 'the industry'. And that's it. There are hordes of people here who believe these are the ONLY options available for making a living with your art (specifically 2D drawing). They simply cannot accept the fact that you can be a freelance illustrator that doesn't do any of the above, let alone any other type of art / medium. And peoples attitude here is not a matter of being ignorant of other types of opportunities (though many are), or simply having a preference for this type of work - it's an outright denial that if you're not doing one of the above, then you're somehow not a real artist.

It's like saying you're a musician and not knowing the names of bands you like. Not really an issue here and there, but not knowing who you like is weird. Maybe my perception is skewed by experience.

I went to a small, private liberal arts college where there were a number of young women who were fine arts majors. Most of them said they liked art but could barely name people they just heard about in art history. They liked the idea of being an artist but couldn't tell you shit about art and all their shit looked like shit. I doubt they looked at art or had even been inside a museum.

I shitpost with more doujin artists on twitter, in broken engrish and memecomics about boners, than famous artists they could name as part of their major. Some of them were actually really cool and knew their shit, but it's a red flag when someone has been doing fine art full time for 3 years and is afraid to sketch out a quick portrait.

>>3542728
You don't have to win the gallery lottery, fine arts is a great supplemental income. Set up some fruit, hire a model, do a landscape, if you only did 200 hours of fine arts work every year you could easily have 20 sellable paintings and make $10000 being in just one decent gallery, and have plenty of time to pursue illustration and take the odd graphic design job.

At least you can name some artists though. That anon is correct, you should be able to name some current artists you follow. Those artists will be your peers, and you should also be able to discuss other artists with your peers. If you go for an interview, you may be asked about artist you like too.

>>3542724
Not to mention there are art jobs that do not revolve around drawing. Things like woodworking, blacksmith, interior design, dog grooming, floral design, cake artist, etc.

>>3542719
But like >>3542724 mentioned, it could be anything. Toy design, technical design (medical diagrams, instruction manuals), web design, product design, packaging, fashion design, and the list goes on.

No, I've had to work hard for my money. I have a day job in customer service and currently do art on the side.

I used to be a dog groomer and made $50,000 a year (could have made a lot more). It was very much an artistic job, but my body couldn't handle it anymore. And even as a dog groomer it was useful to know the names of other successful groomers and interact with them.

My point was that there are many art fields that you could be happy in.

Dog grooming is a job that you can move almost anywhere and still have a job. I have met groomers from all over the world. I live in the US though. Even in my small city there are over 15 dog grooming shops. The pet industry is growing pretty fast.

I understand that dog grooming is a privilege, but my point still stands. The art world is vast, and there are many artists all around you.
