Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

what the fuck guys.

>> No.3534811

Also I'll start with a few questions about rendering/values
When studying values, does the eyedropper impair my progress in recognizing values by eyeballing?
Do I need to never use lines in such studies to learn edge control even if my goal is to mix lineart and paint?
Is studying values of human figures something I should keep for later because of it's complexity?

yep, don't use the eyedropper basically ever. if you want to use it right at the start to make up a palette that's fine, but aside from that it's bad for you.

you can use lines whenever you like, you can especially do a drawing to paint over. it's no use getting yourself all confused trying to paint up from scratch when you're trying to learn something specific like edges. if you want to learn to paint up from scratch, that's when you paint up from scratch.

no, studying values on figures is fine if you feel comfortable enough to actually study the values. if you're worrying about the drawing or pose or whatever so much that you can't focus on values then you probably need more drawing practice first.

You know, sharp color contrasts, mundane items and some surreal things going on, not simply "anime"

This one took me about 26 minutes to do.
I think it may only come from whatever I'm trying to draw from imaginiation. I've no problem drawing what I see, but it's exclusive to whatever I draw from my mind that takes me so long before I get it right.
Right now I'm trying to draw two OCs hugging each other from a side view whilst lying down but I've no clear references on what that would look like, especially with particular limbs and how they would look from that angle.

In short; I can draw what I see with no problem, but not what in my head. Or at least it takes far too long to draw what's in my head.

Ok so I am a massive retard and dont understand what I am doing.
>Use krita cuz poorfag
>on desktop it looks fine
>post onto chan, still good
>later go onto phone, happen to have it saved on google photos so I can show a friend later
>colors are all fucked

The same thing happens with laptop. Like between the 3 screens theres never even remotely any consistency in the same drawing. I tried researching the issue and have worked out its probably a "color management" issue, whatever that means. Even then watching vids and reading posts on how to fix it hasnt helped, as they basically all say "oh just make sure youre in sRGB since thats the default for most things"

As an example image attached was made on desktop in krita with default settings. To me it looks relatively vibrant, bright greens, some yellows, etc. But on laptop screen it looks a bit grey and washed out, and on phone it looks a bit over saturated, but more green and less yellow.

TL;DR I am a manchild and need someone to hand hold me pls help

what is pirating? just google any program and you'll find cracked version of them within minutes

anyways that's due to color temperature and calibration being different between devices

try calibrating your computer to match your phone, or vice versa

i got a new computer in december and the screen is shit, i took multiple calibrations to even match my phones screen and even then it can't physically reproduce yellow and the saturation correctly, i eventually adjusted to it but it's still an occasional annoyance.

TLDR calibrate your screens colors

Idk about you but personally if I go into a work without a clear vision in my mind of what the image is supposed to be the work will drag on and often times I will be several sessions into it and realize that the pose is weak or I missed the mark somehow.

My advice is if you are feeling around for a form and unsure of what to sketch then keep it quick and don't get attached to the piece. Only go all in when you have a clear vision. Other than that there is no reason that i can figure why it takes you so long to get past construction lines

How to learn aesthetics or develop good taste?

>> No.3539622

>>3539558
Breadth and depth of experience. Ignoring aesthetic philosophy which is a bit heavy for this discussion, it boils down to distinguishing the difference between what you like and what is good and a wide range of experience. What you like v. what is good comes out of a broad range of experience where you develop more subtle preferences through the eye of others and allows you to apply it to your own experience of enjoyment. I know what a good blue suit looks like, but I would never wear one.

I'm going to butcher this because I just woke up: we cannot truly comprehend or accurately imagine that which we have not experienced. Trying new or more intense flavors actually expands the phenomenological field and changes the experience of everything already within it. Drinking a couple different truly vile, extremely bitter IPAs puts the rest in context and what once tasted like pine bark and skunk becomes fruity and floral with a hint of sweetness. Natural peanut butter makes the processed stuff come off as overly sweet, which it always was, but there was no context. The same appears to be true of art. You look at a massive range of art or start branching out into more novel and extreme music or watch a ton of french new wave and japanese period films or whatever. Your tastes expand and a scale develops organically. The National Gallery calls to you because looking at pictures doesn't cut it, you look for illustrators doing things you didn't notice before, you have to stand right in front of Wata's amp so when she drops a fat guitar brap that's louder than the space shuttle taking off you feel your organs rearrange. You jones for more intense, more subtle, more novel, more sublime. The metaphorical volume gets turned down on radio pop and 90 percent of tumblr, but the reality is that the volume was always that low, you just never knew what taking it up to 11 sounded like.

You know exactly what you want and what it's made from. You know the aesthetic formula.

What exactly is the purpose of black paint? Specifically in gouache?

Coming from watercolors, I've always made my own "blacks" by mixing primaries. To darken a color I'd use its complimentary.

Some (most) gouache is full of a lot of trash so it photographs well for commercial work and doesn't always mix a deep enough black. And illustrators use it.

It's primarily used to darken beyond what watercolor is capable of due to the yellow side of things not being anywhere near black, desaturating without having to account for mixing complements, and generally making life easier. You don't have the same level of transparency to rely on or get in the way of using it.

I've never done much with it because I've never felt like investing fully in gouache, but a good black or neutral tint can make hitting darker, less saturated colors easier, and you can mix it with burnt umber to make a van dyke brown that isn't a mystery mix. I'm seriously considering finding or mixing a good black for watercolor work because the hookshot some pigments do around the neutral with their direct complement is infuriating.

People are going to tell you learn it on your own, but I think its smart to go to college. A lot of people in the industry have some sort of education.

If you put effort into your education, you will get good fast, make connections, and be surrounded by like minded people. Keep in mind you don't have to enroll in college courses, you can just enroll in art courses in general if that is a better solution.

If you are in the US, also check out state schools for their art programs. You will often get a really good deal, and can minor/double major in another subject as a back up.

ive never drawn with loomis or construction method in all my years.

i always draw the outer lines and adjust if needed keeping in mind anatomical rules. it usually works out but i admit that sometimes i fuckup a limb and dont even notice as fast as id like to.

im not a good artist but im so far into this method that i dont think i can go back. Can i still improve doing this? do you know artists who dont follow the drawschool methods?

Put your phone down at a reasonable time, stay up until you're able to fall asleep at around 9pm and set an alarm for sometime early in the morning like 6 or 7am. Keep doing this to fix your sleep schedule, just don't touch your phone after bedtime.

Set goals that you can realistically reach each day, like "draw 10 hands" "Draw a couple buildings" "Do a landscape painting" and actually stick to that, put your phone down until you finish it if you have to. Once you're in the habit of doing any sort of drawing each day you can get into stuff like studying for an hour or two each day.

That's not gestures. You want to draw for maybe 30 seconds and your only goal is to see the movement in whatever you drew. Can you tell that the person is jumping by your 30 second attempt? Do it again. And again. And again. All with many many different poses. You dont even have to complete the movements you tried. Just keep at it. The actual time limit is optional. The rest is not. Nonetheless keep it low. None of this 2 hours, aim more 2 minutes. Once you can make the movement, use it as a base for your actual drawings. Redraw the gesture until you get the one you want and work on that. You will draw hundreds.

Most of the live drawing I've done start with shorter gesture drawings and gradually reaching longer poses: 30 second gestures for a few minutes, a few 1 minute gestures, a few 2 minute, a 5 minute, a 10 minute, and at the end a 20 minute drawing.

I personally find the best way to approach gestures is to find the main line of action, either through the ways the limbs are arranged or where the weight of the person is distributed. I also just see them as warm ups, looking at the overall pose and drawing rather than the details.

It depends on which you even want to do after college. There's no easier to learn on your own answer, it's just depends on how hard you work. A good art college will spoon feed you the right info and put you on a schedule. You'll also make friends with similar interests who can become your peers in the future.

With that said, I went to school for Illustration/Cartooning and regret not the major, but the teachers and some of the electives I chose. The graphic design program at my college is one of the best, but I have more of a passion for cartooning and learning design and typography after college gave me a greater appreciation for it. It's better to develop yourself as an artist and solidify your core values before making cynical decisions on what major to pick based on what's easier to learn yourself, the job market, etc.

When you study something, you memorize the concepts and practice them till you understand them.
For proportions, you could for example memorize things like how many heads tall is a persons arm or what's the width of the waist compared to the shoulders, and draw these proportions as you're learning them, so you learn to actually put it into practice.

Do you draw outside of studying? The point of doing a study is to apply it to something you actually want to draw.

The trick with newsprint is that it's only good for conté and charcoal. Pencil doesn't pop and it will destroy pens. It's like working with toned paper and takes white crayon pretty well some days. Newsprint paper is a very thin paper. It's good for sketching and the like, but not the best for inking, as the ink tends to soak in and bleed easier, the paper degrades quicker, and it is, all in all, not a terribly good paper. However, it's fairly cheap in comparison to photocopier paper, and often comes in much larger sizes at cheaper or at least similar prices, so if you're using it for sketches in pencil or ballpoint I can recommend it for that. You remind me of myself a short time ago, but instead of having friends way better than me, it was my younger sibling, as a kid i was so frustrated that i stopped drawing many times. At some point you have to realize that for any skill you're learning, there will always be a million people better than you, who are younger or the same age, and a million worse who are older than you too; it's all a product of the time and effort they put into it. Ofc the numbers arent exactly that, but the point is that you're always going to see people at the skill level you want to be at. You may as well choose your goal, and reach for that instead of worrying about the others who are ahead of you, since after all, isn't one day reaching that goal your dream already? (or thats how i see it)
I like to keep old art and redraw it every once and a while, its a very relaxing experience and helps me see the improvement. But seriously, no matter what you do, there is a kid 6 years younger who is better than you at it, you can still love drawing without being the best out there.

I wish I could, but there's a point where things go from "I like the way this guy does [x thing], I'll try to incorporate that in my own work" to "this guy does everything exactly how I wish I could do it, what the fuck".

It's form, anatomy, shading, coloring, proportion, line quality, style, etc etc etc etc. It essentially amounts to a "certain feeling" in their work that I don't know how to even begin to replicate. I'd have to get good at absolutely everything, and that notion is the opposite of motivating.

>>3543784
I'm not really concerned with being the best- there are millions of artists that are better than me who don't make me feel this way, so it's not a general thing.

I guess it's a feeling of obsolescence. It's not just that they're better, but that they're making what I want to make with five time as much skill and appeal. It's terrifying to know that my work will always be a pale imitation of theirs, that I'll never get the same feeling looking at my art that I get looking at theirs.

1. There are a lot of different values in that picture.
2. If you are using photoshop, press ctrl+y and increase the saturation of your color, paint it in the same area as your original color. It will look darker, so adjust your color's brightness setting until your saturated color shows the same value as your original color.

(million person here)
Do you only get the feeling when the person is someone you know? You know, as you develop your style, you will take a different direction from the people you know. You might decide to specialize in something they don't, or follow a career in a specific field. When everyone is practicing the fundamentals, it's hard to see it, but if you really just set your end goal for the art you want yourself to make, you'll find that one day you'll be at your goal, and your art style and technique will not be comparable to other professionals because you'll have your own style and own way of making your art the most appealing to you. The issue is when your goal is to surpass someone else, which sorta seems like your attitude. Not saying thats always necessarily the worst thing ever, it just seems to be bringing you down, your goal should fill you with determination, don't make it something impossible like surpassing people who are also improving in their own direction.

On another note, there's probably not much me or anyone can say to change how you feel about looking at other peoples art, for me i just got so used to feeling jealous and helpless that it sorta stopped on its own, you really just have to accept that they will always be peers who are better, take a deep breath, and keep trying to make the best art you can make and have fun with it.

We're friends because we have the same tastes and draw a lot of the same subject matter. We want a lot of the same things out of our work, and that's also the reason why it's so difficult to avoid comparisons.

I know the art I want myself to make, the issue is that I know people who are already making that art and I can't even wrap my head around how they do it. The art that's most appealing to me isn't mine, it's theirs- and I can't have it. I don't really think of it as wanting to surpass them(I can't really imagine someone being better than them anyway). I just want to feel like my work has merit.

"Intuition" in this case simply means that you don't learn things in a way that lets you easily articulate your process. You just kinda get a feel for certain things. I'm not that way at all but I imagine there are plenty of artists who are.

Bit of clueless dumbass question but uh
Is copying a different skill from "normal" drawing?
I can't copy a face realistically nailing down the proportions 100% at all, but I have been drawing on and off for years and I'm not /beg/ tier anymore (not good or intermediate either but just saying), however I know of a girl that can copy and do a value study of a face very realistically, but she doesn't really study to git gud and I don't think she even draws aside from doing little paintings like that. If I had to guess, if she tried to make something like some stylized work, it would be beginner tier
She does art school IIRC so I think that's where she learned, a friend of mine also did art school and even though he also is not into drawing the way I am I saw one of his works now and then and he also did such things
So, yeah I'm just a bit confused what happened, do they teach you observation in art school and tell you to copy shit 1:1? Or what? I'm interested in that now that I've gotten more serious about drawing, hoping that recreating stuff like that from observation is going to improve my work from imagination

>> No.3544966

>>3544766
A good chunk of artists don't know dick about why or how they did what they did. They only thrive in an academic setting by looking at the pictures. This isn't knocking anyone, some people are analytical and good at putting things into words and teaching, others come off dumb as a brick when you ask that kind of question but can easily extrapolate from example and lay out multiple examples.

It can be infuriating when you want to hear something like "I start with angular forms for men and round them while using harder contrasts with line and value to show where the form turns sharply away from the viewer. I also keep the shape language in mind the way you would a caricature and pay attention to how the sillouette looks and interacts with surrounding negative space." Instead you get some pointing and grunts at a drawing of it.

>>3544931
You learn how to copy from life, yes. Almost every artist before 80 years ago was taught how to draw statues or do bargue plates by observation with nothing but a pencil and a lead weight on a string. It helps immensely when doing construction as you can see when your lines are almost imperceptibly off on a face. No more twisted mouths or non-euclidean noses.

>Is copying a different skill from "normal" drawing?

A significant number of artists are dyslexic or did shitty in school and drew instead. Quite a few have some degree of OCD.

My example was a bit hyperbolic, but still something I've seen. You have to figure that most art instructors have an MFA, which requires a verbal IQ of around 130 to get. That's 5 percent of the population, being generous. It's reading and writing intensive and involves vague concepts and interpreting a lot of technical drivel. The mean average person gets frustrated trying to explain how to do their own job in enough detail to replicate it.

Anon's friends may just be average people.

Start with Hugo Pratt and go from there, not the same mix of styles, but his influence on eurocomics is obvious. I don't know much about eurocomics because I'm too lazy to learn french and pirate the good ones.

It seems to be a matter of starting from the idea of heavily rendered "realism" and being able to abbreviate features down to the usual anime symbols. Then you can work in the same "style" by varying how much you draw and render.

copy the pose in three dimenions. rotate accordingly. remember that drawings are pictures of something that inevitably exists in three dimensions. you don't have to limit yourself to copying the graphic design of the drawing, you can copy the object that the drawing depicts too. this is a better way of thinking generally anyway since it frees you from the limiting nature of the modernist gaze.

How stupid, art is a performance. You don't see the hundreds of hours put into assembling the piece. The art of creating music has the same issues as the art of creating drawings. No one will see the process, just the final piece. but if the purpose of the drawing is to get you to fap to it, it should also not be off enough that people get distracted by the anatomy instead, yes? granted, this threshold is different from person to person.

Now, it takes years to get to get to the same level as your pen & drawings, might do it now and keep grinding at the same time, you'll get the hang of it, don't expect to be good tho

Just as many as you're comfortable with, do them slowly and with good form instead of going for as many as possible,
I started out with almost non at all and now a few months later i do 30 right after i get up and then 15-20 every 2 hours and 30 before going to bed. It takes a few weeks to notice big changes but overall my back and shoulders are definitely way bigger now and my posture is 1000% better.
Just keep a straight line with your legs and back during the push up and start your arms at shoulder with, eventually you'll be able to bring them closer together and do harder push up variations. And don't overdo it at first or you might snap a nerve. Just go for as many as feels right, even 2-3 realy slow push ups every 2 hours is a good start.

I don't think we are working with the same definition of a "gesture" i'm not talking about under drawings.
I'm talking about really fast sketches. You slamming all of the information down quickly, its so you only focus on the major forms. that's why i'm scribbling, cause large dark areas with an ink pen kinda suck.

Hi is there any brush like this for Clip Studio?

I really like the look of it and i want it. he gives it away but it's only for Photoshop so that doesn't work.

Clip Studio has sales where it goes for $25. It's an absolute steal at that price or $50 for all it does. Photoshop CC is also very reasonable. I don't pirate anymore either so I bought both. If you choose the photography plan it's PS + Lr for $10/mo. Well worth it in my mind to not worry about issues with piracy such as tablet problems, random bugs, or worrying about malware.

not him but your shadings are all over the place. try to keep to 1 direction, more compact, and use a softer medium. and frankly most of the time quick gestures don't need shading so cut that out and focus on the pose

I want to go on a journey.

I want to be friends with a crow, and travel across mountains... Crows are cute

Aside from the fact that I haven't left the house for years, how should I build up the skill to draw well enough so that I can go outside and at least sketch any beauty around me? Help me
