A lot of this looks like 30's cinema. Like John Barrymore or something.

The level of Parrish?

Get to master levels of draftsmanship. The man was incredible technically.

Then study painting and color. Parrish used a unique technique for his paintings, he was trying to emulate process color printing, but laying down pure, transparent layers of color, and mixing colors optically. He'd start with ultramarine - paint the entire painting of all of the ultramarine areas. Let it dry. Coat it with varnish, let that dry, sand it with pumice powder to a glass surface, do the next color. He'd build colors until he was done. Photos don't do his paintings justice, they glow in person, there's no color like it anywhere.
A lot of people accuse him of tracing photos, but no, he was just that good. He worked from live sources, and built sets and props in his studio.

His work is hard to find, unless there's a show, as most of it is privately owned. If you're near Massachusetts, you're in luck, there's a show at the Normal Rockwell museum in Stockbridge that has works by Parrish, Wyeth, and Rockwell, that started in June and ends in October.

So, get to work! And if you can, go see the show.
