No rules just tools if you want to learn how to draw anime you should draw anime more drawing less shitposting remember it's summer edition

This is the place for:

1. Participating in anime group studies:
>Mindfully break down the reference in various ways instead of mindlessly copying.
>Make multiple copies. It should get easier each time. If not, reevaluate your methods.
2. Posting your individual anime studies:
>They should be studies drawn with a reference or tutorial.
>Provide the reference used if you can.
3. Serious discussion about emulating anime style art:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /ALT/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Hey guys I have been doing some background work similar to making photoplates for matte painting and while doing that I discovered a menu that I hadn't realized was there in Photoshop.

At the top under image there is an adjustments tab, aside from variations which is very cool and a easy way to visualize and compare different color grading for images there is one option called hdr toning that has some options which make your work have a nice clean inked looked with some subtle screen tone thrown in.

I highly recommend it and would like to post some results I have gotten but I am at work and unable to do so.

Try it out and you will see. Also I believe there was a manben episode where the artist uses a similar technique for making the backgrounds

How do I learn to draw with contour like the japs?

>> No.3507865

I got a question about copying.
Sure, I do copy and study a lot of my fav art, but sometimes I just get so bored. It's not lack of discipline, but sometimes when I copy fav work, I just feel I learned nothing.

However, I do the enjoy the processes a lot of trial and error, drawing said character in different poses while seeing the model sheet as references. Would that be okay to do? Or is avoiding the copy processes not a good idea?

>> No.3507882

>>3507865
Do more of whatever else you gotta do so you don't get bored. The japs consider copying a form of practice and they do it a lot.

Yea, that's why I feel "guilty" for not copying when I feel like I should. I understand the important when it comes to studying a subject/style, but at times I just wanna draw whatever.

Tracing in combination with freehanding will improve your freehanding skills pretty fast. This includes using some type of proportional tool to copy an image or from life.

>>3507865
I agree with >>3507882. You should be drawing what you want along with studying what you need to in order to get better. If all you do are studies, you will struggle when it comes to actually applying them. Which you may have seen a lot of threads pop up on /ic/ about this. Creativity, is also a learned skilled that needs to be exercised.

>> No.3507974

Just how the fuck does anime work? I know the most common answer around here would be to study real life but there's shit that they do that does not happen in real life at all. Like making the farthest eye flatter and wider in 3/4th views

>> No.3508011

>>3507974
let's just study real life + traditional asian art + manga art

>> No.3508020

>>3507974
you should think of it as flattened perspective, not making eyes wider etc. flattening perspective is a very common technique historical, very common for faces where certain design elements like symmetry and expressive detail become more important than a naturalistic depiction

>> No.3508026

>>3507974
Studying from real life isn't enough. If you want to draw like a particular artist, then you have to learn from their art, regardless of the style. If you don't, then you'll come to your own conclusions and invent your own unique style. This is ideal for most artists on /ic/ but it's not what we're striving for. Never studying anime artists will only turn you into another pseudo-anime artist that you see a lot in the English-speaking realm of the internet.

So explore, experiment, and compare. Copying is just one method, but it's important to be invested in the medium so that you have an idea of what you're striving for. Find artists that you like, reverse-engineer their work, and then try on your own. It doesn't really matter how you do it. All that matters is how your drawings look in the end.

>> No.3508137

You can't rely solely on the laws of real life and expect it to be 1 for 1 as another art form. You still need to study what you want to make after learning how to do real life. So here's what you should be doing. Study real life, THEN study anime. This comes from personal experience.

so far all i've done is spent like 3 weeks tracing pictures of anime characters' faces and heads i think are cute. i draw the lines for the jaw in a choppy, crappy way and my eyelashes are just scribbly messes. i want to say its because i dont have any custom paint tool sai brushes but the truth is probably that i just suck dick.

someone in a previous thread said i should try to recreate a character's head i can draw from a different viewpoint or angle without tracing for practic, but i get discouraged when i draw a head and it looks completely retarded, so i just go back to tracing while trying to forget the fact there are 11 year olds on deviantart who draw anime way better than me.

First go read some Loomis or some other beginner tier anatomy book, practice the head construction for example, and then go trace, but don't just mindlessly trace. You're going about it wrong. Anime is just stylized realism. Learn realism and you can apply the same construction to stylized work. You think you're looking for a shortcut that'll just teach you to draw weeb characters but the reality it'll just hamper your learning process.

>> No.3517347

It's more of a morale thing than a "I want a shortcut" thing. For my own personal egotistical reasons, I want to get to a point where I can draw passably decent anime heads before I dedicate an enormous block of time to studying 3d space and perspective.

You can do the same thing in other aspects of academics. You don't need to learn how to derive the quadratic formula to know how to use it. You don't need to derive Gauss's Law from Columb's Law to know how to use it.

Yes, you'll make your math and physics professors want to cry if you don't have a clue how these things are derived, but let's not pretend they are fundamentally necessary for practical applications.

Use a construction method and guidelines. Since you are tracing, it should be even easier to come up with an accurate method you can follow since you can just overlay it on top. Start with big shapes (both 2D and 3D) and then fit smaller shapes inside that. It's best to alter someone else's construction like Steve Huston's so that reinventing everything. After that copy (without tracing) the anime heads starting with just the big shapes when you get that down focus on getting the smaller shapes in correct proportion to the big ones. Do that long enough and the proportional relationships will be clear enough in your mind that you can draw it on your own with less mistakes.

Anime is an abstraction of real life features and relies a ton on shape language.

First, you must understand what it is that you are drawing. Real life will obviously give you that.

Next, you must understand shapes and how they interplay with each other. How bigger expressive eyes give off emotion, how a rounder shape exhumes femininity, and angularity gives a sharp, manly look. How the angle of the eye lashes completely changes the personality of the character.
These things make or break an anime drawing and define the style.

nice strawman there brainlet. The difference between a mouse and a drawing tablet, is whole worlds, the difference between your brush and the brush being 3 pixels wider and having 1% more presure smoothing is fucking miniscule. It comes down to your fucking preferences you dumb retard. It would be a difference if you were talking about photoshop templates that make your brush print leaves or something but you are talking about simple pen and blend tools in sai here. If you cant utilise those then all the professional gear in the world, all the brush settings in SAI cant help you get good because you fucking suck ass if you think your stupid argument had any ground.
