IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Question:
I've been drawing for a little bit know and just started trying figure drawing. I have a decent idea of where the muscles go, but have no clue how to make any of my drawings look any bit real. When I pull up a reference I pour almost an hour into it and it still looks like a cartoon. Is this a problem with rendering or do I just need to spend more time on each piece and really try to hone in on certain details?

I think lineart is just lacking detail. They are flat and featureless, whereas sketches show a little character in that they are multiple raw lines laid on top of each other.
Also the stark lines in line art don't allow the eye to deviate from that one defined line, making any imperfections stand out, but with sketches there is larger margin or error so to speak, that covers up or blurs that error with a different line.

You're not losing anything. You're just unable to hide flaws with line art as you could in a loose sketch. Line art is like watching a porno in HD.

thanks for the feedback. i wasnt really considering how the light would bounce back to the top. would the light in the water make sense if it had the beam of light spread so that it covered where the reflection is too? i just made the beam wide enough so that it hit the tree/island the way i want it too. as for the perspective. its supposed to be a 'dome' shape so where the water meets the wall should be going back, while as you go further up, the ceiling gets 'closer' as you get to the gap where the light comes through. its all tricky because i have to go dark but not too dark and there has to be light but it cant be too light. its sooo hard

When rendering mirror-like surfaces you have to think about where your line of sight bounces instead of where the light source illuminates the surface. Your contour drawings seem like gestures, so they look more lively. While you construction based drawings incorporate an awareness for placement and direction of bodyparts yet feel more stiff. They also lack any sense for proportions. Start with a drawing like on the left then draw a stick figure on top with correct lengths for the body parts, then add volume to the stick figure.

There are a lot of approaches to start a drawing. But the first step would always be to define the space taken up by the figure. This could happen via a simple block in, a gesture, light/shadow or a prelimary contour drawing. It's important to capture the dynamic or shape of your figure, depending on what is more important in your drawing. At this point, there is still no guaranteed anatomical correctness. This is only achieved via construction. The volumeless stick figure is just the first step in this part but it still needs to follow the lines of the gesture or needs to be constrained by your contour to retain the sense of motion or the shape respectively. Note that the gesture or the contour is only preliminary and can stillbe fudged to accomodate the corrected anatomy/proportions as long as the basic line flow of the gesture is still retained.

I don't know your extent of muscle knowledge but it only really helps for figures if you know the bone structure underneath, as well as how to skin stretches over it and pinches at the joints.

Alright guys. I didnt want to start a thread for this so I will try asking here.
I am very used to Paint Tool SAI and I feel sometimes I get close to a ceiling and I am keeping myself on the same drawing/painting skills with what I have on my hands and I see many professional and good artist use Photoshop CC. I thought this could be the software so I got PSCC and tried to set it up for drawing. I still can't get used to it and I think brushes need a lot of changes as well as a tool that works like SAI's water brush mixing tool, which mixes pretty well and works for shading.

What are your opinion on this ?
Have any of you moved from SAI or similar to PS? And if you recommend PS.

People say that thoughtless drawing is bad but when I try to draw using any kind of technique it ruins my drawings and I don't want to have to use a ruler to measure everything because it's one step away from using a grid.

It's like I can't get into drawing mode when I try to use methods, I can't get that focused gesture drawing or hand wrinkles contour drawing feeling.

This picture isn't the one I drew because it was in my sketchbook but it shows my problem. The first was done kinda half using measuring the second was trying my hardest to measure and the third was not measuring and just kinda painting, while the 3rd looks the most polished I spent the longest on the 2nd by miles.

you had a nice amount of improvement between these two attempts, keep going.

my personal advice for charcoal is to not be afraid of laying down a light layer of charcoal over the whole thing, and using an eraser to pick out the lightest values. most of the stuff you learn with charcoal you learn from experimenting with it, honestly.

A problem a see here is that in the reference the background is dark while the objects are much much lighter, you should've darkened the background accordingly and used the charcoal way more sparingly in the objects themselves since they're so light.

While there can be an apparent significant difference between approaches to gesture, the difference in "style" is just superficial, different road same destination.
say for example the difference between vilppu and proko, vilppu focuses more on fluidity and volumes while proko focuses more on simplicity and accuracy, both describe the gesture competently.
Try both, study both and then incorporate the things you can work with into your own approach.
Even if you decide that you prefer a different way, there's always something you can learn from one approach, that will not be as apparent in another approach.

This is the first (excluding a few aimless sketches) drawing I've done in almost a year. I feel I've retained some skills and completely lost others. It's easy for me to see where I went wrong on this one so I can do it better next time, but in terms of more global practice, I'm not sure what I need to work on. Poses, color, certainly.

I guess my question is, is there anything about this that's just offensively bad, or would my best course of action be to just keep doing what I'm doing?

youre talking about the trees in the back right? yeah i have no idea how to do that. what exactly is wrong with the perspective? it's not exactly how i imagined it but i like it the way it is.

the problem is that you render too early
the middle one is obviously going to look wrong if you haven't figured out where one eye is and are too afraid to fuck with other eye because you spent too much time on it
get some accurate contours down first or you're going to stay stuck on the third drawing in terms of progress
you might think it's close enough but honestly ask yourself if you would fap to it and you'll see where you really are

1. check out draw 50 cars, trucks and motorcycles for the quick and easy shortcut to car drawing, it'll be fun
2. read through (I'm not saying do the exercises) drawabox to get a sense of what dynamic sketching's trying to teach you
