No, you're doing fine, if you want to improve even further though, I'd start painting with a broader value range though, In the skin especially. In addition, skin is fairly soft, I might recommend using the soft round brush to paint most of it, and using the hard round brush for details. Also make sure to use lots of warm red and orange tones in the skin, which will help the skin look more lively; as well blue eyes aren't usually that blue, they tend to be closer to a grey. Finally, adding occlusion shadows can help with making a painting look more finished- for example where the hands and breasts meets, there would a thin line of darker values around that contour, and that's because light wouldn't be able to bounce and reflect into those areas, so they would actually end up being pretty dark. In any case, keep painting and studying with the intent of learning and you'll improve.

>>3502815
It feels strange having such a child-like head on such a muscular body. Of course that's just my opinion, though.

>>3502980

I like the general idea and your rendering is very cool, but the character in red feels very stiff, I struggle with that as well though. The pose just feels awkward and unnatural, moving her right arm back might help, but if you have a mirror and a long object that resembles a sword, I would try and recreate the pose yourself and study whether it feels natural or not, and really try and understand the underlying gesture. Either way, awesome stuff, hope you finish it.

you are mistaking "more detail" for "more quality".
this is one of those less is more moments, if you can do in 10 marks what can be done better with one mark, why use 10?

also , looks as if you are going for the outline or silhouette of the portrait instead of its true forms.

understand the planes first, then draw.

you wont be able to let go of the amateurish bold outline until you comprehend this, control of edge is understanding of form.

I had written a longs ass text going into detail but refreshed by accident lol.
To sum up, her hips make no sense, theres no indication of her pelvis anywhere so it's unclear if shes turning or on profile.
If she's supposed to be doing a bit of both it's not clear enough, I like the hair but it creates a weird tangent that makes it even more unclear just how turned her body is as it covers some of her back, are we seeing this from the side or more from behind?
The part of her spine that shows near the neck indicates the latter but her hips dont follow along and instead show a full profile near the hips/butt area where just enough of the hair covers the transition between both to make it unclear creating the tagent I mentioned.

For the face soften the edges of her cheek and the michael jackson nose, I'm not very good at painting but I tried, I'm sure you can do better.

>> No.3504370

>>3503658
That depends on what level of finishing you're looking for.
Your base colors look fine, so maybe just delete the muddy shadows layer and background (if it's a layer and you didn't just paint everything in a single one), create a layer and block the entire base of the character, then clip a layer on top and lay some flat colors, the ones you had before painting the shadows looked like they were fine, then lay the shadows with a harder brush instead of the muddy thing you got going (in another clipped layer of course), the lineart is very solid on it's own, so unless you wanna go into render that's about all you need, maybe another layer for color corrections and light reflections/rim light.

idk what you like but it's sooted for something like this style

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bb9H8nIFcRX/?taken-by=calumalexanderwatt

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhpdqrzlEV4/?taken-by=daverapoza

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAeu_8PHfej/?taken-by=sergi_brosa

which are all pretty simple from a technical standpoint but rely on a really strong sense of anatomy, gesture, design, inking and color theory.

Anatomy study for a character project I’m working on. I started working for a studio more than a year ago and they’ve been working me to the bone, so this is my first time doing a focused character design in over a year and a half.

Switched to Sketchbook pro instead of the usual photoshop and I will never go back.

I’m excited to show my followers what I have but I feel like this isn’t enough. Figured I’d post it here to get some critiques. Worried about the arms mostly.

>> No.3504927

Some things: I thought this was sombra from overwatch. Demeanor hair and face made me think sombra so handle clothes and palette with care

The arms do look weird with regards to the chest. Bring the tots down and make them more realistically shaped or shrink the shoulders. Your current silhouette looks like a tranny. If that’s intentional then you did very well. If it’s not then you need to tweak it

If you want to practice anatomy, practice it in realistic proportions and format. It'll teach better shape design and yield deeper understanding of anatomy in the first place.

Also, the gesture is a bit stiff an unnatural. Perspective is unconvincing. Those are both essential to figure drawing.

I'd also make sure to study the bony landmarks, as your drawing is lacking a collar-bone entirely, and the shoulders and neck look like putty as a result.

And while this doesn't have to do with anatomy per se, that expression is awful. I don't mean to be a dick, but the one eyebrow raised expression is an expression cliche, indicative of an artist that either doesn't care or hasn't studied actual human expressions that are much more effective and conveying a realistic mood.

Just my two cents. Sincerely hope you find this helpful!

Are you pertaining to the lighter shade of grey behind her? If so, it wasn't intended to be a light source, just a stock background to make the subject pop out.

What I'm mainly looking for are people's opinions on the art style itself, i.e. if you were to commission something, would you rather have it done in the traditional comic/anime art style or in this overtly-digital MTG-esque painting?

you cannot divorce the backdrop from your lightsource so jot that down. Ignoring that (which you shouldn’t. An integrated backdrop, even if it’s a certain gray tone, will change how your art is perceived) the skin is pretty muddy. Since you’re painting over grayscale that’s a struggle but you should introduce some reds into the skin (especially in or around the shadows) using layer modes to reduce some of the gray and add life. Red other than those ugly random highlights Jesus they’re so saturated even though your lightsource isn’t calling for it. And considering you just put a dot shine you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re just trying to emulate something you thought looked good. No hip would reflect light like that.
Also the hair is in strings it’s too much. You should study some hair and learn to block it in without line. Like should only really be used to add detail in FEW places or for a purpose.

now draw 1,000 more cute faces. do some from reference, photos, other artists, and lots from imagination. Notice how much better #200 is than 1, and how much better #500 is than #200. #1,000 will probably be pretty decent if not legitimately good.

actually looking again you seem to have nice form rendering going and a lightsource, so go warm on lit areas and cool on the shadows. Then add in the blue ambient on surfaces facing up, this should be stronger in the shadows for obvious reasons. Could add a fresnel effect on the forms tangents, like a highlight, the brain likes it and will serve well to border the forms if you ditch the lines. Darks still <- sideways -> from light source and ambient blue from above. Suppose it would be surface normals that equal the crossproduct of those two vectors.

Protip: Approach value as a form of color coding. Here we really only have 4 tones, backdrop, light figure, dark figure and flesh. (interestling note: you can sidestep conventional value-grouping by having each of these tones have their own groups independent of eachother where the dark and light are very near eachother. Nice touch if it was intentional).

The dark figure feels very crammed in so I suggest expanding the width of the canvas a bit.

First of all the pose is... interesting. It's like you took the tits and ass pose and rotated it so the viewer would get neither ass nor tits. Then you dressed her in what looks like clothing designed to flatter the contours of a pregnant woman. The end result is a dumpy, sort of snowmanish silhouette.

I'm not sure whether or not the torso can twist that way, but assuming it can we have a very dynamic pose being completely obscured by the costuming. Now drawing cute girls and designing costumes isn't really my area of expertise but I'll point out some things anyway.

First off why not wrap her garments so they conform to her body? A tight vest or corset works, and you can contrast with a frilled undershirt and a flowing skirt. She can have a cloth hood/ring around her neck like what Robin Hood's merry men would have. Add a bit of movement into them as well as her hair and you can probably sell this pose as happening in real life. If the character is supposed to be a cute girl emphasize this fact!

Also not a fan of dual-wielding crossbows. For one they have to be like over a meter long/wide to have killing force making them very large and heavy to hold with one hand and they also require two arms and a leg to span, sometimes needing extra equipment depending on the type. They also only fire one bolt before needing reloading, and that bolt is balanced on top and not locked in place like a bullet in a chamber would be.

To answer your actual question though, I'd get on pixiv and study anime face proportions and take note of the massive cranial dimensions in relation to facial features. This appears to be the secret to cute faces.

these are nice, they feel very direct. I would try to introduce some other hues into each section, they all feel very even at the moment (eg. on the right: the hair is all yellow, the skin is all peach, the eyes are one tone of blue). some variation might make it a little more interesting.

>>3507959
looks pretty good when zoomed out, kinda like one of those cheesy fantasy novel cover illustrations. there's a ton of detail all over the place, so it's hard to find a spot where the eye can rest (my eyes keep darting between the face and the tassets). check out some Frazetta paintings and look at how his characters' legs almost always become obfuscated and blend into the background further down in the illustration, so our eyes know to focus up top where the action's happening. you're doing it a bit here, but the bright snow against the dark legs really makes them stand out.

I don't actually know anything about anime so take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like the facial proportions are cramped, with the mouth being especially wide and low. There are also some unflattering planes you added into the face that I'm not sure should even be there anatomically, specifically around the chin. Reducing the gap in the value range in the light group is a good idea here. I wanted to do something about her lazy eye, but anime eyes is a whole science in and of itself that I haven't really looked into and it still looks off to me here. Mind the negative space between face contour and facial features and keep your lights and darks distinct.

Did this plenair one. Can someone crit?
I already see a couple of mistakes. One obvious one is perspective proportions. The stuff behind is way too small and at the same time too high vertically. After taking a pic and comparing it got obvious. Another thing is the tree could be a bit darker to be on the first plane. Although I deliberately made it be a part of the darker shape behind it, seems like it was a bad idea of me. The third thing is the compositional choice to put the house behind the tree and let the tree hide its focal point part. Well, the idea was to study colors after all.

Movement and composition is something you should check out.

Where do you want us to look? How do you want us to look at it? Where's the beginning and the end?
Try to do the poses yourself in front of a mirror, and then when you put pen to paper exaggerate them to create more movement.
You can also look at sketches you think are good and try to figure out what it is that makes them appealing, and try to jam it into your work.

Also do gestures.

But there is so much info on this and the question is not much more substantial than "how do I draw good?", so it's hard to give you a good answer.

I use Paint Tool SAI, but I'm not lookin for any magical brush sets or anything like that. Or hell, what subject matter did you guys start with when you were learnin to paint? What helped? I know you gotta block out the values first, but blending is where it becomes a nightmare.

I am >>3513908 and are also trying to learn to paint after almost completely ignoring it and completely focusing on drawing.

I thought CTRL+Paint on YT were nice to learn different techniques and approaches to digital drawing.
And Sycra on YT had a really good exercise for learned about values (iirc "the value game").
Besides those I've mostly looked at Sycra and Sinix painting videos to figure out their approach.

But I'm sure there are more effective ways to learn out there, but these are the ones I have experience with.

I reblogged this today. I'm very impressed with all the detail. Is this a 3d model, a painting or a mix of both?

No arm, his expression looks suprised and attentitive towards the other character. The arm holding the soda is contradictory to his role in this illustration by making him look relaxed.
