Sketchbook Thread - July 1st Edition

Post your lastest sketches.
Quality does not matter, shitty drawings are better than no drawings, just share whatever you've got going in your sketchbook or whatever.

Here's one I did yesterday. I used to draw all the time when I was younger and my uncle was a professional cartoonist. He taught me a lot and I was making all sorts of animations and stuff when I was around 13 - 15. I got away from it when I gold older because like two different people saw my work and said they didn't think it was very good.

I never really go for realistic, I just kind of like to cartoon. Not sure what people think but feedback is welcomed. Just please go easy on me. These are just sketchbook drawings.

I never thought drawing hands would be my favorite part, used to absolutely kill my process dead in its tracks till I started drawing 10 of my own each day starting a month ago. If you struggle with hands, seriously just do 10 a day, don't erase or spend too long on them (3-4 minutes is good), just do your best. Use a mirror for some of them and draw small. You'll see improvement.

These houses look a bit small without perspective-lines.
You put trees next to the houses as a point of reference, yet they still look tiny.
Try at least one-point-perspective to give the viewer a better understanding of scale.

I make the final assets in adobe illustrator, sometimes using a scan/photo as a guide and sometimes not. This particular project used a fairly simple isometric view whenever depth was shown. (Just like in 2D sidescrolling games, the style was used to avoid perspective inconsistency)

Most of these studies (like a lot of my more realistic ones, pic related) are orthographic drawings - a type usually used by designers, which focuses on one of the 6 major sides of a subject and does NOT show perspective distortion.

My 2 main reasons behind the studies are
1) to learn about the source material - how it is constructed, what makes the source look like itself, what do I find myself drawing first, etc.

2) As a "rehearsal" of sorts, so I don't need to be constantly referring to reference material and I am able to fluently construct my own unique versions of the source without the need for more outside info. I seek out additional info as needed, but I make sure I have a solid enough foundation so I'm not crippled without it.

I study to improve my knowledge of the source material, which will allow me to create faster and better art/designs in the future.

The truck studies were used to make the animated video the screenshot appears in.

The pieces were created in adobe illustrator and separated onto different layers for animation purposes. all the assets were then imported and rigged in adobe after effects, timed to the VO narration, which was provided to me.

The client(s) were very adamant that the truck shown in the video look as close to their company vehicles as possible. They sent me 3 photos, only one of which was a 3/4 view, but it showed the back and side. Thankfully there was another that had a frontal view. Google did not seem to have any photos of these vehicles at the time. Not sure if there are any now, but you never know.

Here are some simple gestures of Tracer from Overwatch. I want to take this into the computer and do proper linework and color, but I want to know what you guys think of the gestures I’ve laid out. Are they successful? Loose and lithe enough for the character of Tracer? I’m going for a stylized look, kind of angular but curvy too.

This is my favorite piece in the thread. I really like it.I think it needs just a bit more value put in though. Not much more however because I like the way it looks a bit hazy. Too much clarity would subtract from the mood it invokes.

The character I find pretty poorly done which int saying much because its basically a stick figure and should be the easiest part to fix. Either draw a better outline or maybe find a more interesting pose. It sounds nitpicky but its one of the main focal points of the drawing, and looks like you got lazy and subtracts from the rest of the picture.

honestly your style is at a complete mismatch with the subject matter. I like the style a lot in its own right but it doesnt lend itself at all to horror. It reminds me more of a snarky comic book. Something about the line expression.

The real gem in this picture is the room you drew. Way more impressive to look at than the corny monster. Monsters are fucking hard to do right. Less is more a lot of the time and lighting and style is everything. For this piece to work you need to make the monster look less like its from a cartoon or comic book. I think if you oil painted the same monster it would look eye catching.
