No rules just tools if you want to learn how to draw anime you should draw anime more drawing less shitposting remember it's summer edition

This is the place for:

1. Participating in anime group studies:
>Mindfully break down the reference in various ways instead of mindlessly copying.
>Make multiple copies. It should get easier each time. If not, reevaluate your methods.
2. Posting your individual anime studies:
>They should be studies drawn with a reference or tutorial.
>Provide the reference used if you can.
3. Serious discussion about emulating anime style art:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /ALT/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Anyone know of someone like istebrak where they teach fundamentals as a online sort of course? They seem to cover a good chunk of the basics but looks like she tries to lead her teachings more towards painting rendering style stuff. I'm more of wanting to find someone who teaches the fundamentals without leading people into a set way of end goal like that, enough to let someone see where they stand after and then focusing on what they lack in.

I want to aim for mangaka/anime as my end goal but I'm not focusing on including any stylized aspects while I learn my fundamentals and have a good grasp of them first and foremost, then move into doing the anime stuff. What I guess I'm trying to say is.. is there any good online one to two month long program course ran by anyone well known that covers the basic fundamentals so that by the end of it, you would have a clear idea of what you lack and focus on that?

That really can't be helped. What you call "fundamentals without leading people into a set way of end goal" would just be basic stuff, like lighting, perspective, and breaking objects into shapes. You don't really need any courses or tutorials for that kind of stuff. Just observing things around you ought to be enough to teach yourself. It's basically just geometry without the math. Just about any art course is going to teach you how to draw in the style of the teacher. Your best bet for anime and manga is to read books specifically on it (available in the OP) and by observing works of Japanese animators and mangaka.

I forgot to mention that I'm currently doing drawabox just so that I'd get some better understanding of things from that. I just want to make sure I don't skip through whats needed out of fundamentals before jumping straight into something that's a style of art.

I'll look into the OP stuff and see what I can use into my study time tomorrow. I still wouldn't mind coming across something that just goes over the basics of everything before leading people into one thing or another towards their end goals and know which parts they lack experience.

Why are you people obssessing over trying to translate this? do you honestly think theres some secret advices or formulas there that will make you cheat your way in the learning curve?

Just by glancing at it you can tell its a book for intermediary artists ( AKA above the level of 99% of /ic/ ) it just teaches a few tricks and improvements that you can refine your artwork with, but this just works if you art is already in a solid level, otherwise you will be trying to polish crap.

I suggest you all start with Jazza's youtube videos. After a 5-6 months, maybe you could consider leveling up and start to use Mark Crilley. Then after a good year or two, you can level up to Sycra.

>observe the complex shapes

It's worth noting here that if you're drawing flaccid dicks, you're in luck because their shape is actually less complex than an erect dick.

To make sense of the shape of an erect dick, it's easiest to just look at the internal anatomy - it's basically these three tubes squashed against each other, with a few layers of various tissue surrounding them like a burrito wrapping.

When the corpora cavernosa engorge, they push against the wrapping to create that vaguely triangular cross-section where the urethra/corpus spongiosum is at the bottom.

When they shrink, the ratio of their circumference vs the surrounding tissue shrinks and the dick becomes more circular. So when you draw a flaccid dick you can just think of it as a soft circular tube.

it's always nice to see good artworks with a mix of east and west. A cartoony anime or a cartoon with anime-ish aesthetic. Some western artists can pull it off without looking too tryhard. An example of this is Over the garden wall

>Hey /ic/, which anime/manga artstyle are you trying to emulate?
>Are you studying an specific artist? Or just the general style of the time?

Masamune Shirow is my favourite artist, but I never seem to able to approach his style. It's like if Tom Clancy could have illustrated his own novels like Geoff Darrow did for Frank Miller.

Instead, my art tends to resemble the aesthetic of 80's anime - probably because that's what I remember most fondly. Kenichi Sonoda (pic related) would be a perfect example.

Seconded: you have to study more than just one thing, and apply what you learn in each study to the next, and then apply all of that to your original work. Copying the same piece over and over won’t get you anything but a perfect recollection of that one specific piece.

>Copying the same piece over and over won’t get you anything but a perfect recollection of that one specific piece.

That's the goal. Having a good recollection of specific pieces I like will make for a good starting point for making original work and learning other things. Jumping around studying everything all the time just leads to nothing really sticking consistently to apply to my own work and not getting the most out of the reference. It would only be a waste if I wasn't using construction and doing it mindlessly.

>> No.3492425

>>3492417
Yeah, I get the benefit to these exercises. But it's been quite a few months since this whole thing started, don't you think it's start to dabble on original pieces other than that catgirl thingy from a long while ago? Or have you been doing that outside this thread?

The benefits to these exercises will diminish a lot if you don't critically apply it to your own personal pieces.

This is seriously a waste of time. This is how you get stuck in /beg/. And it is sad too, because you clearly are putting the time and effort into drawing.

If you are just going to do anime studies, I highly recommend you at least grab a anime how to draw book from the artbook thread and just start doing copies of drawings from those. Go from beginning to end. You will learn faster doing that, and you will probably gain the confidence to apply what you learn.

>> No.3492584

>>3492417
Effort is more valuable than quantity. If you just rush to get as much done as possible, you won't learn as much as you would if you took the time to actually thoroughly analyze the image. Don't copy for the sake of copying. Copying is only meant to prove that you can draw the same as the image you see. Analyzing the image is much more important.

I would say that sane and rational people eventually reach a point where constantly being in a state where you just consume media becomes maddening. At least I experienced this. I have to do something constructive, like a rodent that has to gnaw on something or else its teeth puncture its skull and kill it. I have to "chew on something" and in this case that means do something constructive instead of consuming. I would like to garden but I don't have property. I like cute things so I may as well draw cute things.

Trying to get better at drawing anime heads from imagination. What can I do to improve the results?

>> No.3500260

>>3500208
These results are pretty good. I'd say move on and try drawing the whole body this well, hair and all, from multiple angles. So you can get proportion relationships and work on making everything work together and all that.

If you're already that good, then it might be time to make something rather than study angles alone. Start working on your design principals, appeal, etc.

The pursuit of more accurate perspective and anatomy etc. goes on forever, but don't neglect the pursuit of appeal/design, and of completing work as well.

So as silly as this is going to sound, your next step really is adding hair. Then shoulders, and how they connect, how to make that look natural, and so on. While keeping it all in at least appealing perspective (doesn't have to be perfect, what you've done with the heads looks fine).

yes, i think so. i may have done it wrong. usually you put 'soul' for something like idk dark souls and 'soulless' for the remake. but here i have cleverly put soulless twice, because of the utter pointlessness of the subject and because the new interpretation is exactly the same as the old one conceptually, a change no different than the different fonts i used in the captions.

For me, the surefire way that works is to a) Know the subject, then b) Know perspective.

For example if I ask you to draw a cube you can probably just do it at this point. It's because the construction of the cube is simple and figuring out the perspective from any angle is not that hard.

Now if there is a body part you've draw a LOT, like an eye or a head, you can probably draw that from memory too, and from a good number of angles. The same thing happens to whatever you learn.

Part of it is learning muscle memory shortcuts. Especially if you're learning cartoons. Lots of art teachers might discourage this as caricature rather than truly 'seeing' but it's pretty darn helpful.

So you can deliberately learn a certain set of lines to represent something (like an eye, or nose or whatever) and then when those are memorized into your hand, it's easier to rotate them etc. Your mind is probably using some mixture of what it's learned, (through observation or whatever) and what it knows about perspective, what's been memorized into the hand, etc.

I don't exactly know how it works in your brain but I know it does work. Think of things you know how to draw really well and ask yourself 'what's the difference between that thing, and what I /want/ to draw. Why can I do this one thing and not the other? What's the difference? What do I know? What do I not know? Etc.

There might be a hack, where you can just practice your visual imagination until it's broken good, I don't know. I haven't fooled with that much. Instead I worked with what nature gave me, so I mostly do the above. But I'm open to this possibility too. Though I haven't really heard of anyone getting success with this more esoteric idea.

Even Kim Jung Gi, Mr. Draw from the imagination himself, teaches 'knowing things' + 'understanding good-enough perspective'. By good enough I mean good enough to trick the eye, rather than perfect.

Here's a rough summery:

Fast! Simple!
How to draw the head.

The head is like a ball with a mask.
Drawing the skull is a pain, so I simplified the mask.

Where to place the eyes.
It's clear if you put the skull on top.
Let's draw the upper and lower lines.

Eyes don't look like this in manga, so let's deform it some more.
Using this shape, you can make any kind of eye.

The bridge of the nose starts above the eyes, and gets higher at the center of the eyes.

The ears go around the sides of the eyes.

We've completed 80% of the drawing!
Let's ink it.

(The next section, the artist just shows different kinds of eyes and noses you can draw from the rough draft and the various names for them.)

Hair grows like this, so...
I draw it around it a bit larger than the head.
Let's draw it together with the ears.

Erase the draft, and finished!
Using this mask, you can draw any kind of face.
