If all of your art were created by another person, would you be a fan of it?

>> No.3469518

>>3469478
That is a really good question.

I personally would based on what I do now, but I struggled for a long time with my artistic identity because there were a few different directions I wanted to take my work, namely between more fluid digital painterly work and more simple, bold graphic work. That's a stylistic tug in two separate directions and it resulted in a confused and inconsistent portfolio with work that looks like it could have been made by totally different artists.

>>3469478
Probably not. It's very amateurish. Why do you have to ask this kind of question? I don't even know what I want to draw like. There are a lot of peoples' art styles that I like, but I wouldn't want to do the same. Although, it's not like I don't like amateur art, it can have appeal some times. I'm just not very good at that either. I should put more heart and soul into it. Some people just have a really good eye or taste.

>> No.3469529

I guess this is the artist version of "write the kind of book that you would love to find on a shelf and read", but for some reason I never thought of it this way.

...maybe? I can't help but be aware there are gaping holes in my skill and areas of comfort, but the colors and themes I work with are ones I also like seeing in other people's art. On the other hand everyone probably benefits from moving out of their comfort zone and seeing what they can do there.

>> No.3469533

I'd like it, yes, wouldn't be a patron on Patreon but I'd follow my instagram. I'm much more critical when it comes to my own stuff than everyone else's, and I only draw stuff I like, so if someone else was doing it it'd be great.

I would be stoked. Hyped, even.
Reading my own comic without knowing the story would be amazing, as it has pretty much everything I love reading about. A lot of visually fun stuff, but also an intriguing world and a lovable cast of characters. Easily digestable genre fiction that is just smart enough to set itself apart from similar stories by subverting expectations, while fulfilling the readers' demand for a light hearted adventure story. While being over the top at times, the story always grounded in its world's rules. Jokes and witty dialogue are not only played for cheap laughs, but to explore the characters. Challenges aren't overcome by pure strength, but clever or daring ideas. You really want to travel this world of wonders along the main characters. Oh, I would LOVE my work, if it was created by another person. Sadly, that's not the case and I'm left with self doubt and uncalled perfectionism, ridde
with anxiety and doubtful if anyone else would enjoy my story as much as I do.

presumably yeah. Why should I draw something that I wouldn't be fan of myself? I like to think of my future self as one of my favorite artists and everyone who is worth their time and effort think so for themselves as well. You are CREATING that future artist by grinding it today.

>> No.3470176

>>3469478
Probably not. I'm still at a point where I only go for my style because its a reliable formula good for commissions. Pretty generic to be honest .

>> No.3470197

>>3469478

That's essentially the goal I'm aiming at, to make the kind of art that I want to see myself. A perfect amalgation of my favorite artists and influences, ideally.
I think it's a good question in that it serves as a internal compass. I have done a fair bit of nsfw commissions and iOS cutesy gaming assets and they all leave a kind of bad taste in my mouth. When I do personal work I occasionally hit the right note so to speak and those are the happiest moments in my life. Nothing is more fulfilling. Even sex with beautiful women is garbage in comparison.

>What did you settle on?
I ended up going in the more graphic direction (pic related). I found that it meshed better with my needs and I've been a lot happier since zeroing in on one stylistic direction. Digital painterly stuff is really fun and all, but I found that I struggled to find a 'finishing point' in that type of work. In other words, I had a hard time determining whether a piece was complete or not, and the result was that I would just keep polishing turds and spend too much time on them instead of moving on and creating new stuff, which stressed me out. With the more graphic stuff, I really enjoy being able to understand much more clearly when something is done. I can just pump out stuff much more quickly since it's all flat shapes and simple lines, and I've been making a lot more stuff recently because of it. I've also found that my freelance illustration jobs more often want this sort of stuff than the more painterly approach.

>>3470164
>but I'd want "myself" to settle down soon.
Something that helped me is to start creating some more similar work. Look back on your favorite stuff that you've made, and make something really similar to it. Then make another. You don't need to reinvent the wheel stylistically speaking - use the same technique, colors, etc. and but just draw a different subject matter (but it doesn't even need to be that different). It's fun & important to experiment a bit, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with doubling down on your 'safe zone' a bit, and to create work that you have the most fun doing. Explore the depths of your safe zone.

When I draw to my strengths I can create a singular aesthetic. If another artist's life journey was so similar to mine that he created all of my art... well, I would have to find him and kill him.

Your art is so bad that it almost killed the thread. Bumping from the 10th page.

There's really not a whole lot to it. What are you even going for here? It looks like you put a solid 5 minutes worth of work into. Why is it so lazily done? Is this really what you consider to be the drawing you're most proud of? This is what you would share if someone asked for an example of your best work?

This is pretty cool. Though it looks like a still from a larger composition, or part of an animation. There's not a whole lot going on. It's like its a shot right before the camera rotates around the figures and pans down to reveal the city / tower thing and the landscape, which would probably be a lot more interesting to see.

I'd probably think it's technically ok, nothing spectacular, and it wouldn't inspire any sort of emotions in me. I'd probably find it boring.
