Question for Tablet Users: Do you usually sketch out your work on paper first or are you working digitally from the start? Why?

>> No.3448791

I work digitally from the start 90% of the time just because it's more comfortable for me, I'm used to it. Although, if I'm kinda lost with what I want to do, I may do a couple of quick sketches in pen, to explore the idea

>> No.3448795

I never combine them as it gets frustrating. You also feel compelled to just digitally color real lineart which is a terrible idea in the long run because of differing texture.

>> No.3448837

Most cad monkeys in our office just do their sketches in photoshop. Our fastest moron take 2 hour to sketch a fucking house. Never hire digitaltards who don't have solid foundation of drawing in paper or any physical surface.

only people using paper professionally instead of working 100% digital are old timers that struggle letting go their ancient habits and their deprecated workflow

also, maybe a few cretins: the kind that take pictures on 16 mm film and write on mechanical typewriters

Sometime I like my half-assed sketch so much that I'm turning it into digital piece.
Or I switch to sketching with traditional medium if I feel like I'm stuck with some particular painting.
Other than that I'm trying to keep digital and traditional separate. First of all because as I'm adding more steps to my process it becomes less fluid and natural.

Used to start on paper more. Now I often just skip to digital. I mostly use paper for conceptualizing now, and digital for the finished work.

I sketch out on paper scan it then paint it digitally. Its kinda hard doing line art without a cintiq. So I do all line work traditional.

>>3448764
Of course no. If you want to be productive, scanning and cleaning a photo is a nonsensical waste of time

if you have a half decent tablet, you should be able to do with it the exact same things that you would on physical paper. Even more, since you've got layers, ctr+z, and liquify

Laughably untrue. One of the biggest and most successful M:TG artists does her stuff on paper first.

The size of Intous M is perfectly fine but Wacom jews are making overpriced shit with broken drivers and giving them money means getting scammed. They aren't the only company on the market anymore so there's literally no reason to support their shitty monopolistic attitude. Buying Wacom in 2018 is just retarded mindless brandfaggotry.

New to digital art, but what's worked best for me is to do a completed pencil line drawing, take a photo, and trace it digitally. I just do my best line work that way, it's how I've done it for twenty years.
I've been trying out a color-replacement style that instantly finds the dark values and replaces them with a solid color. Gives you thicc, nonaliased lines though so it's a bit stylized, not good for every piece.

20 years makes it seem like that's how long I've taken it seriously. I just meant I've been drawing with a pencil since I was a kid, though my output plummeted in college + some years after. Only recently have I gotten back into it and taken it seriously.

People working on physical media are the vegans of the illustration world. Normal people work 100% digital and you'll never hear them pontificating

>> No.3450306

I always start with pencil on paper, and do inking and coloring on digital. I like how much natural my pencil sketches turn out but digital is always better for clean finished arts. My best friend does the complete opposite though, he would always skecth and rearrange on digital, print that and do the finished piece traditionally.

I also have a question specifically for screen tablet users. Is 13” too small to draw on for you? If I had $600 would it be better to get a used Wacom 13 Pro or a 16”/21” alternative? I want the Wacom for its better color-accurate screen and steady pen.

>> No.3450990

>>3450789
I did exactly that. I went from a Cintiq 13 hd to a 16" cheap alternative. the 3" more aren't worth it. Trust me on this one.
The color accuracy and lesser jitter are much much more worth it.
Can't wait to get my hands on a cintiq again.

>> No.3453277

what's the difference between Bamboos and Intuos? is it really significant?
my Intuos 3 stylus is a little damaged, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a slightly bigger replacement as long as it's cheap (it's a A6, so pretty small)

>> No.3453325

>>3453277
Bamboo → new 'intuos'
Intuos → new 'intuos pro'
bigger is better to be honest

>> No.3453348

>>3453277
Just look on Wacom's site and look at how each product is different. The Bamboo has been redesigned into more of a note-taking device, and it's stylus is pretty limited. The Intuos is the entry level art tablet now - decent pen, but no frills and smaller. The Intuos Pro has more features like control buttons on the tablet, and a better pen.
Honestly, do you buy products without looking at the specs first? I look up anything i buy over $20, and read reviews for what the product is really like in use, even for stuff like coffee grinders or irons. (I recently bought a travel iron for flattening old watercolors.)(Yes, you use irons to flatten them, look it up on YouTube) I also look stuff up on cordcutters for the best quality products on the market.

>do you buy products without looking at the specs first?
course not, but this is more about feeling. the difference between 2048 and 50 millions memes of pressure isn't very obvious.
I found a good offer anyway, so I think that's gonna be it.

I think the tilt control on the pro is much more obvious than the 1 million memes of pressure (also size is the biggest difference if you are getting a bigger one, since on a bigger tablet I found my art quality improve now that I could paint smaller bits more easily).
