Why was it that old art was filled with such qts?

What’s the best way to draw like this?

Go ahead and take a look at artstation right now. Without even looking at it I can guarantee that at least 60% of everything you'll see is hot girl related. 85% if you take away the environments.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Charcoal or soft 2B leads... usually 2mm used in tandem with a pocket sharpener. I fill composition books with portraits when I get sick of the book I'm reading.

That kind of art was generally commissioned by rich men, or are family portraits. They're supposed to be flattering.

It's boring as fuck though. It's at the point of oversaturation where you can recall almost all compositions from somewhere else. Shit for masses, nothing more.

Those old b/w photos were indeed flattering, because they had a natural softness caused by the limits of the technology and the long exposure times. We used to call this the "Barbara Walters filter."

Because old film required long exposures, these models also had to have very neutral poses and facial expressions. You might interpret this as poise, but it was a necessity.

Seems to me the answer is to blur everything except details on the eyes, nose, mouth and hair for that dreamy style. Maybe like this for a modern attempt at that feeling?

..or maybe it has something to do with the viewer's eyes? Almost like depth of field in a sense, where the place the viewer most likely will look at first is the most clearly detailed part but the rest of it fades away.

>> No.3419806

Why does it matter if they fucked them? If you've ever met a girl that wants to model for nude paintings you'd know the basis of all those relationships are sexual. But at some point you need to realize that making the paintings is more important than fulfilling a girls dreams of being your muse. You'd be surprised how many artist model relationships are built on tension instead of action.

I tried painting something that was noisy and had a lot of texture, and people were like "That shit's too noisy, I can't focus on anything. Oh, and the forms are too 3D. You gotta flatten them out."

Needless to say, people don't know what the fuck they want.

its just emulating the way we see things irl, when we focus on a certain point ( e.g eyes) everything else is not in focus and therefore blurred.

>> No.3435311

they did also emulate paintings a bit more in those days, sort of the opposite of now, what 'just looked right' to them was based on all the paintings they'd seen, and what 'just looks right' to us is based on all the photography(+cinema/tv) that we've seen.
