whatever schools you can afford, find some of the student films online, and try to find the worst(recent) ones. That will give you an idea of what the school gives you.
Also find out who the staff are, and see if they worked on anything that you like

Jin Kim went from Korean economics student to Lead Character Designer at Disney without a single arts degree.

Just draw.

I know someone who went to SCAD and they made it sound good but I've honestly got no idea what they're doing for money now. They did improve a lot while studying there.

Have to agree with this.

Even if someone is forcing you to do something you'll probably never put in the extra amount of effort or take the risks needed to be great at something. People who become pro commercial artists, not shit tier fantasy artists working for Paizo but people working in games or movies making decent money, are motivated to constantly keep learning and working even when the 9 - 5 job ends. In school you'll need to be making art all the time, not just for class assignments. If you cant bring yourself to even do a minimum of work with out the fear of failing a class you have problems.

good!=great
you can and should become good through self-study, but anyone that suggests you can self-teach your way to becoming the CEO of Microsoft (Bill Gates did it!) is lying

Most universties have a facebook group or reddit for students or prospective students. Ask about their animation program and if it leads to a lot of opportunities. They'll be pretty honest with you.
