Like when you write with your pencil you keep it between all 5 fingers. But you can also put it between you thumb and your index finger

I've noticed with art you've got to turn off your brain to prevent asking these stupid questions.
You hold the pencil with your hand.

I'm actually interested in this thread

According to most people, the way I've held the pencil my entire life is considered incorrect, even though I've always been told that I have beautiful handwriting and I was always pretty good at art.

Pic related, my grip is apparently called "lateral tripod"

Grips for drawing =/= grips for writing

Although I use lateral tripod for everything since I'm drawing on a tablet.

I change how I hold a pencil according to what I'm doing- never in art school was there a moment where a teacher told an artist how to hold a pencil, as long as the artist was getting the results they wanted. I think this subject is like a lot of subjects in this forum, they're obsessed over and everyone thinks there are "rules" for everything, when in reality, it doesn't fucking matter. As long as it doesn't hurt your hand, who gives a fuck?
Example - loose sketching with more gesture, I might hold the pencil looser, and more towards the back of the pencil, so I can get bigger, more expressive arcs. For tight detail work, or cross hatching, more of a dynamic tripod. For charcoal or large drawings or shading, I'll hold the pencil sideways, so I can use the edge of the lead/charcoal, not the point. It's completely situational.

Don't obsess over details like this, nobody cares. However you have the most control and comfort, is all that matters. If you do a lateral quadropod, so what? What do your drawings look like, that's what matters. If it's holding you back, try another grip.

That's one way to hold it, I do similar for large drawings, and expressive, gestural work. But i wouldn't hold it like that for crosshatching, or tight detail work. To each their own, though - whatever gets it done is the right way.

>>3394771
People with freakishly long fingers often do this grip - and this person does have really long fingers and a really long thumb. As long as they have enough control on the pencil and they're not hurting their hand, so what.

drag and blend. constantly change pressure for quality shading and a dynamic life-like look about your drawing. don't think in lines and hatches, lines are just the boundaries that hold everything together. what'c inside is unpredictable and fluid. learn the rules but don't follow them.

Far from the tip, you should never rest your hand in whatever you are drawing on. You draw with your arm suspended, It should work like the wheels of old locomotive trains.

The same way you hold a fork, for every need you find the way to hold it effectively. There are no rules as long as it serves you. Explore and make your own conclusions.

Not that OP but to add to that - you need to disconnect the way you hold the pencil from the amount of pressure you apply. Even when using a standard writing grip you should be able to hold the pencil so lightly that someone can take it out of your hand, and likewise you need to learn which part of your hand/palm to use to apply the right amount of consistent pressure. This is specific to each artist obviously.

It takes time, but it's worth it.

Interesting analysis. I drew that myself and I'm interested to here how I could improve?

I don't really use construction and since I was a kid I would just start at a point and expand with detail. Old habits die had I guess
