Honestly, who gives a shit about rendering once the artist has achieved a certain level? When it comes to chinese artists, I personally find the rendering of artists like Fengshua, Yang Qi, Yudehong, Zeen Chin etc way more appealing than that of HGJ or new Ruanjia. Mainly because their rendering shows way more confidence in their understanding of how color and light works. They don't need to render every skin pore to make something look good.

always work bigger than you final output. goes for any design really. Compressing an image in the end gives pretty amazing effects. So if your output is 1080, you should be hitting around 2-3x that size or at least 3k pixels. Im pretty sure craig mullins and ruan jia are sometimes working at 10-20k pixels, maybe even more.

No, the portrait he did was at 60k or 80k px, it showed it on screen. It wouldn't make sense to use that on an illustration with environments, characters etc, that's not how these details work. And painting on a huge canvas without knowing why you're doing it, and how to paint to make use of it.. it's not gonna make your work look any better, you're just stressing photoshop or whatever you're using. I see a lot of beginners make this mistake, particularly because they see threads like this and just try to copy without thinking. Unless your client needs a huge wall poster for an event, 2500px - 3000px is all you need.
