Pic related tells me to get viewfinders, a clear piece of plastic or glass and some other bs, do I really need that to get the most out if this book? I'm a complete noon never drawed in my life

to get the most? yes. if you're serious about improving fast it's worth it. but those tools are best for breaking down bad habits. you need some experience to grasp the significance of those tools. as a total beginner those tools work nearly as good in concept.

Yes, it's essential to fostering creativity, I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without it

>> No.3386919

I think I have that shit that I made thrown somewhere

You can buy viewfinders or make a cheap following Loomis' advice on building one

I remember I had to find plexiglass for the book but it's been like a freaking decade since I read it, what was it used for?

Betty Edwards was a neurotic. I'm just re-reading this book now

just cut a square hole in a notecard; that's what my high school art class did. if you want lines on it you could draw on some clear tape and paste it on top.

nah just skip that part lol. whenever there's a part in this book (or any other drawing book) that either requires some special equipment or is too much of a hassle, I just draw anime girls instead

Nah, use your cell phone to take interesting pictures instead. The book was written in 1979 before that was a feasible reccomendation

i think it was for tracing irl things to show how 3d goes into 2d or some such, i remember i used a bit of my rat cage lol, my rats all died of a horrific rat aids type thing that makes them go insane and shit out their guts, don't get rats unless you want to watch them die horribly.

Just use your hand if you don't want to make or buy a viewfinder, or maybe throw that book away and read Keys to Drawing if you're new to drawing.

What do you mean by this? Do you think I can get through this book without those things the first time around?

there's stereoscopic slides in there (one slide per eye), so you see little 3d pictures.

I'm unironically interested in the brain stuff, is it still worse? Is it pseudoscience?

sticky says drawing on the right side is pseudosciency, but even horoscopes can be turned into a good story

If you got a hard case of symbol drawing just draw things upside down a lot, these books are to learn to draw with your eyes, Keys has actually good tips on how to use your arm and other general things like drawing first the general obvious things and then go in to the details etc.

>>3388083
So you recommend it over this? Do you think it's good for complete beginners?

>> No.3388088

>>3388085
Yes, your drawing are going to suck either way, some exercises, are the same on both books.

>> No.3388155

Keys to drawing is really great, however it heavily insists on drawing the human figure and I personally dont think its a wise move for complete beginners.
When the book asks you to draw a human head I recommend just drawing an animal skull in the same angle its asking.
