>>3386387
I struggled with this for a really long time. After a while I realized finishing a piece is a skill in itself that you have to practice. I think a good place to start is making finished, clean line drawings of something relatively simple and build the complexity from there. Another thing that really helps me is doing tons of studies of whatever it is I want to draw/paint beforehand. I try to make sure I know exactly how I want to draw everything before I move on to a final finished piece, that way I don't get stuck in the middle, get bored and give up.

I know I'm still /beg/-tier but I have been able to get into the habit of finishing more pieces and it makes drawing much more fun, so I hope this helps.

Today I painted this serval! It was pretty fun to do but I really need to branch out from animals. Does anyone else get in those ruts where all you draw is one subject? It used to be women but I've moved on to lots and lots of animals. How do you get out of that kinda rut??

Both posts are so interesting! The furniture is wild. You're really good at odd perspective stuff. Have you ever drawn cityscapes?? They're my worst nightmare but it seems like you'd be really good at them!

>>3386387
Some advice someone gave me was to "keep pushing the drawing/painting/sculpture till it's broken". So even if you get tired, bored, or start seeing mistakes you can't quit until it's absolutely impossible to do anything else. It was given to me in regards to fine arts but I think it can be applied to illustration work too. So maybe just really really push yourself to completely finish it?? I hope this made any sense. I believe in ya!

I would highly recommend you check out decorative painting and Trompe-l'œil stuff if you want to really understand textures. I took a class of decorative painting and my skills to do textures sky rocketed. Pic related are some of my Wood and Marble paintings from the class. And also Dynamic sketching is amazing for textures.

>>3386423
Thank you anon. I spend a bit too long studying perspective and even longer on drawing objects, pretty much my comfort zone. I have done a couple of cityscapes, but I never gone too deep into it. I should really take time and do a proper one, instead of these, that just look like perspective drawing exercises. I usually get bored, due to how long that kind of drawing takes. I kinda proved to my self I can do long drawings with >>3386418 tree on the right, so I should challenge my self to do a proper city.

>> No.3386832

>>3386831
Pose is stiff AF, no character, perspective is broken.

Tips: Use a line of action for the pose. If it's a proud character, the line of action will be a big curve with the pelvis forward. If they're a dangerous character, they will have a pronounced hunch
Give guns weight. They are not pieces of paper, even pistols are usually quite heavy. If a character is holding a pistol, it should dangle at their sides if they aren't holding it with two hands. If it's a rifle, they should either hold it with two hands or let it dangle on a sling.
Finally, in your piece's perspective, the guy's left foot should be lower ergo closer to the viewer than his right foot.

>> No.3386839

>>3386832

Thanks man. You bring up a lot of good points. I think he's wearing some kind of power armor. That's what I thought when I was drawing him. I'd think that a power armor would give him the ability to hold relatively heavy objects like large guns in his hands with ease (like pieces of paper).

Agree with most of the stuff you said though. Pose is stiff as fuck. No character < absolutely. The left foot thing I don't get. Left foot from our perspective or his? I'm thinking of doing like a hundred of these guys for practice and I'm super thankful for all the critique you gave me.

Aye. I think I need to give more thought to my sketches.

>> No.3386843

>>3386841
Regardless of power armor, holding a gun like that just makes him look wonky. Also what's the point of using power armor if you just use standard cal weapons? I have a soldier who uses an exoskeleton and because of its increased strength he carries an LMG instead of an assault rifle because the suit negates the extra weight and recoil.
The foot on the right of the piece should be lower than the foot on the left. That is perspective.
You're better off doing a hundred FACELESS, FEATURELESS ANATOMY POSES than you are generic power armor dudes.

Hopefully you can just drag the chin back towards the skull and that will fix it.
Rule:
Attractive people's chins, mouths, nose bridges and brows all line up vertically. If those things are moved out, you get ugly chars. Jutting chin = thug, jutting lips = monkeyface, jutting nose bridge = jew, jutting brow = neanderthal. Your piece has a jutting chin.

I've definitely been moved by digital pieces as much as I have by traditional ones, but in my own practice, something about the physicality of the paint and the risk is exciting.

I used to try and digitally paint, but I found that I'd restart dozens of times just because it was so easy to do so- I wouldn't lose any canvas or paint if I chose to scrap everything and start again. Not every character needs to be a flawless beauty, you dumb fuck.

The main thing standing out as incorrect on your piece is the eye placement. The eyelash justting out from behind her nose implies that that eye is a bit higher up perspective wise, but the head-armor piece, nose and lips all imply that it should be lower.

Raise far side edge of eyebrow slightly, delete visible eyelash on far side. It'll stop throwing off the perspective.

Beyond that I have nothing to critique besides maybe the hard edge'd shadow on the side of her nose infront of the eye facing the viewer. Blend dat shit a bit better. You look like someone who is new to painting but spent a lot of time drawing with ink/pen. Am I right about that?

I suppose. I just feel like "I don't like this" isn't an actual critique. Critique is for skill improvement and pointing out where it's lacking, not subject matter. Maybe the person wanted to give her a stronger jaw than she usually has.

Remember, rule of functionality. Two nostrils that look like they actually work. Once you learn that properly, stylize it however you like. Other than that, only advice i'd give is practice figure drawing. You've got a good base to improve from.

Just one man's opinion,
But I think its helpful to use a complimentary color scheme. you have a yellow light so I made the shadows purpley. And in most cases Make sure you are using a full value range. Establish a darkest dark and a lightest light at some point while you are laying things in.

>Make sure you are using a full value range. Establish a darkest dark and a lightest light at some point while you are laying things in.

What do you mean by this? Doesn't a full value range just mean that the darkest dark is black and the lightest light is white?

How do you use a full value range + also establish a darkest dark and a lightest light (that is not black and white respectively)?

well, If you want to do something low contrast go ahead. It is just a lot harder to give things form that way in my experience. My skill level has yet to get there. But if you want low contrast maybe use a lighter background. And if its just white and black you want to avoid, just get really close. I think the form in your piece is good. It just lacked contrast, imo

I'm not the anon who posted the picture. I just want to know what you meant when you said

>Make sure you are using a full value range. Establish a darkest dark and a lightest light at some point while you are laying things in.

Working in a full value range (as far as I know) means that white is the lightest light and black is the darkest dark. So what do you mean by establishing a darkest dark and a lightest light, if it's not simply just black and white?

Yeah, sorry. Paint in your most extreme values.

Like, okay I am going to make this highlight a very light value yellow. Now I can not go lighter than this value, and Likewise for the very darkest shadow even if it is not full black or white.

It is so that you restrain yourself, but also decide on a full range so you dont get stuck painting in midtones.

you need to take it into the 3rd dimension dog, this is almost medieval in it's treatment of space and it contributes a lot to the articulation looking all funny. aside from that some of the details work quite well and the proportions are pretty good, the anatomy is so-so and there are parts which show you need to do more life drawing and in particular more gestural quick drawings, so you learn how to have the forms flow into each other better.

it doesn't make sense to have the waves be out of focus but things like the tentacle in the front be sharp and some other inconsistencies like that. I think the composition is weak in that it leads me right to the eyes but then I have no idea what. And the thing looks friendly since it has hentai heart eyes. The way the tentacles are around the ship too I have no idea what the actual mood or presentation of the story is at this time. I'm sure it's supposed to be hitting a certain emotional plot point so the colors should reflect that.

Ryan Lang's Art of Color and Light is a good course. It's about color and light but also for production and how they affect story. If you were to illustrate scenes from Red Riding Hood you would have the colors mirror what you want the reader to feel.

I placed her in the drawing (based on my horizon and vanishing points) and got a general sense of her lighting in about ~25 minutes to a half hour while we talked with the family.

I finished the background and rendering afterwards, based on what I knew about the room's objects and lighting.

oh I managed to post before finishing text

WHAT is the worst thing about this right now? I'm making a comic and roughing out some of the panels. I'm aware of how scratchy and uncertain the lines are but aside from that what stands out as glaringly bad?

I like where you're headed but think you need to workshop the pose. Not seeing her left foot and arm makes for a rather awkward pose/composition.

anatomy or pose? guessing both? it doesn't help to just keep repeating 'stop polishing a turd'

why so serious?
