It's a little hard to browse the challenge submissions right now so I'll make a collage of all submissions at the end of the day.

Last two days to join the mecha challenge. Here are the rules again.

-Create at least 5 mechas with their respective pilots.
-You can use any technique you want, but the final illustration must look like a decent polished concept art.
-Each character must show a personality on their own, and so do their mechas.
-There are no creative restrictions about the world these characters are from. You can make aliens, humans, flying futuristic mechas or more grounded in reality robots. Use your imagination.
-At the end you have to make at least 5 submissions. These will be finalized pieces.
-If you have time you can draw more mechas/pilots.

Do you dislike the overall shape of the head or just the lack of detail?
The head will be covered in a helmet with just the eyes visible in the shadow, like in pic related, so that's why there is little detail atm,

As this has been a source of confusion for many people, let me just clarify something:

To submit to a challenge, you need to have joined the challenge first. Once a challenge has started, you can no longer join or leave it. All site times and dates are on GMT/UTC.

A submission to a challenge is made by checking the box of the relevant challenge you have joined in the bottom right of the submission screen.

I will make some UI improvements to make sure this is clear to everybody in a large quality of life improvement patch. I understand that the "join" and "leave" button still hang around even after the challenge has started, and that can be confusing.

I did put several warnings down, but I do understand the confusion.
I will do this once, and only once tomorrow morning (going to bed now), since as of right now, it is a bit easier to clean up. Tomorrow, I will be pushing out a few more quality of life changes that will hopefully make this a lot more clear for people.

The one exception to this fix is that: if you failed to sign up for the challenge, there really isn't much I can do for you.

If someone could compile the users currently in the challenge who failed to attach their pieces to it, that would be nice.

Seems like he and Subcryo both ran into the same problem of submitting too close to 00:00:00 (records indicate a submission at 00:00:30, which means his submission resolved while the rollover 24 hour script was running).

This results in a "soft rollover" instead of an elimination, where your daily streak will not count the next day's submission.

This is a bug that I'm trying to find the best method of resolving.

Committed? Do you mean made? No, I'm just a lurker. But yeah this set feels really comfortable to me. Also the colors remind me a bit of this place. I hate to say it but I really am not a fan of any of the textured and complicated badges that've been proposed, they seem like something my younger brother would get excited about seeing on a splash screen on reaching just one more level of one of the app games he plays. The only problem I think you might find is if after using your phone's camera you don't resize the image, then there's a likelyhood it'll could be a very big image file and exceed the 2.5MB upload limit on DAD.

Fucking hell. When i transitioned from traditional to digital, i couldn't draw lineart at all because the tablet surface was so different from the paper. So i started just making a black silhouette and painting over it. I actually got pretty good with that tech. Now when i am actually making the lineart again, rendering on that feels weird somehow and i find it harder to do. But actually making decent sketch + lineart would improve the outcome a lot in my mind. Fuck my brains. Back to studying i guess.

Ah, that's a character from a game, named Adine, from a visual novel that a friend bought as a joke for me, that I ended up enjoying a fair bit. The artist who did the gifs themselves was Kazerad, if I remember correctly.
She's pretty adorable and is pretty much just a big banana wyvern, so she's become my avatar online for a lot of sites as it works well with my alias, the1banana.

Since starting this whole art thing I think my colorblindness has actually improved. According to the test linked I have moderate red-green colorblindness.

Digital painting is really difficult for me because I can't really... "place" the colors that I see, but working with traditional paints I know what my colors are in terms of color wheel placement. I think if I ever do digital again I'm going to have to use a couple color wheel mods to help visualize what colors are, since I can't tell just by looking.

Do any of you feel the act of posting daily, and having people come into the threads and randomly critique you, makes you want to sit in your comfort zone?

I've found that often times, things that are key to learning (such as experimenting) often yield results that are poor, and have been suspecting that /las/ keeps a lot of you from experimenting.

To me the thought of having to post something you make publicly gets you out of the learning zone and into the performance zone.

I never felt that way ever. Learning something as hard as art shouldn't be done alone. And you also have to control how your art is presented and provide the context for onlookers to provide feedback. This is also an ego thing. I rarely think about LAS or DAD in a performance way because Ill gladly fail and make myself look like a fooI because I know how to learn from failure. This of course doesnt apply everywhere. You want to put your best in a portfolio or when you're presenting finished concepts in a meeting with non artists. Those are the few times where it's not such a great idea to experiment. Thats a stage that should have been resolved in the beginning.

Yeah I understand how portfolio work is basic performance at its highest level. What I do find interesting though, is you've got people such as Craig Mullins who specifically attribute to periods of major improvement, as periods where they shut all outside feedback out, and worked in secret, not even showing his work to his wife- for 6+ months at a time. I do believe those people are likely creating work from a more personal place, and do potentially find the critique to be white noise that may serve to either homogenize the artist's work, or create a situation where the artist can be confused instead of reaching their own understanding and way of troubleshooting. Not saying you should reinvent the wheel, but it does feel great improvement often comes from shutting out all the white noise and progressing according to ones own intuition.

The comments going on are neat but I personally think it would help a great deal of people if we eventually (re)implement an in-site comment section where people can request feedback if they're looking for it.

This might be something where I differ from the norm a bunch, because I rarely like the idea of critiquing a singular piece an artist does (unless it is a performance piece, and needs to be top notch for a client or portfolio). Instead I generally find critique to be most valuable when you look at a collection of pieces an artist has put out, and look for recurring problems. At that point actual long-last insights can be made, instead of the daily "spot the mistake in this guys doodles" that tends to occur in here.

As such, DAD, /ic/, or even anything connected to the internet doesn't help create that environment and I don't think it was designed to. And even then it's kind of hard to 'perform' for other artists because there's no comment section, no critique requests, not even a view counter. There's these threads on /ic/, and separate site from DAD. Even with that I can't see DAD as nothing more than a habit tracking app.

I'm glad to have a fresh start with DED and a new name, and avoiding drawing things I was associated with in LAS. I believe the topic is shifting a bit with this comment. Its moreso the type of feedback you get in between the works. I think either direction you can have that type of environment. Just use a pencil to establish a base, in exemple to set perspective correctly.
Maybe you can straighten your line, use the tip of you little finger if you need.
Draw at least twice bigger if you use the same pen. You will see more clearly and it will oblige you to draw proper ellipses/straight strokes.

Oh sorry If I was unclear here, Mullins brought that up as a response to someone asking about getting critiques online, he was saying specifically you "know" when the outside feedback is and isn't helpful. He also brought up the aforementioned point of being unclear on rules people give out, and fear of homogenization of his artwork.

up to a certain point you don't need critique at all, as long as you have functional eyes and are not suffering from dunning-kruger.

even feng zhu mentions this that critiques are just a distraction that don't really give you anything solid, you might get the wrong idea someone's input even if what they suggest is good.

critiques only help when you've gotten pretty decent already
