IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I use to mostly just have the problem of chicken scratching and smearing leaving me with a relatively okay-proportioned figure that I just can't add anything to because it's a mess, now I try and draw a line and look back and see immediately that it's wrong, then I try and look at the reference *while* drawing the line, and I look back and it's completely different from what I remember seeing and what I drew. Maybe it's from forcing myself to faint so often.

Get some rest and come back at it again tomorrow after a good night's sleep and some breakfast. Mental fatigue is a thing, and you'll have bad days sometimes, especially if you're tired/low on energy. If you've put your effort in tonight already, rest your head a little.
With art you gotta be ready to play the long game, anon, those kinds of days don't go away, even experienced artists talk about having days where they feel like they're completely retarded. Just keep at it.

>tfw can only draw things small

How do I bigger? I can draw something small and keep it in proportion, but the second I make it bigger, even twice the size, the proportions go way off and there's never a happy medium, it either ends up too long and too thin or too short and too fat. When I say "small" I'm talking about two or three inches, no matter what it is that I'm doing.
When I was younger, for some very bizarre reason, I found paper impossible to find and had to steal it from school. They only had two kinds of paper, this rough shit and pristine printing paper which is the one I used to take. But the teacher went berserk if anyone touched it so I could only take a couple of sheets at a time, so back at home I would fold it into four pieces to make it last and because of that I got used to drawing things much smaller than they should be. Is this some kind of hangover/bad habit from that, or is it something else like a lack of confidence in what I'm doing?
Strangely the opposite is true when I paint and I can only do things big.

So I'm reading Keys to Drawing and doing the exercises and all etc.
But I've come across the free and control hands part.
The book tells me, using free hand, to sketch out a vase of flowers and then go to work with the control hand but my question is, why should I make a quick sketch that looks nothing like the thing I want to achieve (see pic related)?
Shouldn't I just draw "normally"? What I mean by this is slow and looking at proportions and all that instead of shiting out a quick sketch that looks nothing like the finished thing?
Especially considering I have all the time in the world, it's not like the vase is going anywhere.

Good work because he's taking the first step and it's in the right direction.

As for why it sucks, the proportions look off, and there's still some symbol drawing, especially in the eyes. Luckily, this book is for curing symbol drawing. The shading is pretty messy and terrible, so I honestly wouldn't worry about it for the time being and just focusing on your proportions. If you really want to shade, make it 3 tones: darks, mids and lights rather than trying to perfect a bunch of blotchy gradients.

Basically just keep drawing things and going through the exercises. You really want to focus on where things are relative to other things and their relative sizes. This means a ton of measuring, checking angles, re-measuring etc, but I think he goes through that all in chapter 3. Chapter 2 on handwriting is skippable and kind of out of place in context with the rest of the book.

This is the starting point that you look back and compare future improvements to. It's all about getting over the fact that you'll spend hours on stuff that sucks so you can make stuff that sucks less in the future.

Depends on what you want. Rotating the page is fine and recommended by artists like Scott Robertson. However, other artists recommend practicing all angles as it is more versatile. (If you were drawing on a building, you wouldn't be able to "rotate the page". )

Basically it's up to you. Rotating the page is easier and quicker to master, drawing at all angles takes significantly longer but is more versatile.

Hands, feet, and face are scummy. Sources on how to approach these parts on a figure. I can do better when it's focused on those specific parts. Who needs sleep when there are so many goddamn feet to draw. Not going to lie, this was by far the hardest plate so far with the lighting, the subtle mid tones, and the awkward view of the foot itself. Try not to avoid drawing hands. If you have a phone, download an anatomy app with skeletons and muscles. Look at the reference of a part of the skeleton, draw it without looking the best you can, and after you're done, look at the anatomy reference and fix what mistakes you made. Keep doing this for different parts of the skeleton, sections at a time, and don't avoid difficult angles. Don't just do anterior and posterior angles. Do this for muscles, then draw again with skin. This has helped me greatly so far. Pic related. I'm not great, but definitely improving fast. (i know this is anterior and posterior, I'm working on more. This was the start)

So I was just day dreaming and thinking about how I might practice proportions. I had the idea of maybe breaking down a reference figure into the major landmarks (head, torso, hips, maybe hands and feet, obviously this is just the first set I thought of of) then simplifying them in my head to more basic shapes (which I suppose may change based on the reference) and practicing drawing just those shapes with the correct size and placement, mostly ignoring the connecting pieces. Could this work or am I retarded.

Start by doing more complex poligonal shapes based on those steuctures you already have, then just soften the transitions beetween the planes. And of course, it goes without saying that now you need to learn some anatomy.

I like the overall shape of the crusader: especially how his cloak falls over his arms.
Don't make all of the colours so blocky: add some dithering, or different shading in sections.
For example, the sky has a change in colour: you can do bands of subtly changing shade and it'll look a bit nicer.
Also, on fiddly things, either go higher resolution, more abstract, or don't include them entirely. For example, I have no idea what the thing in the bottom right is.

How "beginner" are you? If the topics touched by Keys to Drawing or Betty Edwards are completely new to you stick to them, they are sound advice for observational drawing, which is the type of drawing the masses think about when they talk about "drawing".

Do that for a year and the next years try to get into perspective and constructive drawing, then maybe NMA would be a good investment

NMA, even the beginner courses aren't beginner friendly at all, they are more for "beginners" like me or many else, we are afraid to call ourselves intermediate because we suck. Just the lingo used by the professors would make a real beginner dizzy. I'm surprised they haven't put a real beginner course similar to Betty Edward's book

Also, NMA doesn't replace a good teacher, and their mentorship plans suck

NMA got a "beginner course" and it sucks, I wouldn't dare to recommend it to someone that's never drawn in their life.

Stick to keys to drawing, I believe Betty Edwards is more palatable to the complete beginner, but you have a more robust book to learn from so it's not that bad

Once you learn that, get a good, simple book on perspective ( not Robertson's) and then you can jump into Loomis
