It's time lads. Figured it'd be helpful for some people on here to do some more structured and focused studying since it's very easy to get lost/confused with what to draw or study. This is based off the new FZD video so watch that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqWX7onVmU [Embed] to understand what we're gonna be doing. This is the second thread so do some studies of trees and post em itt. The goal should be at least 5-6 pages with 10 sketches on each page (each sketch should take 20-30 minutes) by the end of the week (4/10/18). Obviously do as much as you can and it's fine if you can't meet the goal but just keep it in mind. Post in the thread as you work. Also please try to ask questions, crit, etc, the last thread ended up being people dumping their work with minimal discussion. If people are still drawing then we'll move on to animal bones and skulls next week.

HERE ARE SOME FREE TREE REFERENCES

Damn, didnt know these threads were because of that video. I plan on doing this myself but Gonna have to start with rocks first. Got a couple of Signo DX .38 pens and some smooth copier paper. Questions:

I have standard size printer paper, is it a good idea to fit 10 sketches on each page?

I'm also working on figure drawing, so will this help with that somehow?

It will help with things like observation, rendering of lines and tonal values, spacial relationships etc. All fundamental parts of drawing which transfer regardless of the subject. While it won't be contributing to your understanding of anatomy it will help you get better at drawing in general which is good for drawing other subjects.

Well, thats fine, its mostly to get people to keep drawing everyday. It starts with rocks and trees because you can still make it look good and you dont have to worry about it being accurate. Things like symmetry, anatomy or perspective aren't really applicable when drawing rocks or trees. Thats why we are starting with those things, because its relativeoy easier compared to figure drawing.

I don't think drawing these sorts of thick and very smooth trunks are the best way to build your visual library towards trees. Break them down as best as you can and categorize the things that makes one tree different from another. I see you payed some attention to different bark textures but some texture swatches would go a long way here, as well as things like their branch hierarchy, the kinds of leaves they have, are parts of the roots visible above or below ground, and not to forget the tree's overall silhouette which is very important (just think about how iconic palm trees and pine tree's silhouettes are) etc. I find visual library is well built through that sort of very analytical and deconstructive kind of visual note taking.

As for overall presentation, try to avoid smoothness a bit more, and don't outline the entire thing. Graphically I think it'd be much more pleasing just to bold and white-line one side of the subject. And don't forget to gradate texture to give a greater sense of depth, realism and focus. Try not to make the overall outline too thick either because that will also simplify it and in turn make the tree look less textured, and thus a bit untreelike.

Overall I think your work is very good I just think it's a bit cartoonish which doesn't always do subjects that are as complex and textured as trees justice, and could be an even larger problem with things whose textures are more subtle (like bone)
